Under bed gunsafe

It has been a few years since I bought a fingerprint opening small safe. I returned all of them as not dependable. As I remember half the time it did not recognize my fingerprint and sometimes it would open with my wife's.
I wonder if the technology got any better?

My Barska works very well. Your hands have to be clean. It doesn’t like oil or hand lotion. Also I had to learn exactly how to hold my finger on the pad to match how it was programmed. Once I figured that out, no problems. And it comes with a key in case the batteries fail or the programming gets screwed up. On mine to use the key a plate has to be removed from the front panel with a screwdriver. But it is a last resort, so that seems okay.

Me too, that's why a handgun sits on the nightstand and an AR leans against the wall by the bed.

Try Ft Knox. Though I do not have this box, I do have an original pistol box. Simplex locks are good enough against an honest man, but not against serious effort. They are easy to use, and set. Ft Knox is a decent company.

Though not under bed, consider V Line. Not much more than a school locker, it gets significant strength by being between studs (and typically out of sight). Same rules on the Simplex lock

I don't know why someone would want their shotgun under the bed in a locked box during the night if thats when you think you'ld need it. Too much fumbling. You want to be on your hands and knees trying to open it and pull it out if something happens? Find some place to lock it when your out and take it out and put in the closest corner to you for over night. I can reach mine while laying in bed. You also might want to practice with UNLOADED gun reaching for it in the dark so it's automatic you can put your hands on it. jmo Also I don't know what you wear to bed but a pair of handy sweats may be on your list. Only time I ever had to get up from sleep and grab my shotgun was when some tweaked out guy(probably on Bath Salts) was trying to get in my back door. I don't know if the look on his face was from me only in my Fruit of the Loom briefs or the 12ga pointed at his face through the glass. Luckily he split.

BedVault used to be the only game in town. Decent enough gear, but had to be in a situation where you could bolt it to the floor (so, no-go for apartment dwellers).
Not the best access where speed or alacrity are involved, but a very low visual impact and very much "out of sight, out of mind."

Not a chance, my secondary defense is nudity. A bit cruel perhaps but that's how it is at my house.

Ahh going for the confusion factor. So the perp is left to figure out " Is that his rifle or is that his gun".

Probably good if you have kids..........other wise, A home defense weapon is in duty 24/7. Ready for action at a moments notice.
Like I said, a lock box is good if you have kids. Or you just feel you need one.
Availability with out hesitation( lock box) is paramount. Just my perspective.

The Fort Knox uses a good simplex lock and is a proven design, but as far as I know they only have the long boxes that open on the small end. One vendor demonstrating it in a video mentioned they planned to have a side-door model by next year, but that video was in 2016.

SecureIT makes a side-opening box. The most likely weak link in all their designs is the electronic lock, which they appear to have changed in the last year or so. SecureIT's general proposition in favor of lightweight security boxes and decentralization is appealing, but when I look at prices plus shipping, they're barely less than traditional steel and gypsum RSC's that have higher capacity.

The only reason I would ever keep a gun I intended to use for HD in a safe would be to prevent children in the house (assuming I had some) from accessing the firearm. In that case, I would remove it from the safe when I went to sleep and put it back in the AM. Home invasions are usually executed using the military principles of a raid- speed, surprise, and violence of action. IMO, going from a dead sleep and transitioning to the combat mode is challenging enough when your gun is accessible. Doing fine motor skills required to open any safe and put the firearm into action would be even more difficult. Also keep in mind other things you may want to be doing in your action plan- and add opening the safe. Try this drill- have your S-O wake you up one night from a dead sleep and perform a similar function like unlocking your Iphone, which you have placed under the bed. Keep an empty shotgun next to it, and put it into action (minus live ammo). However long it takes is wasted time that you won't have time to waste when its for real.

IMHO a layered defense buys time....strong deadbolt locks, alarm system, dogs that bark etc.

I use a V-Line vault for my AR that I simply slide under the bed:



Simplex mechanical lock, plenty of room for spare mags and even a handgun. I've got 3 of the V-Lines, a couple that I've had for close to 20 years and I've never had a problem with them. Very easy to remove the gun at night, and lock it back up in he morning IF that's what you want.

Another reason to keep it locked up while not at home is running the risk of coming home and interrupting something. I'd hate to think I could end up facing someone with my M4gry that prior to breaking in was unarmed...

I agree.
Add an extra car and don’t have set hours and you make for a very unattractive unattractive target.

We have more cars than drivers and the furry child in my profile pic is very vocal when anyone comes up the road. Come on the property and he sounds outright vicious. Actually he is to those who come in uninvited, but that’s a different thread.
