Please share your experience with the P938. I had to send my summer carry gun in for repairs and I find I don't have a backup that conceals anywhere near as well as my XDs. I know the best answer is to get another XDs, but I like variety. I've been shooting a 1911 for many years so the manual safety doesn't worry me, nor does cocked and locked carry.

Please share your good, bad, and ugly experience with this model.

By the way, I've handled a Sig P365 and am not convinced, nor do I want to be a beta tester. Please refrain from telling me I should consider it. I already am.

Thanks

I like mine. Carry it on occasion or my LC9s. I find it is much more accurate and light in recoil than I thought it would be.

Has fed everything I've put thru it thus far, less than 400 rounds. This includes S&B hollow points. Glad I bought it.

I have a P938sas that I carry daily. It’s a fine pistol and has been trouble free for me. If you buy used, be sure to check for an updated sear spring/magwell and mag release/spring. Earlier versions were updated to fix issues with both items but the bugs should be worked out by now with new stock.

Mine is soft shooting for its size and I find it easy to shoot it accurately. It disappears in a front pocket with a proper holster.

The siglight sights on mine are very good as well.

One word of caution. Do not overtighten the grip screws. It is possible to strip them out of the aluminum frame.

Disclaimer: this is my second p938sas. Sig replaced my first one after problems with light strikes and the grip screws. I did have good customer service from Sig.

Buy with confidence! It’s a great pistol.

I had one for a couple of years and recently sold it, replacing it with the Shield 2.0 9mm. The P938 was reliable and as drband mentioned shot well for a gun it's size. It just wasn't a good fit for me, as I couldn't shoot it as accurately as the Shield. Sometimes good guns can be the wrong fit for a person, which was the case with me. If you shoot it well, I'd recommend it.

My wife loves hers, it is her EDC. Has been reliable to a fault. Another alternative would be one of the Kimber Micro 9 variants, very similar size/function wise. I bought a Micro 9 Eclipse to carry when I want something a little smaller than my normal carry Kimber Ultra Crimson Carry. Good and reliable shooter so far.

@Doublehelix

Doublehelix, you carry a P938 don't you? Any words of wisdom?

I found the version with the Hogue rubber grip the most pleasant in the hand, but the "Extreme" felt pretty good too with the aluminum grips.

I love mine, It’s been dead reliable and very soft shooting. It’s also easier to shoot accurately than a subcompact/microcompact should be. I daily carried mine until I switched to appendix carry; I’m just not comfortable with anything but a double action revolver in that position. Typically I’d sell a carry gun that I’m no longer carrying, but I can’t bring myself to let my P938 go.

My only complaint is that apparently SIG handguns are set up for a combat sight picture where you cover the target with the front sight. For me, that meant it shot slightly low (not that it mattered much at conceal carry distances)

Question for P938 owners who have fired the P238 too:

How is the subjective recoil of the heavier P938 (9x19mm) relative to the lighter P238 (.380ACP / 9x17mm / 9mm Kurz)?

I have done the KE and momentum and recoil vel calcs of both (using lower recoil 9x19mm) and the numbers say the P938 still has more recoil. Just wondering if it can be felt by the user.

I had a P938, and mostly liked it.
It was good looking and well made, and shot pretty well.
It just didn't fit my extra large hands. The safety levers would both hit my knuckles when I shot it.
I do wish I'd have kept it though.

I pocket carry it and it is excellent. I was a little leery at first about carrying in condition 1, but after a few years have gained much confidence and had no issues. Shoots great, feels great in my large hands, and she shoots it pretty well also. Got it for a great price on palmetto state, and haven't looked back. Actually, I my interest has piqued on the lighter P365 with its larger capacity and simple manual of arms, but I will give it at least a year so they can address all the issues.

EDIT: Misread title.

Only shot the 938 once and I liked it. Not too snappy and the hogue grip fit my hand well.

Id like one.

I'm a P238 owner who has fired the P938 too. Does that count?

I actually did own a P938 for a while, but found it too snappy for my liking. The P238 is definitely less so. To me, the best of all possible worlds is the P238 HD, the one with the all-steel frame. It's a hefty little bugger, but it's almost like shooting a .22 -- subjectively very little felt recoil.

Sorry, been out of town and just seeing this thread.

Yeah, I love my P938, and have carried it every day for 3+ years. I see all the hoopla with the P365, and as much as I think it is probably a great gun, I see no reason to switch from the P938. It has been 100% reliable (I had the Main Spring Housing replaced as @drbrand mentions right after I got it due to the reports of issues with the old style MSH).

I amaze people when I shoot my little gun! It is way more accurate than it should be for such a small gun.

I was recently at a range with a 6-plate rack with a couple of buddies. They were knocking down plates OK, several misses, several hits, etc.

I walked up to the line (11 yards), and BAM! 6 shots, 6 plates, 3.5 seconds. After they got their jaws back up off the ground, all they wanted to talk about was my small P938. Both of them shot it and fell in love with it as well.

I do love my rubber Hogue grips, but I have never tried the Extreme grips. I have no reason to switch, so I have not tried anything else. I carry it in a Stealthgear Onyx OWB holster at about 4:30 or 5:00 or so, and it just disappears. I keep her loaded with 147 gr. Federal HST +P rounds, and test them every month or two, and have had zero failures with that load.

I trust my life and the life of my loved ones with this gun, and that is the best recommendation I can give anything.

It is an SAO gun, and it takes down in a similar way to a 1911, although not exactly. All of my pistols are SAO except for one (HK VP9), so I am used to that setup, and the thumb safety gets clicked automatically as a part of my draw.

Any specific questions? I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is really a GREAT gun that I can't foresee replacing anytime soon.

Any specific questions?

My intention would be to carry this gun IWB. I have carried 1911s OWB before with a retention strap wedged between the cocked hammer and slide, but never in an open top design or IWB. The safety I tried on the P938's I handled felt pretty positively engaged. Have you ever had a situation where the safety came off inadvertently?

I use a heavy Bigfoot Gun Belt, and believe in buying quality holsters. I'm a fan of Stealthgear also. I believe the positive retention combined with a good belt should negate any movement of the gun in a holster so I don't think the safety could be accidentally disengaged, however the exposed ambi safety gives me pause. The trigger would still be totally covered by the holster, so the gun shouldn't discharge by accident, but it still gives me pause. Would you be comfortable carrying your IWB or does anything about the design concern you? Also, do you know if a one sided safety is available?

In winter I carry a P30SK OWB. My hot weather carry gun just recently broke down and I'm looking to have a new primary or a backup summer carry. So a P938 would be carried in hot sweaty months. Is your finish holding up with that much carry time? Is it humid where you live? Honest wear is fine but I get pissy when a finish or coating seems too delicate.

I am used to carrying and shooting an XDs 45. Recoil is sharp on that gun, but manageable. The P938 is lighter in weight though, but shoots a smaller round. If you've shot an XDs 45, how does the recoil compare? The XDs is 23 oz I believe and the Sig is 16.

Do you use oil on the rails or gun grease?

Sorry, lots of questions now that I think about it.

I’ve shot an xds45 (been a while) but the P938 is way more controllable and quicker back on target.

I use grease on the rails, sometimes with a drop of oil. Very smooth. Just cycle it several times and wipe off the residue.

That's good info and thanks. I actually shoot the XDs45 pretty quickly, so I'm guessing I'd be able to shoot the P938 pretty quickly also if it is more controllable. I've had total confidence in my XDs, and the breakdown has me now questioning that. Everything breaks eventually, but considering it's relatively low round count, it just shouldn't have happened.

SA has had it for a week and a half and all I know is that it showed up.

I sold off an XDs-45 as I thought the recoil, though manageable for me, was simply not what I wanted in a compact pistol. The P-938 is lightyears ahead of the XDs in "controllability" ... Not to mention, it's more accurate with a much superior trigger.

I've been carrying my P-938 in either a Galco Stow'n'Go IWB but mostly OWB in a horsehide Kramer Belt Scabbard, which renders the pistol flat against the body and conceals exceptionally. Really, I haven't found a reason to not carry OWB with this pistol as it's such a small package that can be worn for 16 hours or more and I don't even feel or notice it ...

Sig P938 Nightmare (G10 Grips).

938-9-NMR-AMBI-large.jpg

When the GLOCK G36 (6+1 .45 ACP) is too big, which ain't very often, the P938 goes.

147 gr. Ranger-T series or HST std, carry load, Truncated ball for the range.

Trigger breaks like a 4 lb. icicle, and it is extremely precise and easy to shoot well, like 3-4" at 25 yards.

It has run trouble-free for several years of range work.

Just grease it like a 1911.

Carry it in a GALCO Stow-N-Go suede IWB holster at ~ 3:30 (the clip has an index slot for a belt loop), same as the G36.

The holster needed a little mod., by way of a ~1" piece of plastic McD's knife handle, to support the frame between the leather and the clip.

Little wonder.

Can't say enough about this pistol.

Thumb Safety - is the only drill.

My daily carry is my P938. It replaced my Kel-Tek PF9. The P938 is only 2.5oz heavier than the PF9 fully loaded. I enjoy shooting the Sig and it’s accurate.

The recoil of the P938 isn’t bad at all. I compared it to shooting my Star Firestar M43 9mm and the P938 didn’t have anymore recoil (to me anyway). The M43 is all steel and is 1/2” taller and 3/4” longer than the P938.

Yes, actually. I am not 100% sure what happened, but about a year ago, I took the P938 out of the IWB holster to put it in the Sticky holster I use to store it by my bedside at night, and I noticed that the safety was disengaged. I am not sure if I did that, or if I bumped into something that hit the safety or something. I will admit it did freak me out a bit at the time, but as you mention, the trigger is protected by the holster, and overall, I feel that it is a safe gun to carry everyday.

I am not aware of a one-sided safety that is available for this gun.

The finish has not marred one bit, although I did put an idiot scratch in the side of the slide with a knife one time, but a gun bluing pen took care of that lickity split. The finish is just perfect honestly, and I live in the Midwest where the summer months are hot and humid. The gun comes out sweaty quite often.

No experience with the XDs. Sorry.

Do you use oil on the rails or gun grease?

I have been using oil (Weapon Shield) exclusively on the P938, although I have started using Weapon Shield grease on my SIG P226, and I am loving how the gun is cycling. I might consider trying grease on the P938 as well, although I think oil is more temperature-neutral and is probably a better choice for a carry gun. I keep it fairly clean, and I know that often when I am cleaning my other guns, I might add a light touch of additional oil to the slide rails between cleanings.

Thank you all for the good information. I received notice that My XDs will be coming back to me on Monday, so I will not be without a small carry gun for very long, but I still want a backup.

I originally thought that I should just pick up a 9mm XDs, but my breakdown has given me pause, and besides holster compatibility, I see no reason not to have variety. I'm going to do some shopping and see what shows up. I also need to test my XDs extensively again to see if the problem will reoccur. If it does, that gun will go away. However my issue does not appear to be a wide spread problem. It has a new trigger installed from SA, so we'll see.

Really, I haven't found a reason to not carry OWB with this pistol as it's such a small package that can be worn for 16 hours or more and I don't even feel or notice it ...
That's something I've been considering also. I definitely prefer OWB, and in winter months that's how I carry, and a larger gun to boot. However, it is dryish where I live, but gets north of 90 degrees regularly. I typically wear light, and relatively form fitting clothes. I tried on my P30SK the other day and I looked ridiculous. It was so obvious I had a gun on me I just couldn't do it. So IWB will be my primary mode of carry if I do pick one of these up.

Are you able to carry it in the pocket fairly easily? Just curious.

Go to alabamaholster.com and look at their Front Pocket Holster. Kydex. I use one with my p938 every day. Highly recommended!
