Had to run up to the local shop today to drop off invoices for gunsmithing work, put one of my critters out on his shelf and go over a few other things. Business has been slow for him, and I told him to just square up with me when he could, as I'm sitting OK at the moment. But he doesn't like owing, so he was going to cut a check .

I glanced over at the case and noticed a new arrival, a really clean Mk VII Desert Eagle .44. Now, I had a Mk XIX .50 in brushed chrome that I had to sell a decade ago to pay my mortgage, and though they're pretty impractical for most purposes, I did hunt with mine and had a general fondness for it.

I probably shouldn't have, but for $980 toward his bill, this is what followed me home:

44 is a very nice version of the gun. Plenty power, but easy to find the ammo. It’s nice that’s its one of the tasteful finishes too. Nothing gawdy, nothing hard to source, nothing wrong with the price either.

That's a very fun gun, I bought mine new in the 80's with the walnut grips and Millet sights. I took the walnut off and installed the plastic grips, as big as my hands are it felt way too fat with the walnut. You got an outstanding price, around here I've seen them going for nearly twice that. BTW who makes the holster, something I lack. That one in a righty would be perfect.

Very nice, I've been harboring an irrational desire for a Desert Eagle lately, but only in .44 mag similar your yours. The matte black finish on y'all's looks nice, part of me really wants one in one of the obnoxious patterns like polished chrome or gold tiger stripe.... Shameful, I know.

Given your machining skills, I assume you will find some way to thread it for one of your can designs, right?

44 mag through a .45 can sounds interesting. .429 through a .451 will bleed off pressure but the quite large pressure spike might be too much for a can. As much as I want to see it done, I can’t fathom that being a realistic possibility.

Well, there's not much I can do with the 6" barrel, given the location of the gas port. But if I find a good price on a ten incher, it'll be one of the only suppressed Desert Eagles around!

Most .45 cal pistol cans just aren't designed for .44 mag pressures. It's not so much a matter of can strength, but baffle spacing and design. Even 10mm doesn't suppress very well with standard pistol cans.

Friend of mine had one (bright chrome but he always had a fondness for "shiny" guns), that was literally a total "blast" to shoot! The only drawback was that it needed jacketed ammo because of the gas system. Other than that it still is the tamest .44 Magnum I have ever shot.

Nice find! That is a great price, too!

I recently acquired a Mk 1 that did not look like it had ever been fired, the mags still had grease or cosmoline on them. The date codes on the mags were '86, so I am fairly certain it was made in '86. The finish looks identical to yours, stainless frame. It is an absolute joy to shoot, very accurate when you get used to the recoil.

That's a good deal. You should be able to sell it for more than that if you need to without a problem. I've been on the look out for a .44 under a grand and in good condition for years without much success.

Nice pistol and a great deal.:) The DE platform has never been my cup of tea so to speak. Just cant warm up to it for some reason. This coming from a 44 AMP owner though.;)

I had the opportunity in my midteens to shoot one of the original TDE Automags in the formally known as Great Britain a number of times. All I can say it that it was fun with a capital F. It was very accurate. One day if I have 1k pocket change lying around with nothing else to spend it on I might look at a Desert Eagle.

Nice, mine is a pretty sweet shooter!
