Best Combat Pump?

I love my 870. Shoot it all the time and I've never had any issues. Get you an extended mag and a forend light and you should be good to go. Tons of parts available for the 870 so it makes an already versatile gun that much better.

I like my old 20 gauge but I see 870's getting stuck at matches all the time.
You ever experience the slide getting stuck?

Seems like that is too darned common on recent built 870's.

I grew up with the Remington M870 and a Wingmaster was actually the first 4473 I filled out, half a lifetime ago when I turned 18. They are a fine shotgun. But I've played around with a 590A1 now some too, and I have to say, nothing says "prepare to repel boarders" quite like a 590 with a bayonet mounted. If I was to pick one shotgun to clear the trenches, it would be the Mossberg. I feel like it has a slight edge in reliability and durability.

Combat pump? No.
My sawn off Ithaca is ok for home defense but if I were looking for trouble, the Beretta 1200 auto would be my choice. If I didn't have a rifle handy.
I declined to buy one because it would not shoot my trap reloads. Any factory was fine.

I like the 870 for warm weather states, because of the safety. For cold weather the top mounted safety of the Mossberg is easier to work with heavy gloves. I have both both, like them both.

I bought mine used but it's a fairly late model. Never had any issues like that but my uncle took it to an armory training where he smoothed up the action pretty good, so clearances may not be so tight as a brand new one. Who knows? Maybe a hangup is in my future but in about 1000 loads of target load she's worked like a dream!

I chose the Maverick 88. YouTube reviewers said its the 500 with a different safety location and because the safety location is where it is on the Model 12 Winchester that I've hunted with all of my life.... that location is a natural for me. Price $180 at Academy on sale. I'll probably never use it in "combat" but its there leaning in the corner if the situation every arrises.

Its at the top of my shotgun group photo, the other two are Model 12s

CZ 612 HC-P
Maybe not the best, but got to like the name.
The HC stands for Hord Control

Winchester 1300 Defender with a 7 shot tube and a 20 inch heavy barrel it soaks up alot of the recoil but you play he** finding a longer barrel and it is cyl choke only no screw in tubes

Though Im a huge fan of the model 12, a 7 shot, 20" barrel 1300 is what resides by my bedside, gathering dust.
Ive practiced house clearing with it, and Im confident with it. as is the wife, which is pretty important

That middle one a 16?

Not sure about being a requirement for combat, but my Rossi 59 slamfire pump in .22 mag sure is fun. Also like my Ithaca 37 (post-slam-fire era) set up in home defense config - have no idea what's "best".

Being a shotgun would be a good start, so maybe not the .22 Mag, but I'll agree with you on the 37; I have one for an HD gun.

The one that fits the shooter best out of any available.

Reading arguments up to here leads me to believe any reliable pump would do the trick. In fact, I think even mine (Winchester SXP Defender, never malfunctioned, but no comparable use to armed conflict business, thankfully) would do If needed.

Are sights a good thing or a nuisance on a combat shotgun? For the intended use, I would believe anything slowing the process between seeing the enemy and pressing the trigger is questionable, but oddly, if forced to go to war, I feel like I would appreciate sights. Are slugs (or exotic specialty ammo like Frag 12) also used, or is it strictly 00 buckshot in combat?

As a police firearms instructor, and generally experienced old dude, I believe the 870 ain't like she used to be, and the Mossberg 500 is easier to train for, and use under stress. (Combat)

I don't think either the 870 or 500 is what they used to be. I've seen a lot of plastic and crude fitting parts lately.
An old WIng Master OTOH sounds like closing a bank vault, and smooth. Mossbergs were trustworthy too.

I agree, and I own one of the older 870 Express Super Mags I found at a decent price and converted into a HD Shotgun.
I figure first shot of 18 00 buck pellets(3-1/2") followed by 6 2-3/4" 00 shells, if ever needed, will do.
