I think y'all are taking this way too seriously. If an intruder happened to see the laser and was scared off that would be a happy accident, and that seems like what the OP was going for. Could be wrong, but just a thought.

Re-read what you just wrote. If it DOESN'T work, what will the outcome be?You may be correct if he's high. But that little laser spot is extremely bright.
I didn't mean to imply that it would work every time, or in all circumstances, but IMHO, it's a worthwhile alternative to try.
And if it fails, you won't have time to wonder what went wrong.Sounds good in theory, but with the short time as these things go down...you're more than likely won't have much time to test it.
Have you considered how much time will elapse between trying your first option and reaching your last?To each his own, I guess.
For me, pressing the trigger is the last option, not the first.

Not something to bet your life on. It doesn't hurt to have it, I have one built into my S&W Bodyguard 38, and I have two rail-mount ones for my other pistols. But I'll side with most of the rest here; lighting up your target is a better idea. I have 4 flashlights on my night stand. I also owe my life to the fact my dad used a flashlight to identify me when I came in the house at 2 am, rocking out to Metallica on my Walkman. (that ages me!) I didn't hear him call my name, so I saw the barrel of the Python and a Mag-light in my face when he turned it on. I never wore the Walkman into the house again!
That would be true ONLY if you had already decided to shoot as soon as you were on target.Probably the same outcome that would be if no laser were present.

Just time for your enemy to get off a shot, right?About 1/5 of a second.
Let me get this straight -- HE does not already have a gun pointed at you?Nope. If he can aim and get off a shot before I can press the trigger, I never had a chance anyway.

So at the first incoming shot, you're done? It's all over? In the North Hollywood shootout, the perps fired over 1100 rounds and they were the only ones that died. Even if they hit you, numerous people have survived more than 10 hits from handguns.
But bear in mind that the bad guy knows exactly what that little red dot on his chest means. There is a strong probability that he will knock down the outside door and leave a block long trail of fecal material in his wake.
