I got skunked this firearms season (so far).

Nothing...

...on any side.

2 weeks in at our other farm, nothing...

...but a lone hay bale. 20181115_143441.jpg

One week left then I have to trade my BAR for my Hawken. Which will be my first time hunting with a muzzleloader- a flintlock no less! Should be fun. So I still have time to bag a whitetail.

My wife and I hunted a property, this morning, where I shot my first buck ever (an 11 point). While we were pulling up at 0645 this morning we spotted 6 or so deer in the fields surrounding the property. We pull in, gear up, spray down and start walking north. She stops and says there us a buck directly ahead. I see him and a doe. He was very wide but I have no idea how many points he had. I asked for the rifle (we were sharing my AR since she has a doe tag and I have a buck tag.) And as soon as she hands it to me they trot off into the woods. Well crap. We walk and see another group of 4-6 doe and they're coming right for us. I had the rifle this time so I had to hand it to her. She takes aim for a neck shot (they were about 75 yards out) and pulls the trigger. *CLICK*....Iet the bolt down easy so the firing pin and primer didn't make contact :(
No worries, we carry on, walk the property, sit, call, rattle, sit, wait, call, wait. We decide to get up and walk the property (about 0830) and we come to an area near a pumpjack where we were looking at tracks and trails and I look up to see a deer moving about 40 yards ahead. I saw him because he was lowering his head and I saw his antlers moving behind the brush. I ask for the rifle and she quickly hands it to me while he was behind the brush. He steps out quartering toward me. I hold my aim, and he begins walking turning more broadside. I waited until he took a step with his front left leg and pulled the trigger. Beautiful shot right behind the quarter. Huge blood trail. He went 20-30 yards and expired on a power line easement. I imagine it was a heart shot simply because of the placement of the shot and the amount of blood. The ol' 22 proving my point again :) deer hunter XP all day long.
My second buck to ever harvest, my second 11 point, second buck to shoot off this property, and my second deer of the year. I'm a happy hunter even though I let the big one pass. I'll take my bow out when we go again today. :)

After 8 days of bow hunting for a 190-200 inch monster, I've had enough. He's got more endurance and hair on his body than I do. 15 degree temps, snow and wind took its toll.

Settled for this 10 pointer instead, maybe I'll get another chance at the big one during gun season.

We have trailcam pics of a true monster buck. He is a regular on our property. I was watching him when this 8pt entered the area. He kept coming until he was 20yds and closing.
Bird in the hand? Yep,
Not the buck i was hunting....but he was point blank...and a nice 8pt.
Not too bad for opening morning.
Glad you were able to get out there!

Very nice, lots of character
You can see on his brow tines that he's bee. rubbing a lot. After I pulled his head out of the truck I happened to notice some bark stuck in the little groves of his antlers. After we made it back to the property and walked the same area I found a small bois d'ark that had been damn near rubbed from tip to root. They're sure acting all kinds if weird right now. Lol

Congrats on that buck! I might be a little jealous if that's a buck you have to "Settle" on. Lol. That's a buck of a lifetime for me, but I've only been deer hunting for 39 years.

We are truly blessed to have an abundance of quality deer. This is my 54th year of hunting, so my goals and expectations have risen. Like going through the buffet line time after time, you eventually know what the best items are and the ones to pass on. After observing an outstanding buck, everything else is measured by that standard. Good luck to you and hope you get that buck of a lifetime.

From this weekend! My waterfowl Benelli Nova does perfect double duty as a slug gun. I used Fiocchi Aero Slugs (Brenneke-type) and IC choke. Also scored a Canada Goose as a bonus.

Doe was quartering and slug went through just inside the front leg and penetrated through the vitals, abdomen, and out. Hard hitting slugs.
