Thanks guys, I guess I deserve an A for effort, but I'm not terribly efficient. I won't say how many times I hunted trying to get him. LoonWulf, I was all over Molokai years ago twice and never saw one of those Axis deer. Have they tried to eliminate them lately? Its remarkable you got two nearly the same size! Is that a 375 Ruger? Thanks!

Hey Doc, heck of a buck you got for your self there too.

There hasn't been any culling of the axis that I know of. I think the population might actually be higher right now than I've seen in a while.

Both bucks are full grown, and about as large bodies as the average axis buck gets.
The larger bodied deer is probably a few years older. Since they were taken from the same area, I can only assume they had similar feed etc so grew at a similar rate?

When we're you here? Unless you were actively looking for them or we're out alot at dawn and dusk they are pretty easy to miss.
They have been taught that being next to the road or in the open during the day is a good way to end up as dinner.
 
96 and 2004 or 5 I believe...I wasn't really hunting
Just taking in the sites. Definitely not off the beaten track. Saw some on my cousins in Texas with my gun 100 yards away in the truck and always regretted not being ready. Some day ...

That is nice. I have taken around 300 deer and have never taken a 10 point or one over 140. Congratulations.

Opening day of gun season in Ohio. I got on stand about 15 min before legal light, and shot this doe about an hour later. Wasn't a fun sit, with the wind blowing 30 miles an hour and driving rain off and on. I was in a ladder stand about 16 ft high and was starting to wonder if I shouldn't bail out for the day. Saw 2 other does, and a family of raccoon that climbed out of a hollow tree and headed into the woods.
Took her with a ruger ranch rifle in .450 bushmaster and hornady custom ammo. Not very happy with the ammo today, the first bullet turned to shrapnel on impact and didn't slow her down much although I'm sure it would have killed her.
The corn field is about 1/3 under water with the recent weather we've had so rather than try and drive something out to it, I had to drag it about 300 yards in the mud. I didn't even think to bring a rope, so I just grabbed a leg and started wading. I'm really glad it wasn't a mile uphill :D doe001-DSCF1026.JPG

On Wednesday, November 14, 2018 I was sitting on my daypack on a south facing hillside. Bored and a little bit cold (just my toes) I decided to pull out my cellphone to see if I could get service. To my surprise, 1 bar, so decided to check my emails .I was reading a Christian article from "Crosswalk", when the strangest noise scared me. Approximately 50 feet below me was a buck. Well, when I looked up he took off to my right. I was two ridges south of where my hunting partner and I had taken our only MN. moose in 2002., a recent clear/cut back then. Well granted, things grow back, what I call "Balsam Weed and Aspen.
The Buck made a noise I never heard B4. A loud grunt that had the rhythm of a deer blowing, but he was loud! Iv'e Heard bucks come in behind does sounding like a pig, but this was different. My thought at the time was the only way I will get a shot is if he stops on the facing ridge.
Instinctively, I pulled up my left knee, rested my left elbow on it in anticipation of a forth-coming shot opportunity while the rifle
butt found it's place on my shoulder.
He STOPPED! ON THE OPEN RIDGE!!!
Peep, Peep, post, POW! goes my Remington model 1917 in 30.06 as I looked through all the tall new growth,thinking I had a clear shot.
He bolts up the remainder of the ridge, with tail high, & full blown run.........
Heart sinks, thinking I shot low or hit an unseen branch. Checked the time, 9:19. Well, gonna await at least 20 minutes. 20 turned to 30 B4 I got my butt moving. 45 minutes later, at the scene of the shootin'
WOW, some hair and looky there, blood sprayed out of a squirt bottle, misty like.. Hung some flagging just in case of a weather change , then started tracking.
Got to the top of the ridge & boy , look at all the tracks! I took the wrong path at first, quickly realizing no blood spray, backtracked to another set of tracks, ya, blood spray. About 50 yards later, THANK YOU LORD!!! there is my deer!


I am now very frustrated as I can not upload pix! Will try tomorrow with a clear head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Armored farmer, I do not want to derail this thread,but I started reading 12/14/02016, one day after I retired. (can not figure out how to PM yet.)
The deer hunting story is not complete yet, stay tuned, and God bless us all!

More of a great hunting story yet to come! ( I ain't heard her singing yet!):)

Here he is once I got him off the stump. To my surprise, he kinda had 3 antlers. Check it out above his left eye.
I therefore call it a 1X3X4:)o_O
I gutted him, then moved the deer away a bit from the gut pile to finish splitting the pelvic bone to remove the bladder and anus. Upon doing that I noticed something in the deer's cavity, so I reached in and pulled out a severed heart that had the top part blown off! COOL! The heart obviously did not come out with the rest of his insides but this showed me my shot and just how far a dead deer can travel!

What county? Nice looking doe! This is the first ohio gun season ive missed in over 10yrs. I hope to go Sunday. That sucks about the 450BM ammo doing that. I got away from anything Hornady ballistic tip for hunting. I had a 12ga SST blow up on a shoulder and a 250gr sst bullet not even exit on a buck 45yards away. Its either hollow point or flat point from now on. I did blast a doe quartering too me with a 45-70 gummy tip and it went right on through the whole body and made a huge mess. My buddy is using the 450BM this week here in Ohio. I warned him stay off the shoulder from your post.

Franklin county, hunting over a cornfield of some friends I help out farming part time. The first deer I shot with the hornady ammo was impressive, went through diagonal and broke multiple ribs on both sides and left a huge exit wound. This one did a ton of damage but not to anything that would stop her. I will make another thread about that, rather than derail this thread.
