G19 replacement?

I like the idea of the P320 and its modularity, but then I looked at what it would really cost to have it in both full-sized and compact forms . . . I could just buy a second pistol, or very close to it.

I also really enjoy the.45acp. I just can't afford nearly as much ammo!

It is rather odd when the price of some models are below $400 and the conversion kits are running $350

I have a Compact and was thinking of adding a X-Carry frame for $50. The difference in feel is pretty significant and well worth the cost...plus I know the guys who designed it. I even considered cutting the Carry frame down to Compact size so I wouldn't need new mags

Springfield EMP maybe?
I believe Walkalong liked his before his son got it.
(oooppssss left out his son)

I think the real question is whether he liked it after he got it! ;)

I went out to the LGS yesterday and fondled handled a few pistols. In particular, the VP9SK has really caught my eye. Unfortunately, the paddle mag release is a bit too far for this stubby thing that I call a thumb to reach without twisting the gun in my hand. That wouldn't bother me for a range gun, but it does for a possible carry gun. Then, with a little searching around the interwebs, I discovered that there's an HK VP9-B. That one comes with a button release! So the plan for the time being is: (1) Hang onto Glock; (2) save $$; and (3) wait and see if HK makes a VP9SK-B.

Lots of folks use their trigger finger to release the mag with a paddle release.

For perspective on "stubby thumbs", Shannon Smith (who probably doesn't have stubby thumbs, but is like nearly everybody else) on mag changes...

"There basically isn't a handgun on the planet that I can reach the mag release without shifting the gun in my hand."

I realize they are out there, but I'm surprised there are folks that can reach a mag release without shifting the gun in their hand. I like to look at the issue as the gun manufacturer was kind enough to put the mag release out of your reach, while you have a full firing grip, to prevent you from accidentally dropping a mag while you're shooting.

It's never even occurred to me to try to hit the paddle with my thumb. I use my index finger.

Yeah, . . . . no. Every other semiauto that I carry uses a button release, and that's what I've practiced with for years. I have no objection to a paddle release for a range gun, but I don't have the time to retrain my brain and hands for one on a carry pistol.
I'd recommend putting proper sights and a G34 trigger in your 19 before giving up on it.
Who said I gave up on it? I just needed to raise a little cash, and addressing the possibility that there might be something out there better for me than a Glock.

I like that!

I get seduced by non-glocks all the time. I'm not sure anything out there is "better." But if I wanted a fling I'd look at the 320 X5 or the PPQ Q5. I have a full size p320, it's nice but the X5 is nicer.

With respect to the others: M&P triggers travel past the break, I've never gotten used to it. FN triggers seem gritty. Same with the CZ p10. I don't trust the internal safeties on the XDs, apparently Springfield doesn't either -- that's why they added a grip safety. HK's are all hype and marketing. I haven't tried the striker fired Beretta. DA/SA is a whole different ballgame.

At the end of the day, once I get a new "platform" and I start thinking about a half dozen mags, sights, holsters etc., I go back to my G19 and G34 with my tail between my legs with the realization I don't want to invest the time and ammo familiarizing myself with a new "plarform." It's good to try lots of guns, but the more time you fiddle around with others, the less time you have to shoot one gun really well.

There are some aspects of the "closed system" of striker-fired pistols that I like, but I like the idea of being able to cock the hammer for a second strike, if necessary, too. IOW, yes, I'm open to the idea of hammer-fired guns.

The CZ P07 is a very accurate weapon. I've got one and a Sphinx SDP (also a very accurate weapon) -- and it's hard to say which is more accurate. (The SDP is a much more refined weapon, and fits my hand a bit better, but the P07 is a real bargain -- and with enhancements from CZ Custom or Cajun Gun Works, it'll be hard to beat.)

As was noted earlier, the P07 is about the same size as the Glock 19. With that gun, the owner/user can easily switch from safety (which allows cocked & locked starts) to decocker. You can also start from the half-cock notch, when the safety is installed,, which shortens and lightens the trigger pull a bit, but it's still a true DA pull. Note: the decocker version decocks to the half-cock position and that is the normal starting position for all CZ decocker models.

In a recent discussion on the S&W Forum, Randy Lee, an engineer and designer for APEX, talked about problems with barrel designs (and dwell time -- how quickly the barrel unlocks -- and how that can affect accuracy) . In that discussion, he cited the SIG 320, the CZ P07 (and implicitly, the P09) and the Walther PPQ as being some of the most innately accurate designs out there.

Randy was responsible for the new APEX barrel design for both the M&P 1.0 and 2.0 guns and his design apparently greatly improves the gun's accuracy. (His changes had to do with dwell-time.)

I also have a CZ-P10c, and CZ has announced a sub-compact and full-size version of that gun -- but I don't know if they're available in the real world yet. There is some resistance to the gun because of the very aggressive stipling on the grips -- but that is easily "fixed" with several wipes using sandpaper (taking off the TIPs of the stippling points.) Enhancement for the P10 line are slowly coming on line, too. I changed out the trigger system on mine -- as I was getting some trigger slap (but not everyone has that problem.)

I thought the same before buying my HK45. It comes quicker than you might think.

But since you're going to save some money first, like you said you might as well wait for the VP9SK-B.

Why replace your G19 with another one? Is there a change in the newest model that corrects a deficiency in the one you already own?

I bought a P320 Compact and I'm very happy with it. My oldest son bought Springfield XDm and really likes it a lot, probably helped along because his carry is an XDs.

IMO handle and shoot if possible the Sig P320 Compact, XDm Compact, M&P 2.0 Compact and maybe the Walther Creed and you might find something you'll not want to put down.

That is the current plan.

Just because I needed some quick cash. No more, no less.

I have a G19 gen 4, a G17 gen 3, and a G17 gen 5, and a few more. All 3 are great however, my favorite is the G17 gen 5 which I shoot the best. You mentioned that the addition will be primarily a range gun therefore, I would recommend the G17 gen 5. Try one if you can.

The G-19 has more after market parts available than any other platform- by far ! I put a Swenson threaded barrel and slide on mine with a Swenson melted platform slide for low RDO rear sight and a tall Tritium front sight to center in a Vortex venom from sight. My Glock -19 already has a reliable 4# trigger in it . All the parts mentioned I shopped and got big discounts on. I had a few thousand rounds thru it , now it has a much more accurate Swenson barrel and with the Vortex Venom RDO 50 yard IPSC K zones are dead meat :) It still fits in the original holsters too !

Traded my 19 for a 320 Compact and I am very pleased. Feels better in the hand and is more accurate for me.
