One of my favorite .22LR rifles

I bought a Remington 504 .22LR rifle N.I.B., for $436, from a salvage company that had bought-out a gunshop's rifle inventory when the owner retired. It shoots really well and the walnut stock has very nice grain. It's got a great trigger and, unlike later production examples, a really accurate barrel.

Yeah, that's what offhand shooting is all about...shooting without a rest. It's been a while and I'm not as steady as I was back then, but can still keep them kinda close. The trigger pull on the rifle is a little longer than some of my target rifles, but it's smooth and breaks cleanly. The rifle is pretty, but not just a pretty face!

I pillar/epoxy bedded the action and free-floated the barrel and it responded quite well, though it wasn't bad before the work.

Standing, unsupported...two hands on the rifle and if my memory doesn't escape me, no elbow against the body and no shooting jacket! I'm not a rimfire target master, just a guy who was pretty steady from the first time I shot a BB gun. Picture: Me at 13, shooting my third BB gun. I didn't know any other way to shoot back then and may have shot a half-million BBs, wearing out three BB guns and a couple of .22s before I was 18. I also could repeatedly bounce a BB tube from the hip at 20 feet or so. My favorite targets were my parents club soda bottles on top of our "burn barrel", chipping them from the top to the base, then dumping the mess into the barrel and getting another. I fired at least 10 cardboard Winchester tubes a week back then. I also mounted a Mossberg scope on my BB gun and could hit soup can tops at 50 feet about every shot. (Not bad for a smoothbore Daisy Pump.)

Match at our local club. Before anyone gets too impressed...we had under 20 shooters and never ran the match again. It included offhand shots at 100 on paper bulls and running deer, and 200 yards on paper targets.

No question about it...some days you're steadier than average.

Pat Riot: No it was 50 feet indoors, offhand. Not the best; not nearly the worst I've shot.
