I was “slumming” gunbroker looking at stuff that was near end but without bids. I ran across the little Butler and threw out a minimum bid. I have bid on several (more than double what I bid on this one) usually the ones that say Colt on the side, but not really caring. It’s just another cool and simple design that I have wanted. Well, I finally have one coming. $60 purchase, $10 shipping, $25 transfer. $95 total. No home run, but not too shabby either. I have never seen this configuration though, I usually see the two-tone in reverse configuration of this one. Not that colors matter to me... used, but supposedly good shape.

22 short, and I haven’t found a way to date it yet. There is so much misinformation out about these things that there is not a good way to even guess. I have seen references saying that these were available anywhere as early as the 50s to current guns being sold from leftover parts. I don’t know when it was made, but they sure do feel like the ones made in the 1870s, only these can actually be shot. Not to say that old ones can’t, it’s just tough to find 41rimfire ammo around at a reasonable price.

you should shoot that over a chronograph, I'm curious.
Curiously enough, I have been looking at chronographs the last few days. I doubt I buy one anytime soon as I just don’t shoot enough to justify one, and I don’t particularly care how fast a bullet goes as long as it is consistent in its behavior.

I think she was trying to send it directly. She told me that this is her first online gun sale and wasn’t sure what to do. On the bright side, I spoke to the transferring ffl today who was checking the gun out as he had just opened the box, apparently it’s nicer than the pictures led him to believe, so I’m hopeful that it’s actually nice.

Looks nice but it’s shot out. I might have to reline it. If I do I will chamber it for LR and only shoot shorts and colibri. Colibri will be fun out of this thing.

Edit:
Barrel not “shot” out. Breach face shows zero indication that the gun has ever been fired. It’s a factory new trash barrel.

You'd rather shoot colibri than short?

You can do the CB Shorts if you want something extremely low powered.

Just my thinking.

Is it just plated to look like brass, or is the whole barrel brass?

It’s plated, the bore is dark and is clearly zinc.

And yeah, in a gun like this I think I would prefer colibri. I have a box of shorts that will be ran through it before I drill it the extra 1/8 inch.

Zinc, yikes! Although my response would have been the same if you had said it was brass everything. Wouldn't think rifling would last very long at all.

On the short vs. LR side of things... I was just thinking that I wouldn't want to accidentally put a full-power LR in it. That's all.

I was also thinking Colibri ammo was pretty much the same performance as CCI's CB Shorts just with a different case length. It looks like the CBs have about +50% oomph though.

How can a new unshot barrel seem to be shot out to you?

Are you saying someone ruined the gun by replacing the barrel? ( not that it's worth all that much anyway) Where in the heck would you find a barrel for that Derringer?

New to him.

You can reline barrels. If it was professionally done, it would cost more than the price of the arm when new. However... due to some of West Kentucky's previous postings... I think we are in for a treat of a DIY barrel reline picture thread!

I hope to provide that treat, but legal and family drama continues to dominate the spare time. The plan at current time is to shoot what Short I have in it, and see how it does. If it does what I expect then the barrel will be toast pretty quickly. Then I will take a 1ga wire drill and cut the chamber deeper until a colibri will fit, but not deep enough for LR. I expect these to be pleasant on the ears, and easier on the wallet than shorts. If all that fails to suit then yes, pilot drill and reline is in order.

But I haven’t even gotten to the good part yet, I have done more work in my crawlspace shop and I am trying to decide what machines to put there. I have acquired prints and examples of a few very simple guns to replicate.

I think I need to pay closer attention to more of your posts. I've not been able to get my home shop put together yet... been collecting tool and equipment for years. Some day. ..

My dad bought this little Colt .22 Short at a gun show sometime in the 1970s for $20.
I thought Colt had bought Butler out a few years before that.
