Latest visit to Cabela's.

Cabela's is a foreign concept to me and my family.

Nearest one is 85 miles away.

They are viewed as a joke where only rich yuppies and out of state hunters go.

There is a Sportsman's Warehouse about 45 miles away and they have a great selection and decent prices.

I was just in one the other day and bought some powder and bullets. WSF was $27 a can. 124gr Speer Gold Dots were $22 per hundred.

I have no use for Cabela's or their skinny jeans wearing fake lumberjack bearded customer base.

No, rich yuppies and out of state hunters shop at Orvis and LL Bean.

I've got a couple $100.00 gift cards left over that I've been trying to use up,,, (The pay $80 for $100 card kind)
I say trying as even with the cards, after sales tax, I'm still being charged too much,,,
I keep hanging on for some kind of sale, but,,,,

When Cabela's first opened in KC, KS, the place was packed and sales were frequent and cleaned off the shelves. That lasted for a couple of years. During that time I spent thousands on guns, ammo, reloading stuff, ettc. Now I just pitch the sales flyers in the recycle bin without reading them...very sad.

I mostly buy online. Cabela's, Dick's, Sportsman's Warehouse, and the scalping LGS be damned.

I went last Sat (small store- Noblesville).
Was pretty packed with rednecks and yuppies.
Gun prices (gun library and some in rack outside) were stupid high.
That what they were marked at. Who knows what they'd sell em for if asked.........and how long it had been on the rack.
It's always easier to go down in price, than up.

I need some broadheads that nobody had within 50 miles. Plus the ol lady wanted to hit some shops down there for Xmas and it was there..........so I went.
Tried on a wool Outfiitter camo jacket. Figured out what size I wear.
If they go on sale, order one.

They did have G5 Broadheads, Striker and Montec, in 125 gr. Everybody else was out, or only stocked 100gr.
Price? about 4 bucks over what my reg places charge.
But they had them...............and that was a shocker.
Esp since the broadhead display area hardly had any space.

Taxidermy? OK, a stuffed bull moose is cool. Elk............ditto. Deer? Boring. Just shows you how crappy the deer you shoot are in comparison.
Buddy told me that yrs ago, after visiting the big main store out west.

Too many big bucks on the wall, the social impact not all for the best.

Granted, little deer aint super cool.
Just saying the amount of big deer displayed, according to my buddy......took it to grotesque.
Simply too many.
Eh, overdoing decor............happens all over, not just with taxidermy LOL.

Was not impressed w the small store. Dunno if a bigger one (Dundee) would be worth the drive.
Maybe for newbs it's a good place, everything in one spot.
I have about everything I need........and prefer non fashion items........like Ruger #1's, Blackwidow Recurves etc.
The clothing........might be OK. I checked on some boots and found nothing I liked.
Yrs ago I got some Redhead leather thinsulate/goretex boots and they were good, lasted over 10 yrs.
They were a bargain IMHO, dunno who made them.
Agree, dunno if real or imagined, but stuff I saw seemed "cheaper" in quality/material.

Cabelas is a 90 mile round trip for me. I have not been there for a long time. I do buy some things on line. I always liked their flannel shirts but they changed brands lately & I have not tried their new brand..
I bought a handgun last year using my CPL at Cabelas---they stuck me with a new employee---what a 90 minute nightmare,

Was at Cabela’s last week and a # of Varget was $39.99
Looking for Sierra .223 and the pickings was poor, Sierra 69 gr. Was 29.99, there was maybe 7 boxes of .22 Sierra left of it.
Plenty of Hornady in of the all calibers

Each year I visit a Cabelas (WI) shortly after Christmas. I look at all the nice toys & big taxidermy display , peruse the gun section , usually select a few ammo items on sale , always find some good quality clothing items at significant discount , and then go on my way.

No big deal.

We don’t have a cabelas near but do have a bass pro shop 10 min away. My daughter works there. They get a heck of a large discount on there brand stuff so works for me

I recall when the purchase of Cabelas by BPS happened, BPS made a big deal out of how they were going to operate the stores separately...

So much for that. Cabelas is now just another outlet for BPS products and lines. I used to buy a lot of Cabelas clothing because most of their stuff came in talls. The quality of Redhead isn't the same as the old Cabelas stuff...

I wonder how long before the start rebranding the stores?

Stopped by the Cabela's in Allen on Saturday.

I was surprised to find Hornady 100 gr XTP .32 cal bullets on the shelf. I also found some .32 cal pistol brushes.

One of the reasons you’re seeing more Redhead and less Cabela’s branded merchandise, is that Cabelas has a lifetime warranty (life of the product) and Redhead doesn’t. They are limiting their exposure on returns.

Gun Library Concerns at Cabelas
1. 10 day used gun return policy is gone.
2. Layaway is gone.
3. Gun locks are on every trigger now.
4. Knowledgeable staff is gone and replaced by hired minions.
5. Used guns are overpriced to support the 30-35% profit margin. No price deviation allowed.

So now they want full sticker price on a gun that you cannot test function (dry mechanical) with no pseudo warranty.

General Concerns
1. Bargain cave is shut down (temporarily?)
2. Ammo prices are higher than Academy, PSA, or Sportsmans Warehouse.
3. Cabelas brand (w lifetime warranty) is gone.

Never shopped in Bass Pro in last 12 years, Cabelas is becoming that way. Unfortunate they are only 10 mins away, did not have reloading shot last week either.
