The Times is saying that credit card companies are responsible for checking purchases of guns and notifying the authorities. So much for privacy while purchasing legal goods.

The ACLU has taken a stand against perusing legal purchasing as an invasion of privacy.

The Times has gone completely astray with this one, with some of the most asinine conclusions ever. They mention some shooters had a credit card on them or a credit card was used to buy guns. Really? Who doesn't have a credit card on them or uses cash to buy any multi hundred dollar purchase? Having a credit card on you or making purchases with it somehow taints you?

Here's quotes from Visa and Mastercard spokespersons which make sense:

“We do not believe Visa should be in the position of setting restrictions on the sale of lawful goods or services,” said Amanda Pires, a Visa spokeswoman. “Our role in commerce is to efficiently process, protect and settle all legal payments. Asking Visa or other payment networks to arbitrate what legal goods can be purchased sets a dangerous precedent.”

A spokesman for Mastercard echoed that sentiment, emphasizing its protection of “cardholders’ independence” and the “privacy of their own purchasing decisions.”

Here's the article:

So Sorkin wants to blame the means of payment? Does that extend to cash and the government? Does he propose the credit card company is responsible for the DUI/Vehicular Homicide by a drunk driver that didn't brew their own hooch? What about the credit card company for the plane ticket purchased by a terrorist?
Really?

This just in: child molesters often buy toys and candy to entice their victims, and sometimes they charge to a credit card.

Don't forget about the dog leash for the "lost puppy" as well as the windowless van. Complete with shag carpet, bleach, and duct tape in the back. Need credit cards for those too.

And yet they dropped nra and firearms company discounts, closed nra backed credit card accounts business financing...

It's all double talk.

The folks at The Liberal Gun Club Forum said this has no "legs". I agree.

They provide the propaganda which the killers want, THEY make these sick people into famous/infamous things for others to later emulate yet they want to blame everyone else but themselves. Pathetic.

No, the media is not the sole cause of it all, but for them to take no responsibility while blaming everyone else is yet again wrong.

I'll bet you've heard the Parkland murderer's name more times in the last two months than you've heard Mick Jagger's in the last two years.

Every time an attention craving malignant narcissist murders a bunch of people, they lavish them with attention.

If you had two dogs of average intelligence and every time one of them crapped on the carpet you gave him a treat, what do you think the other dog would do?

It's like the media are training sociopaths to be mass murderers.

At our Christmas gathering my father and one brother told me they were sick of the garbage in the local paper and are canceling their subscriptions that have come to their door for more than 30 years. They were the last in the family to do so. I chopped the cable wire 15 years ago and could not be happier. I only had to listen to others talk about the political adds of the last election not to actually watch or listen to them. Heartburn averted!

They could blame shoe companies if they wanted to, because there are very few barefoot killers.

Anything to remove personal responsibility and blame something that had no say in the decision making.

Almost all major purchases of all consumer goods in this country are completed using credit.

Perhaps we'd reduce DUIs/DWIs, hit-and-runs, vehicle collision fatalities if we made folks pay cash for their vehicles. Since motor vehicles kill far, far more Americans than firearms every year ...

My only contribution here is my opinion that the New York Times is an abomination. Certainly not real journalism, nor real news.

My one and only credit card is used to make 99 percent of all my purchases. It is a convenience that allows me to carry very little cash (less than twenty) and it is paid off monthly while I sit in my recliner. If they take away my right to purchase anything that is legal, I will drop the card and just start carrying cash. In the past ten years as i get older and older, I have the philosophy that if someone robs me and all I have is 20 bucks, so be it; if I have hundreds, there could very easily be a gun fight in the streets.

So after they find out that people can use cash to purchase guns, will they demand store owners cannot accept cash? I just want to know where the NY times gets these morons.

Someone should do a study to see how many shootings are media driven. The day in day out manipulation, treachery and sensationalism surely must have some impact.

The anti’s have pressured financial institutions to blackball the firearms industry. I’m sure this is another attempt to do so. The game they play since they can’t do away with the 2A is to make owning firearms as difficult and expensive as possible.

Next they will propose FBI background checks to get a credit card or maybe just add a check box to 4473 to apply for a credit card instead of a buying a gun.

I'm glad to hear that the credit card companies aren't caving to something so stupid. Like the spokeswoman of Visa said this would set a very dangerous precedent.

You can’t get internet clicks and ad revenue without a sensational story!

This Country through the media has always glamorized outlaws, killers, gangsters, etc. We know more personal info about Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie Parker, and Dylan Klebold than we do about any of our representatives who actually wrote and debate the laws we live by.

If the media put a ten year ban on publicizing any personal information regarding a mass shooter I will wager a guess that 95% of them wouldn’t do it (because there’s no fame in it.)

Of course they won’t, because blood sells.

Stay safe!
