45 G.A.P. Is one of the odd ones that does get entered. I have only had two guns in this caliber and Evidence from three shooting in the last six years.

I'm not.
That one was almost certainly stolen rather than bought by a criminal or gangster's girlfriend on a straw purchase.Surprised you have had that many...

One of the Park Rangers dept. not sure if it was the city or state, issued Glocks in 45 G.A.P. A few years ago. They kept them for about two years the sold them off to a local police supply company when the went to the Glock 17.Surprised you have had that many...

Last year I matched 5 guns to shootings that the ATF trace came back to a women that bought them locally. We know that she is making straw purchases, but the Feds will do nothing to her.
You would be supersized at the amount of new guns we pick up from street crimes that are not listed as stolen. 90% are drug related.

We do get a lot of found property guns. If they are not claimed in 90 days, they get destroyed.
I put in a letter requesting to get the magazines from found property guns so that I could have magazines at the lab for guns that didn't have them. It took two years and a lot of BS to get that approved. We had a Caption that was worried that someone would steal then and use them in a crime.
This is what I ended up with. I painted the baseplates orange to keep track of them.
I used to work at a gunstore for a few years and we'd have people like that come in quite often. When we had anything to substantiate our suspicions we denied the purchase immediately.
A woman coming in with a man wasn't hinky in and in itself, but when they looked a certain way, whispered quite a bit and acted odd it's fairly easy to tell.
When the men made statements like "I want that one" is when we could tell them to get bent.
So actually it wouldn't surprise me all that much. The drug game brings in a fair amount of money and many women are willing to immerse themselves into that as straw purchasers both because they're users themselves or because they're attracted to that lifestyle.

How do you “notify” a potential claimant? Run the serial number down, find an old 4473, cross check with DMV records.....?

A great example of why I personally don’t ever want a nice quality piece as a EDCCW or truck gun. I have seen some great pieces over the years that got stolen and later turned up like this, if they *did* turn up. Then to the evidence locker and destroyed, even if the owner was located. No sir, I’ll EDC my throw away POS gun, thank you very much. Hate to see good guns destroyed.

If a gun is reported stolen the SN# is entered into a national data base. When it is recovered the owner will be contacted if there is no pending case. If the gun is related to a criminal case, once the case has been adjudicated the owner will be contacted.
Most found property guns are not claimed and get destroyed. You would be amazed at how many found property guns we get.

30 to 50 a year. Sometimes they are rusty and dirty like this one. But sometimes they are like new. They get test fired and entered into NIBIN. If I get a hit to a shooting they become evidence. If not they get destroyed after 90 days.
