I am turning my Christmas bonus/OT cash into something useful this year. I am putting together my first AR. Goal with this rifle is budget oriented way to have fun, I am hoping to be around $500 with optics and everything. It will mostly be used as a range blaster although I may use it for deer hunting on crappy rainy days.

I am mostly decided on 7.62x39 for cheap blasting ammo and a bit more punch sub 150 yards hunting. This is also my first 7.62x39 and there appears to be quality hunting ammo available (Federal Fusion, Hornady SST) along with the cheap blasting stuff.

Lower: PSA MOE with upgraded 2 stage trigger. They just raised the price, I nabbed one for 169! It should be delivered Friday.

Upper: Undecided at this point, Bear Creek Arsenal is leading the pack currently but they are sold out at the moment. The price certainly fits for my build

Optics: I would prefer a low powered scope over a red dot. Leaning towards Tasco World Class 1.5-4.5 Real world out the door price $50

I usually dont buy cheap scopes but for a range toy I am willing to give it a shot. I may even end up liking it, the reviews I've seen are OK

I will certainly update as parts come in

the bear creek are good for the money, you could do a 6.5 grendel they have a complete 20in upper for 210 with discount code. you can also get steel case 6.5 for under 20 cents.

Welcome to it! I expect it’ll deliver what you need, but I’d prepare yourself mentally for an immediate desire to upgrade some part of it.

I second the recommendation to go Grendel over 7.62x39.

I was torn between 7.62x39 performance and 300 Blackout subsonic. Since I reload and had more time and more led than money I went Subsonic. Every since then I have been wanting another AR15 to go with this one. ;)

I recently got a BCA complete upper. Been very happy with it. Might also steer you towards the grendel since wolf and barnaul (monarch at Academy) both load inexpensive steel cased ammo for it and likely to feed better since doesnt need the curved mags the taper of 762x39 really needs for higher cap reliability. The 6.5 will also edge it out for longer range and power with a 123 grain sst at 2580 fps from hornady.

I just ordered the A2 HBAR style 7.62x39 from BCA. $189 with free shipping with discount a few days ago. Shipping took two days. Now I just need a good lower. I will be buying another upper from them soon.

The problem I found with 6.5 was SP or other hunting ammunition, is it’s not cheap. FMJ is everywhere. Where as 7.62x39 SP is plentiful AND cheap. It’s also reported to be quite accurate in the BCA rifles.

Stupid question, unless bear creek gets more uppers in stock, I've picked out an upper

Would any 7.62x39 bolt carrier group work with it? (Trying to shop around for best price)

Yes the bolt carrier group and charging handle should be interchangeable between manufactures so long as they are correct for caliber.

Stock comes and goes. If you call them, there is a good chance BCA can put together what you want from inventory parts. Otherwise you just have to check websites regularly.

This one shows in stock for the moment:

Building your first AR will lead to this.

Gunny NO FAIR

I was going to say that!

Spazzy, BE VERY CAREFUL. Gunny seems like a nice guy but he's an AWFUL MAN

You see he's a pusher.
He doesn't push drugs, or anything bad, rather he gets us hooked on building ARs. Then he posts pics like that so we feel sorry for ourselves because we'll never keep up with all the ARs he builds. And those are just the ones that are HIS. He'll make things worse posting pics of the ones he makes for friends. All this making us spend time thinking up AR builds that we "need".

So run while you can.

I have 2 ARs, one is waiting on an optic. Another has the lower and upper and the LPK is going to be ordered ASAP to complete the lower. Then I have several more stripped lowers in a box waiting to be built. I'm also lusting after some theme builds so the cycle never ends.

And let's not forget all of the calibers that one "must have" and aren't limited to:

223/556/223 Wylde
22LR
300 Blackout
6.5 Grendel
50 Beowulf

And that's before we get to pistol caliber carbines and AR-10s.

Add different triggers and optics to try (scopes and red dots), a zillion stocks, hand guards, grips, slings, etc and this just gets insane.

Then to add insult to injury , I'm trying to find time to build a rack to securely display them.

So I'll repeat. RUN RUN RUN. Hell, too late, the zombies won't get you but Gunny's got us all!

I picked up the psa lower today and I am impressed! Maybe I got lucky but the trigger is better than all of my other guns except a single shot target 22. Its my first 2 stage trigger and it feels awesome.

Looking forward to picking out an upper

Congrats on getting the lower.
How do you like the stock?

I have one of the budget PSA lowers on my bare bones AR and hate the stock. So I’m looking at the MOE kit for my next build. So feedback on it is greatly appreciated. I love the Ace Skeleton stock that I have on my 3 gun rifle. It’s only drawback is it’s not adjustable.

The moe pistol grip feels great. The moe stock is definitely an upgrade from the basic adjustable ones. It does lock up solid but it rattles which bothers me, i was going to upgrade to the CTR but it was more expensive. I will probably end up with a solid non adjustable stock.

Was going to order some more AR parts, but with have to wait. Just gave my daughter $2000 to cover the copay for her surgery at the end of the month.
Should take this time to take inventory of the parts I have on hand. I think I have about 5 or 6 extra barrels in my shop.

Gunny I hope her surgery goes well. Know she’s (and of course you and yours) are in my thoughts and prayers. please keep us posted on how that goes.

She was worried because she didn’t have the money. She didn’t know what to say when I handed her a check yesterday. I told her I would just put it on her tab. I think it’s up to just over $7000 now. :rofl: That’s money I don’t plan on seeing again.
I spend a lot of money on my toys, but always take care of my family.
But let’s not get off topic, we’re talking about throwing another forum member down the black hole of AR builds.
Here are the barrels I have sitting around for furniture builds.
From top to bottom.
* A standard Anderson M4 cut 16” 5.56 1/8 carbine gas length
* Bear Creek 14.5” 5.56 1/8 carbon gas length
* Bear Creek 18” mid weight 223 Wylde 1/8 mid length gas
* CDNN spiral fluted 16” S/S 5.56 1/8 carbine gas length
* CCMA lightweight 16” 5.56 1/8 mid length gas
* 16” lightweight S/S 223 Wylde 1/8 mid length gas (don’t remember the brand)

Gunny I’m so glad you can help her.

Gee Gunny you realize your parts bin is better stocked then some stores?

As for OP I hope his build is coming along. The rabbit hole gets bad. I’m getting antsy as November isn’t looking good here and I expect if we lose a few seats to antis we’ll have a CA style AWB and the NJ style mag limits. So I’m not sure what to do as the rumors flying are CODE RED and bad.

Well, CBC ended up being out of stock before i could pull the trigger. I pended things to the cart and forgot to push send, DOH! But by happenstance bear creek ended up being in stock again. I jumped on it and ordered asap tonight. I also ordered scope/mount, and 1x5 round mag, and 2x20 round mags. I will post some pics when everything is here and assembled.
