What firearms "terminology" makes you grit your teeth?

Sure. They fire handgun cartridges or typical rimfire cartridges.

You ought to see how I can turn my .308 Winchester rifle into a low powered rifle by using a cartridge adapter and .32 ACP ammo. But the press wouldn't know any different because it still goes "bang". :D
308 is already a low power rifle.

I wish I could be certain I was correct, but I used to have stripper clips to load M1 Carbine magazines, and do not recall them having spring steel in them ..... but anyone currently possessing them could prove me wrong .... :uhoh:
Stripper clips typically have a curved leaf spring that pushes against the face of the rim to help hold the cartridges in place.

Magazines enclose the rounds on all sides except one through which the rounds can be accessed to load the weapon. Magazines types for small arms can be of the fixed, tube, detachable box or rotary types, just to mention a few.

Clips do not enclose the rounds, normally only holding them by the rim. Some clips, like the en block clip of the Garand have taller sides to hold the rounds more securely.

To prepare a Garand to be fired, the clip is loaded en block into the fixed magazine.

Running....what scope are you running on your rifle. That makes my eyes bleed!
And the word Tactical! Everything is tactical now days. When are we going to have tactical toilet paper?
Well, i'm not sure about tactical TP, but we DO have John Wayne toilet paper. It's rough and tough and won't take s**t of anyone.

Whenever I hear the word “shotty” in reference to shotguns and it just makes me cringe, not sure why I just don’t like it .

"Shotty" is a shoddy use of language and it drives me nuts. I don't mind most things people can say but that one literally makes me cringe. I don't mind wheelgun to describe a revolver, but I hate it when I catch myself referring to one as a pistol.

I hear ya, every time I hear the word "TACTICAL" makes me run for my bucket. I also get sick of using "Navy Seals" to compare anything. Maybe Navy Seals use tactical toilet paper. I really do not care. Don't care what Beer they drink, or what Cigars they smoke etc. etc.

Certainly the Mannlicher style clips as used in the Carcano, Berthier, and even the M1 rifle do not have springs. I think we are off in the weeds here!

I think it just shows the craziness in letting terminology bother us. That's how we get off in the weeds. Lol

Especially with people new to shooting, I don't care what terms they use as long as what they intended to say promotes the responsible use of firearms. I might make a special effort to use the proper terminology in front of them to help them out.

What makes me "grit my teeth" is the intentional doublespeak used by those with an anti gun agenda to intentional mislead and misinform people to promote their agenda of disarming American citizens.

I think the one that gets me most is the AR-15 being a "Weapon of War" that only "Belongs on a Battlefield". Oh really? Well wasn't it specifically designed for law enforcement? If it's a weapon of war, why is there one in the trunk of every police car in the entire country? Why does all gun restrictions make exceptions for police use? If they need one, we need one, because police show up after the crime.

Or when they propose a bill with the description deliberately misleading. I saw a bill recently cannot remember the exact verbage, but it went something like this. If you believe in school safety, and the protection of our children, then vote yes to ban assault style weapons.
Of course the meat of the bill was to ban just about any semi auto rifle.

And of course Propaganda fake news outlets like CNN will be the worst. A constant barrage of lies, half lies and total Crap.

"I don't mind wheelgun to describe a revolver, but I hate it when I catch myself referring to one as a pistol."

The term pistol predates the invention of the semiautomatic hand gun , the origin going back several hundred years.

Pistol = hand held firearm = revolver , no?

Really? Even gun people often call a magazine a clip, it's part of the lexicon. I'm far more bothered by "mag".

Yes really. Maybe it is regional or generational not sure. Anyone I hear make reference to a "clip" generally does not know what they are talking about, so that is what I think of now. Its a complete turn off.

Maybe its a soda vs pop thing ? It bothers me which is what the OP was about.

SMLE charger clips and Mosin-Nagant chargers do not have a flat spring. I've never seen a Carcano charger, do they have a spring? And then there is the en-bloc for Garands.
Wrong :what: Every stripper clip I ever saw had a flat piece of spring steel in it, underneath the cartridges. :)

Nope, they just have a ridge that the snaps over the rim.
Maybe they should have tried a spring; I only ever found a handful of clips that didn't cost more than the magazine, and never did get the thing to feed a whole clip consecutively.
Just another example of a good concept and bad execution.
