Yesterday I received my order for the Quick Powder Measure Release and the Shellplate Indexing Roller for my Dillon 650 from EntirelyCrimson. The Quick Release is a very nice piece of kit, and I'm looking forward to using it, but the Indexing Roller does not seem to work on my one-year-old machine.

I've written EC explaining the issue and still awaiting a reply, but I thought to cover the issue here in case there are quicker explanations to be had. And also let guys here know about EC's customer service and response.

The issue is that with the ram at rest in the neutral position, the roller is still engaging the angled portion of the indexing cam surface, and not the vertical. In fact it seems to be about 0.250" short of that objective. This means the shellplate continues to rotate during primer insertion. In other words, the primer will be trying to hit a moving target.

In my mind the center of the roller needs to sit higher, so that the roller only strikes the vertical surface of the cam, thereby leaving the shellpate stationary during primer insertion. (This is the position the stock Dillon cam follower takes.) However, the roller only moves Left-Right and no amount of adjustment will allow the roller upward, past the point of tangency.

Ideas ?

You have one of the new framed 650’s, they changed the 550 too. The 550 they changed the name to “C” the 650 they didn’t note the change but there is also no BL650.

I would just return it to stock but if you try and get them to solve the problem, let them know you have one of the new “trussed” frames.

Mine worked. I did have to add some #10 washers under the heads of the bolts - those steel socket head cap screws will easily deform the soft aluminum that's made of. Once they do, whenever you move it, it will try to align itself back to those original indentations...Makes it difficult for fine adjustment.

It does sit like yours but seems to function. Shell plate snaps into place just before primer starts moving. Going fast looks like the moving target you describe, watching it moving handle slowly I can see the shellplate where it needs to be before primer moves upward at all.

I will note press seemed to feel exactly the same with it vs the stock piece....just more difficult to make fine adjustment of how the priming ram centers in shell plate. That was really only thing I noticed from the "upgrade" it took longer to adjust afterward.

Well, I will say that EC sent an immediate, same-day answer. That in itself was a most pleasant surprise. :)

But the photos they sent look exactly like my situation, meaning I have installed the part correctly. The roller is riding on the angled portion of the cam, which means the shellplate will have some movement remaining just before primer insertion. I consider 1) not making a complete shellplate indexing movement, and 2) shellplate movement during primer seating less than optimal.

Still I'm going to try to use this unit while continuing to survey competing brands. I'll follow this up in a week with my findings.

The indexing cam currently strikes a static steel block on the left side. The plastic indexing cam slides along the angled face of the steel block. Because of the sliding interface, you are supposed to keep a small amount of grease on that cam face (much like the auto case seating cam). If there is any stray powder, it's attracted to the grease and becomes a maintenance point.

The sealed ball bearing reduces the sliding friction and needs no external lube which keeps the machine cleaner.

Have you tried priming with it to see if it works?

It does work. But it "works" only because the ball and spring detent for the shell plate makes the shell plate snap the remaining 5° to get into position. This "snapping" action of the shell plate completely defeats the all the steps previously taken to defeat XL650 "powder sloshing".

The hole simply keeps getting deeper !
