I’m having a tough time finding cast bullets for 30-30 reloads. They have to be 160 gr .30 cal cast LFN. Anyone know where to find these critters?

I think the ones I cast are 168gr, I'd have to check. They are Flat Nose with Lube Rings

Missouri Bullet Co has a couple to choose from, 135gr and 165gr. Not clear to me if you are ONLY after 160s. If so, disregard. I havent tried these bullets from them, but have been happy with everything else I've purchased there (32, 9mm, 357, 10mm, 44, 45, 475 and a couple different for the 45-70). Plus, THR members get a discount.

While not exactly cast, I have used the Berry's plated 150gr .308 bullets. Been happy with them at about 1750fps for a fun affordable plinking load.

Scooter beat me to it... I get my .309"s from Montana. ..and my .349"s. ...and some of my .411"s. ...and, well, you get the idea.

Thanks for the tip about Montana. My recipe doesn’t call for boat tails, but they’re still lead flat nose so I don’t see why they wouldn’t work. They’re for a 30-30.

Curious what rifle you are loading for?

Before my early circa 80's micro-groove 336 was stolen, I cast lee 150 grain LFN sized as large as would chamber. IMO and experience, these rifles do best with bullets sized a bit 'fat'. Never used gas checks for this application (as shown in the Montana website), as they only add expense, and time wasted installing w/o any performance gains when fired @ around 1000 fps. I do like gas checks when I'm pushing bullets above 1600 fps or so, but a lot of other variable come into play too. Good luck.

Loading for a 336. Don’t really need gas check bases but there aren’t many sources for lfn bullets in 160 gr weight.

if you are not casting your own bullets then i would get either the berry's or x-treme 150 gr plated for the 336. both compaines make a 30-30 plated bullet. i used them in several 336's and winchester lever rifles. i used them in nra lever action silhouette matches.

Not sure why you are insisting on 160grn. When I first got my brother his 336, I tried both 150's and 170's... the 170's shot significantly better, so I've stuck with that since. As far as cast bullets, which is about all I load anymore, the alloy can cause more of a weight swing than anything else, and as one poster mentioned... a few grains up or down shouldn't be significant. Have you tried 170's? They are certainly easier to find...

Montana Bullet Works.

I like the Lyman 311291 RN GC 170 grs myself but the LBT 160grs LFN-GC fits your needs. I use .310" in my 336.

I loaded a batch of Extreme plated 150 gr fn over 3031. They worked well in my ‘94’s.

I ended up with 500 of them, so it’ll be a while before I try the Montana’s.

Stay safe!

The boolit I linked to is lubed and the gas check installed ready to load. So it's a Lead Flat Nose, "flat base". Exactly what you asked for You may not need a GC but it being there will allow a little more velocity without leading. The only "Recipe" I remember is what the Baldwin Sisters made on the Waltons. Get some other reloading data. I load for 5, 30-30s. 2 Marlin micro groove, 2 Winchesters and a Stevens 325 bolt action. All 150grn Lee FPGC from WWs. 160 isn't anything special. Adapt and over come.

If you you are interested in supporting small cottage industry, I have a friend who has been casting since 1967. He runs a bullet casting business out of his home. If you've ever met Ed, just meeting him made you a better person. He's one of those guys.
Here's the link to his website. You order from there.

Cool. Another Green Mountain Boy, and from the end of the state with less inbreeding. Will have to order some from Ed.
