So I just noticed rubbing marks right in front of the cylinder release that weren’t there before today. I’m not sure if some dirt just got in there when I went to open the cylinder once and scratched it, but I can’t get the cylinder release to touch the frame again. What I did notice was that when I push down (not forward) on the cylinder release where the knurling is, it makes a clicking sound. I took the cylinder release off and saw the little bar that it screws on to and its what is making the clicking sound.

Not sure if the cylinder release is supposed to have downward play or not, but can anybody with a S&W revolver tell me if theirs makes the same clicking when they press down on it?

Well, none of mine have locks, they all have the older style cylinder release, and I have no clicks.

Hmmm... Well, that’s a little concerning. Does the lock have any affect on the cylinder release internally? I know it’s not the shape of the thumb piece or anything like that because the threaded post clicks as well. It doesn’t click by just lightly pushing on it; you need roughly the same pressure as it takes to push the release forward.

I have a two year old 686+ and it does click when I push down on the release. I have had no issues with the gun. Good shooter lock or not.

I took this quick video of me operating the thumb release. Does it look like it’s operating a little oddly? It almost looks like the front of it dives downwards as the thumb release moves forward.

I don’t think I would consider that odd. Possibly a manufacturing variance but nothing out of spec or malfunctioning.

Apparently this is normal with some guns as @Spade5 gives evidence. Truthfully I have no experience with post-lock Smiths.

I wish I knew if it was like this the whole time. I just realized another thing; if the cylinder is closed, the cylinder release is solid. However, if the cylinder is open and the cylinder release is locked forward, the cylinder release is very loose feeling. It wobbles up and down with very little effort. Is it the same on your Smiths? Perhaps I’ll swing by the gunshop after work and handle a few. Haha.

I think that if I were to hand you either of my 929s with Hogue extended thumb latches you would probably freak out.

There is a lot of play in them which is ok because they are really just a release mechanism and the extended latch provides additional leverage.

Is this a gun with the integral lock?

What does that have to do with the cylinder release? Kinda like asking iffin it has wood or rubber grips. Apparently you have nuttin' knowledgeable to to contribute, but feel it's a good pl;ace to bash new S&Ws.

I have older 68s and I have brand new 686s. None of the cylinder releases have a noticeable "click". All of them stay forward until the cylinder is closed again and have no real play in them unless you move it back by hand. With the dings you have displayed on the gun in previous posts, I wonder iffin' it hasn't been dropped. I would direct my concerns to S&W themselves. They have excellent customer service and should be able to give you a definitive answer. If there is a problem, they will send you a prepaid shipping label to send it back to the mother ship to be fixed.

Insert my quote where I was bashing new S&Ws.

I only asked the question about the lock to see if I could give an apples to apples comparison to my own Smiths which have no lock and which have the older larger style release. I was unsure if the OP would know about the differing release latches so I asked about the lock which everyone seems to know about and which came about roughly the same time as the change in the latch. In other words I wanted to know if it was a newer or older model.

You were right though. I had nothing to contribute as it turned out except that I don’t have a clicking noise in any of my S&W revolvers.

Don’t be so quick to vilify. I’m sure your fed up with all the lock bashing that happens so I understand and empathize with such a jump to a conclusion. BTDT.

Sorry to the OP for the hijack.

Remember when the cylinder is open and the cylinder release is in the forward position there is only one small spring [Bolt Plunger Spring] pushing the cylinder release forward in the frame and at that point the Bolt Plunger Spring is extended reducing the force on the cylinder release allowing it to wobble more. When the cylinder is close the Bolt Plunger Spring is compressed by the much stiffer Center Pin Spring in the center of the cylinder that pushed the locking pin backwards into the frame hole. And depending on the model there may also be the Locking Bolt Spring that locks the end of the ejection rod into the ejector rod shroud that is also pushing on that center pin. When you have those two spring push the center pin into the cylinder release backward against the cylinder release's hard stop in the frame its going to feel much more solid.

Assuming its is functioning correctly I wouldn't worry about a little wobble in the release. My N-frames I use in competition are well broken in and they are very wobbly but still work just fine.
