I'm a slow learner I guess... I've been carrying for 25 years, and only just now I've found what I've been looking for the whole time.

A good old fashioned wheel gun.

I'm not sure exactly what took me so long, but I'm blaming it mostly on "capacity envy".

I never cared for revolvers much, never shot them much, just really had no interest in them. Then a few months ago I found a like new Ruger Blackhawk 41 mag in the gun store, it was produced in 1998 but is still in like new condition... I brought it home...it taught me that I can shoot revolvers a lot better than I ever could a semi-auto, and I do OK with semi-auto pistols.

I like the recoil, the solid but not painful "thump"... Makes me smile every time... Revolver recoil is like revolver triggers, clean and crisp... Glock recoil is like Glock triggers, "spongy".

It was months in the making, but the big Ruger single action convinced me to buy a double action for carry. I started researching Ruger and S&W, I eventually settled on a Ruger SP101 3 inch 357 mag.

I had to have all steel because I shoot a lot, I appreciate the weight and its advantages in a 357 revolver, and if I run out of ammo I can hit them over the head with it.

A fun fact... At 32 ounces loaded the 3 inch SP101 is 4 ounces lighter than my Glock 32... Its no pocket gun to be sure, but I don't pocket carry anyway.

I mostly carry appendix (1 o'clock) , and the SP101 carries WAAAAAAY better than the Glock 32 in that position, on me at least. It just disappears under a t-shirt, completely. There is no beavertail poking me when I bend over either.

I did have some trouble finding an appendix holster for it, I ended up using a Glock 32 holster that it just happens to fit decently well with the retention screw removed... A High Noon Mr. Softy holster (~$32)...it is a little short to fully cover the barrel so I ordered one for a Glock 17, longer and covers the barrel, but otherwise the same.

I also ordered a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 for it, I should get sometime before I qualify for social security (quoted 20 weeks)...the last belt I got from them took 8 months, but it was worth the wait, that was 11 years ago and I wore that belt every single day up until I outgrew it last year... I tried to say the belt shrunk, but nobody believed me.

I shoot the Ruger like I've been shooting them all my life... Even double action there is no low and left to struggle with. It just knows where I want them and puts them right in there....I guess its just a better fit.

I let my wife shoot it... She likes it too... She sent me a text earlier today being all sweet and thanking me for her anniversary present (I'm out of town working, truck driver)... I replied "You're welcome, I'm glad you like it.... What did I get you?"

Apparently I bought her a S&W 640 for our 17th anniversary.... Nothing says "I love you" like a new gun, right?

Anyway... We're all wheel gun crazy now... Not sure what took us so long, but at least we finally got here.

Ruger revolvers are my favorite revolvers too. I have the sp101s big brother, a 5" GP 100 its my woods carry in a cross draw mernickle the holster and gun was worth every penny. It's a great feeling to have confidence in your setup, I hear ya man. Congrats.

Public Service Announcement from the Modern Automatic Firearms Industry Association (MAFIA):

It has come to our attention that revolvers no longer work for self-defense against human adversaries. For your own safety, you must upgrade to a .380 caliber micro-pistol.

They don't work against humans but will take down bears, moose , and elk...:neener:

There are a number of reputable YouTube channels that are trying to sell that ... I didn't buy it

You do realize it was a joke, right ?

Revolvers only work against bears, moose and elk, no longer against humans ;)

Yes sir... And a good one at that.

I was just going along with what was said though.

There really are a lot of reputable sources saying they're "outdated" as a primary ccw... That is what I was saying "I didn't buy".

While I have nothing specific against the SP101 I have to agree with your wife. I have several J frame revolvers but the M640 is my favorite. My M640 shoot a extremely well with Winchester 145gr Silvertip .357 Magnum ammo.

Welcome to the revolver club, it's a fun place to be!

Taurus heard you. They brought back the 856, both in ultralight and steel frame. Same frame size as the 85.
And without the lock as well. If they had fiber optic or night sight options I would bite. I might anyways... but, I’d really prefer Ruger and Smith to get in on this.

I switched to revolver myself for CCW. As small as I was going to be able to carry at work I was running into six shot 380s that jammed in my hands. An LCR is slightly larger but due to the shape it hides well. In 327 it is also a more potent round with just as much capacity. Really wish there were more options given to new carriers to fit their needs instead of just telling them to look at what local LEO or military uses.

My wife still has the first issue SP 101 (125 gr. only) and while I am not into small bores I have carried it and with a proper belt and holster you can literally forget it's on you. It's a great snub for a reasonable price. With a 140 gr. .38 Spl. at 900 fps. it ought to get you home.

Me too. I have lots of carry guns, but my favorites are an LCR in a cargo pocket or a Bulldog in a coat pocket.

Semiautos are okay, but like the OP, I just shoot revolvers better and feel more comfortable with them.

I've been carrying Ruger KLCRs for close to 6 years now after trying 1911s, various SIGs, an XDs, and an SP101. The light weight of the KLCR sealed the deal for me. I use an OWB holster from CrossBreed with a speed strip in my right pocket. I've carried two KLCRs on occasion with the second in a cozy partner ankle holster.

I'm one of the transition pundits on the pocket 380 scene. I still have and love my snub nose revolvers for discrete as opposed to concealed carry but have to admit that my pocket 380s are smaller, lighter, hold a few more rounds and are almost as accurate and reliable as my wheelies. My favorite snub nose for the last three decades or so has to be my Detective Special and in fact the last few times I've had to shoot any kind of qualifying I've used that old piece.

So today it is often a snub nose on my hip and a 380 in my weak side pocket.
