Dick's is "doubling down"

No, the Fin in Middleburg Heights, conveniently located just down Bagley Rd., from the Berea gun show (this weekend) at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.
I frequent the Middleburg heights store quite often for reloading supplies, cleaning products, etc. I'm not sure when the last time you visited Avon Cabelas was, but they did away with a lot of the bulk ammo or at least moved it to where I couldn't find it.

I, for one, don't care if a yoga pants / sports bra store sells guns or not.

I don't either. I do care, however, if the yoga pants store directly lobbies congress for more gun laws, engages in public advocacy designed to take away some of my rights, allows its CEO to be part of Everytown, etc.

I similarly withhold my money from other businesses that advocate against other civil rights that I think are important. Have whatever business strategy you want. Sell or do not sell whatever you want. Open or do not open on Sunday. But if you begin advocating for the restriction of constitutional rights, now you're no longer just a market actor - now you're trying to move the state. That's different.

I can only wish their total immersion into bankruptcy thus having their share of the sporting market absorbed by the remaining legitimate sport franchises!

I agree and don't buy anything from Dick's and a good many other businesses. They have every right to sell or not sell guns or yoga pants and to lobby congress. We have the responsibility to hold them accountable.

You guys might think they're morons, but cutting unprofitable sectors is a very standard business move. The market appears to agree, given their stock is up 3.5% on the day.

It seems as though they created their own "unprofitable sector", however, which kind of makes one wonder re: their intention all along.

I (and my family) used to buy a decent amount of non-gun stuff from Dick's. I've bought gym shorts and Teva sandals and golf balls and golf gloves and raingear there and some dumbells. My wife bought the yoga pants and the like. Most of my daughter's softball gear came from there - for 5 seasons. Tennis racket too, I think. And I also bought some CLP, cleaning patches, .22lr ammo, and a pistol gun rug or two over the years - but it was small potatoes compared to the non-shooting goods I bought from them. They were (and are) the closest general sporting goods store to my house, and I'm in the phase of life where every member of my household buys/uses athletic gear. I was a pretty good customer for them.

But not one penny since they advocated against my rights. They could have closed the whole gun department and it wouldn't have changed my athletic gear purchasing patterns one bit. But they decided to crusade against an important civil liberty. I don't take kindly to that.

They thought it would be outweighed by the goodwill it generated and extra business in the other sectors coming from that goodwill. Which hasn't materialized. Oops.

I was already done with Dick's after the last ban, when they decided not to carry ars.

I don’t really think it’ll matter, I mean they’ve already lost the customers that will care. It really probably is just cutting an unprofitable department at this point. From where they are now it’ll probably help slightly.

I saw the news and to be honest, "who cares?" I will keep going to my LGS, Sportman's Warehouse or Cabelas locally. With the rise of internet sales I can get anything else that is not avaialble locally.

I say good riddance to Dick's Sporting goods.

Sounds like Dick's is using the Sports Authority path to success

lulzzz I grew up in Colorado and the Sports Authority chain was initially called Gart Brothers Sports, a very successful business, I bought some alpine skiing equipment from them from time to time because they'd have these big, blow out sales and ski gear was very reasonable. That said, they got greedy and political and now they are gone.

It unfortunately seems that Bass Pro / Cabela's is heading down the same road with their empasis on outdoor "lifestyle" merchandise at the expense of hunting & shooting equipment (and the trigger lock thing).

What's baffling about that is that their outdoor gear is getting worse. Cabela's had the better house-brand stuff, but it's all been phased out in favor of the garbage that Bass Pro makes/labels. That is really a store that is on its way down. Bad merger.

I pulled a Cabelas hoodie out of the clothes basket this morning to wear and its so think I can see daylight through it.

One of the local TV news stations reported this morning that Dick's Sporting Goods is planning on stopping ALL sales of firearms as well as ALL hunting supplies, including clothing.

It makes you wonder how long they will be able to stay in business.

Actually, sales are strong, profits are up, stock price is up, dividends have been steadily increasing. Dick's is doing just fine and will continue to do so.

"Who cares?"
How about the hundreds (+?) of employees who will lose their jobs to the foolish whims of a few misguided crusaders who probably don't ever need another paycheck?

One of the advantages of living in the sticks, is that I am not exposed to the drama involving big box sporting goods stores. The nearest such store is a Sportsman's Warehouse 50 miles away. Nearest Cabela's is 70 miles away. Never been to it. Stopped in a Dick's once in Phoenix back in 2012. Prices were horrible, selection was horrible, and no employees in sight. Not impressed. Regarding the only "local" big box stores, with a 14mpg SUV, they have to have some impressive prices for me to drive there rather than order it online and have it delivered to my house.

Still, I will go to the Sportsman's Warehouse to stock up on certain powders and to fondle guns that I will likely order from Bud's.

I live 15 miles from two fairly large towns with a combined population of around 70,000 people on the edge of some of the best hunting and fishing in North America.

Guess how many gun shops there are in those two towns? Zero. There is ONE hardware/hiking supplies/fishing/housewares/firearms store in the Idaho town. And WalMart. Guess how many marijuana dispensaries there are? Five.

Why? Because these are college towns full of liberals and snowflakes and millenials who have been raised by the mainstream media.

They are the future of this country and they hate it, hate guns, hate God, hate liberty, and they hate the constitution(except the parts that let them attack conservatives and act like spoiled children).

Sorry, but this is the way the country is going. My values and your values are dying and there is no way around it. Within a decade, there will be no more 2nd amendment, no 4th amendment, and we will lament the days that you could shoot a firearm at a range without the fear of a compliance drone detecting it and coming for you.

Double on down to the poor house. Their stock has taken a hit in the past few quarters since they started this nonsense. What Maroons!
Look at the gun makers as well - they too have dropped like rocks.

They are getting rid of slow-selling low margin products for high-selling, high margin products like gym clothes, T shirts and kids' sport stuff.
Sorry to burst bubbles, but there are a lot more soccer moms than shooters

Uh, so the NYT is just spouting right-wing biased fake news? https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/12/business/dicks-sporting-goods-stock-gun-control.html

"But his outspoken approach may have put pressure on his company, which sells much more than guns. In announcing its earnings on Tuesday, Dick’s said adjusted same-store sales fell 3.1 percent in the 12 months that ended Feb. 2 from the comparable period a year earlier.

In the fourth quarter, which included the holiday shopping season, adjusted same-store sales were down 2.2 percent. Net income for the quarter fell to $102.6 million, or $1.07 a share, from $116 million, or $1.11 a share in the year-earlier period.

Public reaction to the policies Dick’s introduced after the Parkland shooting was a “meaningful driver” in the declines, Mr. Stack said in a conference call with analysts on Tuesday. Intensifying competition from Amazon was another, analysts said."

I wouldn't call it doubling down, where they are now this is probably a sound marketing decision. They aren't selling any guns anyway. Why take up floor space with merchandise that isn't selling. I'm not sure how much it'll help them, but the idea is to replace items that aren't selling and use the floor space for more items that they do sell.

I think that the miscalculation that they made is that they were one of the few stores that sold both guns and golf clubs. Lots of shooters also play golf or other sports. They could shop for guns as well as other sporting goods items all under one roof. There are already lots of sporting goods stores that don't sell guns. If shooters aren't coming in they not only lose the gun sales, but it impacts sales of other merchandise as well. There is already lots of competition for the other merchandise.

I haven't stepped foot in a Dick's since they did their first stint on guns. And I have young kids going through sports like water currently, so they will be out a significant amount of money from my household in the next 10-15 years. There are plenty of other sporting good stores that don't have an agenda that I can buy cleats, basketballs, and pads.
