"The representation of the penis as a weapon, cutting knife, dagger etc., is familiar to us from the anxiety dreams of abstinent women in particular and also lies at the root of numerous phobias in neurotic people." Sigmund Freud 10th Lecture "Symbolism in Dreams"

Sigmund Freud believed that people who were afraid of guns and supported gun control had issues with their sexuality and were emotionally immature.

Just my thought for the day.

It isn't that they cannot stand it; it is that they cannot comprehend it. They have been told since Kindergarten that someone else will take care of them, nothing is their fault, yadda, yadda. So it makes sense that something that gives you freedom, security and that comes with responsibility is something they would fear.

Anti’s are afraid of the nut jobs with firearms; I don’t know that I am afraid but I am confident that there are nut jobs out there that have access to a firearm. I can see their side of the concern. Unfortunately, the head butting comes when both sides realize that the nut jobs are far too many to identify or control so the only absolute resolution to nut jobs with guns is no one has a gun. So in lays the rub.

Private citizens who are opposed to gun ownership have, for a variety of reasons, rejected the very idea of using a gun to defend themselves against violent criminals. For them, it's not a win-win situation; that is, them safe and the criminal thwarted. It's not even win-lose where they may or may not be successful in defending themselves. They see it as break even versus lose. At best, a gun in private hands can never do them any good. In the wrong hands, it could easily do them grievous harm. Therefore, in their minds, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by banning guns as well as everything else that could be used against them.

Not all anti gun people have problems with their sexuality or are immature.

Not all republicans are pro gun.

Not all Dems are anti gun.

Not all of any particular race is bad/good.

Not all anti gun people are nut jobs.

Not all pro gun people are nut jobs.

I could go on adnausem.

The point is people and issues are complex. Each person comes to every issue with their own history/experiences/baggage. To say that “all” of anything is any certain way is a very simple minded way of thinking. It’s grade school thought, and really isn’t going to move any issues forward.

The challenge for us is to help people understand that guns are legitimate tools and that not everyone that enjoys them is a homicidal maniac. The latter is the only example of gun owners that are seen on "news" reports.

Many theories of people like Freud have ascended and then fallen into disfavor over the years. I would not want to put all my eggs in that basket, or John Harvey Kellogg's, or John Brinkley's.

What does that say about guys who prefer 20, 28 and .410 over 12 ga.? ;)

They're recoil sensitive.
They're sensitive when someone recoils from them.
So what it means is that guys who prefer shotguns smaller than 12 gauge have a neurotic fear of abandonment, or in laymen's terms, "mommy issues".

I can't speak for every user of shotguns, but I use 410s when I consider it appropriate, 28 gauge for close up quail, 20 gauge for farther out quail and other birds, and 12 gauge for pheasants and trap shooting. Mostly, I want the meat in as good condition as possible with as few pellets as possible. No mommy issues here.

Tongue in cheek remark...

I don't believe modern psychologists place a lot of credibility in ol' Sigmund these days ..... but many antigun people do seem to have inordinate fears of armed people and weapons, and often are "projecting" their own perceived insufficiency especially into others.
And even that is not always true ....

I'm compelled to disagree with your statement on Freud.

With the development of several theories of the human personality Freud’s is no longer the only one with validity or relevance. This does not mean that it should be rejected out of hand solely based on how its interpretations impact you. While no professional is required to blindly accept the key points of any theoretical paradigm, the rejection should be based on solid scientific grounds.

Today psychology, both theory and practice is eclectic. In the post-modern era of psychology new approaches and accompanied criticism abound. The average patient seeking treatment of a mild to moderate non-psychotic condition probably is not a good candidate for a Freudian approach. This statement is based on the time and cost of psychoanalysis. In its place any one of the cognitive based approaches are less expensive, thus more likely to be fully utilized by patients who have limited means and whose insurance would never cover psychoanalysis because of the expense. It isn't really a credibility issue for most well educated psychologists or psychiatrists, but rather seeking a less expensive if somewhat less satisfactory solution. It is one of the reasons why far too many people are written prescriptions rather than having their problems addressed and brought under control.

On your second point, I agree that some, but not all, of anti gun advocates recognized their own insufficiencies and that increases their fears.

They are driven by a fear that was put into them by something illogical/irrational.

Super heroes have abilities that don’t exist. If we could ban all clouds there would be no floods.

There are some people that actually believe that if we could make legal firearms illegal, crime would magically stop, logic and facts are offensive to them.

Anti-gunners are still human. Humans of all courses are prone to their own personal logic, lack thereof, and stupidities.
You can't paint them under a blanket cause, you need to understand their personal ones and, yes, you do need to understand them if you're trying to convert them. You can't combat what you don't know.

I have known a few people who were both yellow dog Democrats and gun enthusiasts. I still can’t grasp that concept. They never voted on issues. They simply walked into the voting booth and marked straight party ticket. And one in particular was highly educated (research chemist). And he bought one of the first S&W 500’s. I don’t think that represents all Democrats. But I’m not sure many Democrats like him understand what they’re actually voting for when they do vote.

Flip that and I know republicans that don’t think we should own AR-15’s or any semiautomatic firearms and hunting is cruel. But they love them some ribeyes. Again, the concept is lost to me.

It means they have the confidence to use harder to master weapons and take on the others who have to compensate for poor skill sets by using a 12. Same thing as those guys who have to put 36" tires on their trucks and use a ladder to get in.;):p

Some plantations only allow smallbore shotguns because fewer pellets in the pattern fewer birds killed. I like 6.5lb 12ga game gun with 2&3/4" chambers but lot of older folks want to carry something that weighs 1 to 1.5lb less w/o going into expense of using old 2" chambered English or French gun.

The lack of understanding on both sides stems from different backgrounds and, therfore, different values and beliefs. When someone asks me why I don't mind guns I tell them I was brought up in family that used them for hunting and shotgun games. This is very easy for someone to grasp.
