That one came up for me last fall. But by the time I had put ear plugs in and walked back over to do the deed the deer had already gone to the great grassy field beyond.

I felt bad. He was a big buck and was just out chasing a girl. $4500 worth of damage and no girl...... We both had a bad day, but decidedly more so for him.
I took the spike that vandalized my jeep home after. He's been staying in my freezer.

A drunk neighbor/would-be gang-banger was screaming at my dog, threatening to kill him for daring to bark. I came out just as the guy grabbed a shovel and started to jump the fence. I took two steps back and presented my Glock. He dropped the shovel and backed off.

The police and ICE gathered him and some of his buddies up two days later. It's been fairly peaceful since.

Driving home from work at 1AM with the top down on a nice summer night. Hit a red light at 28th St. and 38th Ave when a person came from around the building on the corner demanding a ride. He had his shirt off and draped over his right arm. I pulled my carry and pointed it his way saying I was not going his way. He ran off and I ran the red light.
Reported the incident to SPPD, they did not seem too concerned.

I have dispatched a good number of ground hogs with my carry gun.

I drew and fired a Baby Browning in a shop, in order to stop a man from stabbing a female security guard (or what I believed was going to be a second stab).
It was a warning shot fired into escalator steps in the corner of the shop. At the time, given the distance and the plywood office behind the goblin, that warning shot seemed to be the best choice.
When I armchair analysed it after the incident, I came up with a better way to handle it.

I also made some mistakes during a foot chase of the perp.
Ultimately it ended up okay. The perp was apprehended and the security guard survived (she was knocked out, not stabbed). From where I was standing it looked like a root of neck stab, but the goblin over-reached and hit her with the edge of his hand. Knocked her out and was standing over her with the knife when I dropped my groceries, drew from my pocket and fired.

In 32 years, I've never had to show it, draw it, or use it for anything other than pulling my trousers down an inch or so. G-d willing, I never will. I did observe a crime 30' away from me while in my car a few years ago...my local PD handled it with no trouble. Not being a LEO, I did not participate but stayed to watch in case I could help the LEOs in any way they asked. Fortunately, they needed no help. I remained invisible to them and perp. Best case outcome.

A few times.

Once I pulled it on a guy in a 1 ton dodge with a 40’ stock trailer who tried to legitimately run me off the road because I had to brake check him when the mustang in front on me locked his brakes up and I had 2 options. Hit the brakes or go off a steep embankment. Mr. Ram was apparently very unhappy he had to hit his brakes. He apparently was also not expecting a 21 year old (36 now) in a PT cruiser to be carrying either and was even more unhappy (I assume) when he tried the second time to run me off the road and I pointed it straight at him. He abruptly locked his brakes and jackknifed his trailer.

Second time was to put down a paralyzed deer I’d seen on the side of the road. Called the local wardens and no answer so I called my warden and he gave me permission because he was over an hour away.

3, 4, and 5 were my first pig kills with a pistol and a triple at that. Still very proud of that one. XD45 at 40 yards for my first shot. Next two were ~60 yards in a span of around a minute. None of them were big though. Around 50 lbs.

6 was another hog that walked up to the trail I was walking. One shot to the chest ended his adventures.

7 was a pack of dogs I had walk up on me while still hunting bearing their teeth and growling. Then they tried to encircle me. The first dog, a pit (I do love that breed) hit the ground with not so much as a yelp and the rest scattered.

8 was when I picked up two guys at Walmart with car trouble to take them home and no cell phone. I agreed to take them but I had them raise their shirts to show me their waste bands, empty all pockets, raise their jean legs to see their boots and socks. They seemed a little uncomfortable with all this but I told them it was for their protection. I then made it known I was armed, proved it, and told them I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot them if they tried anything. Not in a jerk kind of way. More of a matter of “here’s the deal”kind of way. One guy had a pocket knife and I requested he temporarily surrender it into my possession for the trip. He did with no argument and even said he completely understood “Can’t be too careful these days” were his exact words. They asked if I was a cop or something. People always think that about me. Nope. Not a cop. Just raised with them. They didn’t try anything and we actually had a great discussion about guns on the way to their house way out in the sticks. The knife was returned and they insisted I take gas money for the ride. I politely refused. Seem harsh for doing a good deed? Well, momma didn’t raise no fool. And dad taught me to always be aware of my surroundings.

The 45 has since been given to my father and now I carry a 10mm. It hasn’t been unholstered on a person but has on a few pigs.

I was in the military and yes I fought for my country against some very bad people who sought to do harm to innocent people. Semper Fi, carry on.

Edit: Yes I have in civilian life as well.

I have multiple votes. In addition to one instance while on security duty when a belligerent and armed (non-firearm) individual was held at gunpoint for local authorities.

I was the "victim" of an attempted car jacking. While driving to an out of town job early in the morning, around 4AM I stopped at a wayside to use the facilities. After shutting off the engine and pocketing the keys, I was approached by a wild looking individual. I closed and locked the driver door, and quickly locked the passenger door also. He proceeded to shout partially coherent obscenities at me, then moved around to the passenger side and tried the door. He then produced a folding knife and began beating at the glass. At this point he was looking down the business end of a Browning Hi-Power cocked, locked and ready to rock. Had he broken the glass, I would have fired. He ran off into the woods, and within seconds a Highway patrol entered the parking lot at high speed, lights off. Another motorist had been accosted and driven off, rolling the guy with the door and called 911. The guy was apprehended, in possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia. He was wanted, and later convicted of 2 nearby burglaries, including a brutal home invasion where he badly beat an elderly lady to make her give up valuables. When I was questioned, the county sheriff inferred that I should have fired. He also said thank God it was you he went after, not some soccer mom with a couple of kids in the SUV.

I have also used my sidearm to dispatch numerous nuisance critters and fired warning shots to chase off bears while camping.

Hi...
I used my carry gun one time to finish off a raccoon that had been hit by a car. I just couldn't let it lay there in obvious pain.
I also used it to shoot a red fox once...mangiest, most pathetic looking creature I have ever seen.

I can't believe some of your choices.

Sorry, I don't think it's a good idea to share such information with strangers in an open forum. It's just not for me, good luck.

I'm not sure what choices you can't believe?

It's an anonymous poll...

1.5 incidents.
As I have said elsewhere I have worked in the pawn industry for over 30 years in two counties in Fla.
Incident 1: A customer pulled a knife on another customer because he thought customer #2 cut in line. I drew, instructed him to drop the knife and leave. He stared at a cocked 6" Anaconda while holding a 3" Schrade and decided to comply with my instruction.

The .5 incident: My female coworker and I were leaving the pawn shop after dark (midwinter) and someone came up behind her as she was getting to her car. She drew her CZ and he backed off quickly and ran. She looked over at me to see if I had seen it and I was standing there with Thumper pointed at where his head had been a second earlier.

And.... there it is.

The thread is about occurrences of usage, not about judging the prudence of those usages, or of discussing them. Those who feel they shouldn't share them, well, aren't.

You did not have a "None of your darn business" selection, so I did not vote. I don't understand why people ask these questions.

Trying to get a feel for the usage or non-usage of firearms by members of THR community. Anonymously.
One doesn't have to detail the hows and whys as some of the people responding to this thread have.
All of the possible poll responses were legal uses, wasn't asking anything for which someone could be prosecuted even if their name was attached to their answer, which, again, it was not.

I think it is a valid question, asked in a reasonable manner. The poll is currently showing that use vs. an animal is a lot higher than I would have expected (granted from a small and non-random sample), so I've gained information.

I would think the OP should add this to the poll. One of the many reasons I carry is for protection from angry animals both in and out of the woods. Many dog attacks have been stopped by the use of a sidearm.

That is the one time I drew mine. Public trail through the woods. It was a dirt path. I had a large dog come running right at me. I drew and shouted the dog stopped the owner just about crapped his pants.
