I've really been wanting a new 7x57 rifle. I have an 8mm Mauser, and I like it, but I think the 7mm would be a more versatile round, and I would prefer a new rifle. Are there any new manufacture 7x57 guns on the market?

I guess I could get a new 7mm-08 since they are so similar, but I would prefer a 7x57. If they are as scarce as I think, what suggestions would you guys have for a general (plinking/maybe hunting) 7mm-08?

Winchester made a run of Model70 Featherweights (and Supergrade, IIRC) in 7x57. They're often listed on Gunbroker.

Ruger made their M77 and No1 in 7x57

AFAIK, Cooper makes a 7x57.

And I'd bet a custom rifle built on a Borden intermediate-length Ridgeline action would be a pretty sweet rifle.

-I've had to settle for some South American Mausers, although I'm dickering over one of Bubba's old Remington Rolling Blocks... .
A few years ago when I bought my Yugo M48, they were cheap. Now in good condition they run $500+. If I can find a good milsurp for a decent price, I may go that way. I can't see myself (even though I'd like to) spending a couple thousand on a new custom. If that's my only option, I'll have to settle for a 7mm-08.

Yeah, I hadn't paid more than $200 for something in this category (well, except for that Finn New England Westinghouse Nagant that caught my eye).
Now, even a thoroughly Bubba'ed Rolling Block carries a $600 price tag.
Yeesh!

Idk how new you're wanting but a cz 550 American would fit the bill. Here are some options on gb, another route would be a savage action, prefit barrel, and whatever stock you want (roughly 900 all done).

Those are only a few items, I'd check out a full search and see if anything trips your trigger, being an intermediate length you could squeeze it into a savage short action, or stay with long actions in general.

There are several on GB listed in "Factory New Condidtion" including Montana Rifle, Sako, Winchester M70 and a rather nice looking Rigby at a mere $9,100...

There's none available I know of in any mainstream offering. When I was at the Dallas Safari Club show in January, some of the premier rifle builders had some new offerings chambered in 7x57 (ie: Griffin and Howe, Rigby, Mauser, etc.). Those rifles are some of the prettiest bolt-action beauties I've ever seen. They're are the opposite end of the spectrum from an 'economy' rifle.

If you don't want to spend the big bucks, there are several gently used or NOS that pop up on GB in modern configurations. My first rifle was a 7x57 sporterized on a model 98 receiver. It is still one of my all time favorite rifle and cartridge.

The 7-08 is a fine cartridge but I would rather have a 7x57.

A Chilean 1895 Mauser Carbine introduced me to this excellent round. It came with a white parade sling and nickel-plated bayonet. Pretty nice for $150, I think.
It's not an "O.V.S.", but it's historic enough for me. Fun and accurate.
The Rough Rider reviews were pretty impressive for the 7mm Mausers, too.
Apparently they impressed John Garand, John Pederson and the British military, as they all came up with variations on that theme.
Pity that they didn't follow them up.
I'd love to have a 7mm Garand.

I’ve got a Thompson Center Compass in 7mm-08. It is inexpensive, extremely accurate, has an adjustable trigger, and threaded barrel. The stock is chintzy, but the rifle is loaded with features and is an incredible value.

I’m not opposed to the 7mm-08. It’s just the thought of having a replica instead of an original. Still, though, the replica is just as good.

If money were no object, I’d have one of everything. As it is, I’ll need to go with something reliable at about $500 or less. If this were my only rifle I’d be a little more picky, but those Thompson-Centers are looking better all the time. Maybe after I retire in a couple years I’ll be able to find a donor and do a re-barrel; maybe even a nice wood stock too.

I’ve still got my eyes open for a 7x57, but for now, does anyone else have a recommendation for a 7mm-08?
