Hi guys, I am going to build a Howa rifle in 6mm BR.

A Krieger barrel is on order. I have a 243 donor rifle.

I am set on my projectile and twist, but am not sure what stock or chassis to go for!

I am looking for one that will maximize accuracy potential without breaking the bank.

Please recommend stocks or chassis to go for.

Thanks

Howa 1500, for 200-300 yard varmint hunting and 200 yard benchrest shooting. Local club competition not serious level benchrest.

1:13 Twist for 65-70grs.

I put my Howa Mini into an MDT LSS-XL. It shoots great, but it’s heavy and expensive. It cost the same as my graphite McMillan stocks, or more. Looks nice, shoots nice, but looking back I wish I had gone a different direction.

I think you’ll like the 6mmBR. I recently got into the 6BRA (Ackley variant) and find it almost as easy to tune as a .308 and very accurate.

As far as stocks go, I’d look at McMillan first. They have a great variety and most compatible with your action. The only down side is the 5-6 month wait.

One of their options I’d consider is the A5

I've been happy with the Bell and Carlson stock on my 1500. They usually have them in inventory and they're less expensive than most. I believe they're made with a solid metal rib instead of inserts like the cheap stocks. I put a varmint/tactical style on my .223 and it made a big difference at 200 yds.

What would you do different
Honestly I'm a little embarrassed by it. I have a fairly robust gun budget. Sometimes I buy things that I think are cool, and anyone looking at the product could tell that it isn't going to be what I really want. My intent with the howa was a lightweight backpacking gun. I liked the folding stock on the mdt. I could clearly see the weight was going to be an issue, and I ignored it. The rifle I ended up with is a fair bit heavier than my M70 fwt in a graphite mcmillan stock, and shorter ranged. If I want to do a backcountry hunt, I'm still going to take my M70.

What I should have done, aside from not doing the project at all (and I did it because I got a screaming deal on the barrelled action), is put it in another mcmillan. But, with all that said, I like my Howa/MDT and it shoots well. I took a few deer with it this year. I guess if I run into someone looking to buy the MDT I will put a McMillan on it, otherwise it's fun to have.

Then again, I don't even know if McMillan makes a stock for the mini.

for some time i have wanted to build a light weight deer/varmint rifle in a benchrest cartridge like the 6ppc and 6br and there variants, depending on the action i can get. my cz 527 would be nice, but even a 700 would do fine. i do wonder how these benchrest rounds would acted with a very light barrel like a 0 or #1 contour.

If barrel weight is a concern, and there’s room in the budget for it, you might consider a PROOF carbon fiber option. I went with one on my customized FN SPR. I had some doubts about it when I started developing loads for it but after sorting out some tangential issues I believe it lives up to the marketing claims of having the weight of a sporter contour with the performance of a target contour.

This was for a .308. My 6BRA is strictly a target rifle dedicated to F Class shooting, for what it’s worth

i could never afford a proof barrel, but on the little cz ation even a med barrel will be light. i was thinking 22 inch with the 6ppc, which i think is about optimum with it. i would like to do a mannlicher to.

I'm running a Krieger 13.5 twist, 1.25" straight as my short range barrel. It loves the Berger Column bullet ahead of 31 gn of Varget. Averages a little less than 1/4" (center to center), with occasional forays into the sub-tenth range.

Best of luck with yours!
