These have been bugging me for a long time, compared to what is currently available these forearms seemed huge. Particularly the ones that could double as a hoof rasp for livestock. Thankfully the development of Keymod and M-Lok have offered better alternatives to the Picatinny rail. Wonder if there is much of a demand for these? 001.JPG

I handled a Larue the other day with a slim hand guard. My eyes were opened. I could not get over how nice and slender it was and it actually made me like ARs a whole lot more. Since then I have been researching and have found that DD and Bear Creek have offerings. IMO, no. Those fat forends can be used as clubs for occupiers.

What I have found on two of my rifles is one keymod and the other mlok, one is noticeably thicker than the other, and makes me not like it as much. Both however are still slimmer than my pic rail on another.

I too like the slimmer forends. I like quadrail as well, but those (two M4orgeries and one D. P. M. S. LR-308) are equipped with vertical grips .... which I also like.

While I love the look and feel of the MOE SL from Magpul, it anoys me that it doesn’t fit on a triangle handguard cap and it blocks the sling loop on the FSB. I get those things are easy to overcome when building from scratch, or by replacing OEM parts, but most of the time when I want to use a non-freedloated handfaurd it’s when I’m using it as a replacement for a commercially assembled upper receiver where simplicity or cost are my key factors. I really hate tearing apart a factory assembled upper just to put a handgaurd cap on it. At that point why wouldn’t I just replace the gasblock with a low-pro and put a free floated handgaurd on it.

The ALG is my go-to slim handguard, and Aero Precision Atlas is my go-to chubby handgaurd.

I went to slim handguards and rails when they first start coming out. I never liked the cheese grader quad rails.

I even went slim on my 18” side charger build.

I just got this in today. It has the new Atlas rail.

I like the Magpul slim handguard so much that replacing the front handgard cap is not a big deal. It's really not that hard and doesn't take much time. When I use a free floated rail I don't use a barrel that is drilled for a front sight tower. I don't like the front pin cut showing. It's easy to replace a barrel.
I had been buying Delton mid-length lightweight barrels from JSE Surplus. The barrels came with the sling swivel and front sight parts. They just have to be installed. The barrels come with the triangle handguard cap. I would just replace the handguard cap and not install the the front sling swivel.
The same barrel from Delton was $5 more and just a little more for shipping, But it didn't come with sling swivel and front sight parts. Those parts were extra. I contacted Delton and asked if they could install a round handguard cap on the barrel. I was told yes and that there was no extra charge. With shipping and the front sight parts the barrel cost about $12 more then from JSE.
When the barrel arrived it had a triangle handguard cap and there was a round handguard cap in a plastic bad in the box. I called Delton and asked why they had not instaled the round cap. I was told that it was a mistake on their part and that if I shipped the barrel back to them, they would put the round cap on, but I had to pay to ship it to them. :( I told the nice lady thanks but no thanks and just replaced the cap myself.
This was the build.

I know that if you don't have the tools it's not so easy to change parts, but most of us know someone that has the tools. I have a lot of friends that stop by. :) If you don't have a friend with AR tools your local gun shop may be able to do it for you.
Every rifle I have built in the last two years, I have used slim handguards, or a slim, or ultra slim rail. But the other night I did build a M16A4 clone for a friend and used a knights Armament quad rail that the Marine Corps used.

I was never a fan of the quad rails, to me they're uncomfortable to the point that I'd much rather use a "traditional" smooth forend and never have accessories attached. I'm honestly amazed it took as long as it did in this day and age for something like Mlock and Keymod to make it to the market.

I've got the MAGPUL SL on a couple of my guns (Colt LE6920 and an Colt AR6951 9mm), great foreams for a gun with a fixed FSB:

For free floats I really like the SLR Rifleworks Helix series, well made, thin and lightweight.

I owned one 4rail forearm on my 1st AR and that was enough. I've gone to all MLOK and found that I prefer a pistol light at the 12 o'clock position and a handstop. That's about all the rail space I need.

Nice pictures guys. Guess I'm not the only one that likes thin ones. Really impressed with Magpul and how well they're made. Got a SL version for a piston unit and everything fit perfect. As mentioned previously, it would be nice if they could be compatible with both round and triangular retainers. Our club is having a swap meet, maybe I can get rid of those oversized units.

the bravoco kmr rails were the ones that sold me on slim. the only AR i've built in YEARS that has fat handguards is one that required it for a suppressor to slip underneath and because of the stupid dolos barrel nut system. (which i love/hate)

Yeah, for me it’s really not about any of those things. If I’m going to build an AR15 with a non-free-floating handguard it’s because I bought something off the shelf for a very simple basic setup or budget build for a kid, friend or family. I have all of the tools I need, and use them to build, rebuild, etc. It would be nice to use an OEM SL as a drop in replacement for a cheap, off the shelf upper that comes with a crappy handguard. However, it’s really not a drop in, and it obstructs the use of the sling swivel. Can I buy and aftermarket sling attachement and can I replace the end cap? Of course, yes, but then it’s not really a drop “OEM” replacement and seems like a fail to me, especially the sling swivel.

I’m not a huge fan of FSB to begin with, so if I’m pulling it off, it’s not going back on, if I’m replacing the gas block, the cap, the handguard, sling attachment, then why did even waste my time and not get individual parts? If building from parts I’ll be use a free-floating handgaurd since that is my preference. The couple of times that I went from a pinned FSB to a low profile I just cut down the base with a hot saw and used a grinder to contour the gas block, Cerekoted it and pinned it back on. That works and looks great. I don’t see much use in throwing away a perfectly good barrel. Though sometimes they end up being worthy of trading material.

It all depend on the look you want or what you plan to use it for.
I like free float rails that come up to the flash hider, other like the barrel to stick out a little.
Now when it comes to a gun that will most likely see hard use, I prefer a front sight tower.
The Magpul MOE handguard is slimmer then the standard M4 handguard and will fit with the round or triangle handguard caps.
Three reasons I like the Magpul slim handguard is #1 it’s slim. #2 it gives you right at two more inches of handguard #3 the front of the handguard covers the bottom of the front sight base. If you ever burned your hand on a front sight base, you never forget about it.
For a swivel you just mount a sling mount on the handguard, left, right, or bottom. This one is mounted on the left side.

But when it comes right down to it, there are many options out there, you just need to find the one you like the best.

I didn't find this to be the case, either with the standard MOE or the SL. The SL was used on a piston operated unit (Adams Arms) and had to replace triangle cap with a round and notch it out for the piston rod linkage. Standard MOE was used on an AR10 and did not fit until a round cap was installed. Never tried rotating the triangular (point down), maybe that's how it can fit, but then the hole for the gas tube wouldn't be in the right place.

After trying a few fat ones first I also landed on the slim rails. All of mine have these same ones. I even bought two more for extras.
