Today's my 5th ever session with gun in my life and it happened.
A shell flew over my head and into the collar of my shirt.
Hurt really bad and immediately Florida guy shooting his son flashed in my brain and I first dropped (put very quickly) the gun on the table before pulling my shirt away.
It's hurting in few places but can only see one red spot on my back now.
Looks like I need to button up when shooting.

BTW, great grouping today (for me anyways) at 5 and 7 yards, total 25 rounds.

Handgun brass??? Didn't know that was a thing. Try prone rapid fire in a John C Garand Match with 3 down the collar of the shooting coat. Only time I've ever crossfired in a rapid string. I have several permanent brands on my back resembling a 30-06 case, and one that's a bit shorter. The K-31 just tosses them up and over your head.

Welcome to the Brotherhood! Happens to all of us eventually if you’re shooting bottom feeders much, kinda like laying down a motorcycle - it ain’t if, it’s when.

It’s not a rookie thing either - my wife has a beautiful little 22LR case shaped brand right at the top of her buttcheek from a errant case which ejected from my 10/22 into the waistband of her low-rise jeans. We’d only been dating a few months at the time, so I figured I’d better make a lasting impression somehow!

Your story reminded me of a time I as in an M113 Personnel carrier. The M-60 gunner was standing at the hatch directly above us

He opened up and we were getting pelted with all the hot brass coming out of it.

I was the operator (driver) of one of those 113's. There was a Browning M-2 .50 cal mounted just above me, over my right shoulder.

I don't remember ever getting hit with brass from that 50, but I do remember that the entire 13+ ton APC shook when that thing opened up.

Good times.

I had a pretty good 45 acp burn on my collar bone. Happens periodically. Expect it and you’ll never be surprised.

It's one heck of a club to be in.
Worst burn was when I got showered by .22lr from the next position over and took three down the front of my shirt.

Hardest to remedy was being AG on an M-60 and taking a 7.62nato case just under the collar, wedged against flak vest.

Most memorable was when a buxom redhead was a couple positions down using an isosceles hold on a 9mm. Out of the corner of my eye, she jumps up and doffs top and brazier to free herself of a very rude hot case. I pointedly looked the other way (offending an armed, burnt, redhead not being a smart move). Fished in the IFAK and asked if burn ointment would be wanted once al lthe dust had settled and the colorful language abated a bit..

A friend of mine told me his Sister-in-law was firing an M1911 and an ejected case went down the front of her blouse and burned her assets.

I thought about that, calculated the various angles and distances and said, "My congratulations to your brother!!"

I had my 12 year old grandson out at the range years ago while I was firing my 1911. He was behind the firing line with ear & eye protection. He though he'd try and catch my empty's, finally caught one and diden't take long to let it go HAHAHA. Not a burn but somewhat painful anyway. Today he's 21 years old and can put me to shame shooting that 1911 !!!. We still laugh about that day. hdbiker

Years ago before I got my own range at home someone walked up to the shooting table behind me at a public range and proceeded to empty a whole mag of 9mm holding the gun sideways gangsta style. About half of them went down the back of my shirt.

Good job not freaking out and dropping the gun.
Nice group, too.
Hint Baseball cap turned backwards.

True.
Loved the 60, and ouch on the flak vest doing direct pressure.
Good point on the redheads.

It was a blazing hot summer day, and it was one lousy .22LR casing...

A buddy and I were shooting at a fence-line of a friend's farm. He was shooting a 10/22, and a casing from his rifle went into the open collar of my polo shirt and bounced down my torso.

It left scorch marks down my body, culminating in a .22 casing-shaped scar that lasted for decades... o_O

I made a point of shooting on his left after that...

.

Wait until you have some hot brass from a suppressed gun land in your shirt. I don’t normally like to dance, but I was shuffling that day

Been there, done that. Took one in the back of my neck during a timed segment for CHP qualification. I bored down and finished my string before I did anything about it so as to not spoil my score. Definately left a mark on a tender spot.

Awwwww your first brass hickey. They grow up so fast. :)

Won’t be your last. Just always be aware you have a loaded weapon. Don’t jump around like a lunatic until you calmly put the gun down facing a safe direction and then jump around like a lunatic.

Worst one I ever got was a piece of brass bounced off a wall and found its way between my glasses and eye. Eye lids HURT when burned.

Got rained on once by brass from a Cobra mini-gun in Nam. I don't remember it being hot but there was a bunch of it.

Between the leech bites, gook sores, wait-a-minute festers, Swamp ass, and other assorted misery, I’m surprised you gave it any notice ;-)

Welcome to the club and congratulations. Welcome, because every shooter does The Hot Brass Dance sooner or later. Congratulations because every shooter needs to learn to safely put the gun down before doing THBD.

Always have to beware of others doing the hot brass dance. At a range I used to frequent a young couple were shooting semi-auto pistols when the female caught a piece of hot brass and started to dance with pistol in hand, male was shot in the ankle by the female. Closed the range for the day while sheriff deputies did the investigation.

I sold a buddy of mine a 9mm Tokarev that ejected brass flat to the right about as fast as the bullet coming out of the gun. I was shooting with him at the range when he first got it. Of course I was to his right.

It hit me in the ear (I was just wearing plugs), burned it. Then it rolled down my tucked in shirt and stopped around my bellybutton.
