it was a nice day here today so I pulled out the crew and worked on my slow aimed fire from 25 yards, not going to win any competitions but at least I didn't totally suck today

I think if i would have been able to put 3 10 round mags through each pistol while just working for each shot they would have been chewed up much like the P07 target, It was interesting rocking them all back to back like that though, the Sigs feel best in my hands with me favoring the 229 the most, the USP is just a beast of a pistol and as long as i do my job it makes me look better than I am, and even though I just got 7 on paper today with the 40B it is in no way a slouch or lacking in anything to the Sigs or HK....all in all it was a good day of making some joyful noises

Sounds like you had a fun day at the range. Thanks for the "matter of fact" report on how each handgun performed.

You certainly do well with the USP, nice tight group !

I almost never shoot my carry pistols at 25 yards. I doubt I will ever encounter a threat I could legally identify as a threat at 25 yards. I'm not suggesting everyone adopt that philosophy, just stating why I rarely practice at 25 yards.

The problem is when a fella starts with a measured distance in mind. It's an abstraction.

How far is it from the front of your house or apartment to the back? If you live in an apartment, how far from the front door to the closest stairs. How long the hallway?

How far is two car lengths? How far is the sidewalk in front of where you are to the sidewalk across the street? How far from one parking lane in a lot to the next one across?

How far is the table you sit at in the restaurant to the front or rear door? To the rest room door?

Point is to consider the distances in your daily life. Could you make that shot if needed?

That also misses the main point of shooting as well though, it's fun. It's a challenge to shoot at 25 and 50 yards. It's fun. It's a test of skill.

Groups really spread out at 25 yards , I'm a fair marksman practice trigger and grip alot usually stay around 10 yards or so. Glad you had a good time shooting and nice pistols!

Why do so many people assume handgun shooting is for defensive purposes only. I've enjoyed numerous hours over several decades shooting at 25 to 100 yards with a handgun although mostly 25 and 50. Just because one person likes to shoot a handgun at only 10 yards doesn't mean that is the norm.

I shoot at 25 yards most of the time. The target only comes closer for faster shooting.

With open sights only? On most of my guns the front sight covers a 6" gong at 25 yards.

Yep, open sights. The only pistol I own that I don't shoot that far with is my LCR.... because I'll miss more than I'll hit. That gun and I just don't get along so well.

If you can hit that 6" gong at 25 yards, that translates to 12" at 50 yards. And anything closer is pretty easy. Speed is a different matter, but being accurate is never bad.

It is fun to shoot different firearms but each one is different. My thoughts are pick one and practice with it only. Your scores will improve as you and the piece get used to each other.

That looks like a great time shooting! Certainly nothing to feel bad about there.

Good shooting with the USP too. Don't ever think about getting rid of that one.

I always get a kick out of the people who tell me I'm wasting my time shooting a handgun further than 10 yards or so. I usually just tell them not everything with a handgun has to be about self-defense. Having fun is perfectly OK too.

So you’re making excuses for mediocrity. Whatever man, not hurting me if you can’t hit out to 25 yards with a pistol.

I’ll continue to routinely practice out to 50 yards with my carry gun.

Then consider point shooting practice at closer defensive distances so you can shoot accurate and fast - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-help-me-speed-up.824618/page-4#post-10902245

And work up to things like these - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...defense-situation-video.849479/#post-11091007

I think it's good to practice at longer distances

I’ll continue to routinely practice out to 50 yards with my carry gun.

If the range I frequent went out to 50 yards, I'd be doing the same. Because although many consider that distance to be rifle territory, I don't know anyone who carries a rifle as their EDC. Best to be capable with the gun you have with you.

Exactly.

Shooting the longer distances refines skill, and builds confidence at a minimum.

It might also just come in handy if you need to make your sidearm work at distances you didn’t think you’d need it for:

I love those days! Those are the ones when you're really into shooting. I usually don't realize it until I'm on my way home.

I test all of my defensive pistols at 25yds and if they can't get 3" or better 5-shot groups with a rest, then I find one that can. My Glocks with do 1.5" or better. My XDS will do 1 5/8", and my primary carry gun is a S&W M&P40c that barely made the cut.

Then I shoot the snot out of them on reactive targets and practice draw and fire drills from concealment. I am confident in my abilities to engage threats from 3' to 25yds.

While most defensive shootings are still up close and personal, the increase in church shootings and other active shooter scenarios in which targets are much further away, to me, necessitates being competent at longer distances.

You can argue that if the shooter is that far away, then you can escape. As former military and law enforcement, I couldn't live with myself if I had the ability to stop more casualties and ran away instead. YMMV.
