Thinking about a second carry gun.

Sorry on advanced for the long winded post. Here it goes :

My current and only CCW is a 3"Smith and Wesson model 60-15. I love the gun, but the other night I was dry firing it a bunch (with snap caps) to help break in the new rebound spring and make sure it was functioning ok with the new setup. I did it while I watched TV for half an hour or so. Anyways the front sight pin walked out on me and vanished into Oblivion during the dry fire session . I got a replacement pin Within 2 days (now it's a roll pin instead of a solid pin,she ain't going no where!). I HATED being without my CCW, even for a couple days. I have other guns for home defense and what not, but it made me realize I need to get a second CCW because crap happens. It's good to be prepared, and besides it's a reason for a new gun :). I think it would be a good idea to have at least one 9mm at my disposal. Even though I MUCH prefer revolvers, I need to suck it up and put in the trigger time in with the bottom feeders, they just have too many good things going for them to not be using them as a ccw. I have two guns that I'm selling off ,one is going to a good friend when he gets cash together and the other is listed on arms list. As soon as one sells I'm going to pick up a second CCW.

Here is my criteria/thoughts

-g19 or smaller size
-I live in a 10 round state
-Under 600 bucks
-thinking a double stack sub compact would be the best fit.
-easily concealed
-reliability is a must
-night sights a plus, but not mandatory
-had a cz p01 in the past liked it, but couldn't find a comfortable way to carry it. If it was just a little shorter in the grip like a g26 length and had the option of a mag with pinky extension it would have been perfect
-have carried a full size 1911 a little and found it way to long for my 2:30/3 oclock carry position that I favor, especially driving .



List guns I've been eyeballing on the web for consideration

-Gen 5 g26 (don't like older gens finger grooves)
-cz p10s
-fns-9c
-mp9c
-security 9 compact
-P365
-ppq sc
-sr9c (haven't seen one locally yet)

Of those, ive had the fn compact and a full size sr9.

Both have been traded away, but i do miss thr fn. I was recently in the same situation but decided that i prefer either a micro pocket pistol like a pocket .380 or just stepping up to a 15 round 9mm.

In a ten round state, i would probably look at the fn9c if i had to choose the most concealable with the maximum rounds.

Currently, i juat purchased an fn 509 midsize. Basically a Glock 19 in size. I really like it. You can get 10 round mags for it. However, i am not limited to such. I would probably opt for something more compact if all i could carry was 10. It is nice getting a full grip on the gun, though.

I had a Glock 26, but i shot the mentioned fn compact better even though mine was in .40.

Im on the same thought train.
The mag limit kinda makes it pointless to have a full size gun as a ccw. If I can get into a more concealable gun that holds 10 rounds and put a pink extension on it for a full grip would be the ideal thing. Gives you a gun that will shoot well, is controllable , yet is easy to conceal and is more comfortable than the larger guns.

I would look at things different if I could carry 15 rounds in the mag :(

Try the P365. It comes with a 10 Rd Flush + a 10 Rd with Extension. It has a pretty decent trigger for a stiker. Just make sure it's newer production. I just picked up an April 19 production model (so far so good). I will warn it's going to be snappy at 17 oz unless you use a low recoil round like the Fed Micro HST 150. If you choose to go that route the 147 gr "Chubbies" by Stand 1 Armory make good practice ammo. They are loaded light to just make minimum power factor. Both rounds have cycled mine fine.. My Fed 135 gr+P will get your attention.

As always if you can rent at a local range I highly suggest it before a big purchase. Some people are not bothered by firing a .357 Scandium J-Frame and others are bothered be a mid-size .40. Guns that don't bother some at all, chew others hands up. If you have been firing the FBI load out or a M60 and the pistol fits you I doubt you will be overly bothered.

Have you shot the sig p938 at all? My brother has one for his ccw. I was rather impressed of how it handles for such a little bugger. It was snappy,but controllable. Just wondering how the 365 feels compared to that.

That's a pretty good list, but I'd add the Smith and Wesson Shield. I have one of those, and it has completely replaced a perfectly good Gen 4 G19 for EDC. Lighter, feels better in the hand, 8+1 rounds (in 9mm), and not so much as a hiccup in the few hundred rounds I've put through it.

I added the shield to my list thanks, I seem to always forget about it.:thumbup:
 
The SR9c is the only one I've had from your list. Good gun, highly recommended. I handled a security 9, feels good, just seems a little chunky for what it is. The 365 I've heard equal amounts of praise and vitriol due to early production problems. Overall, the SR9c is fantastic for your application

Might also want to consider something like a Kahr CM9 (6+1), or a CT9 (8+1), for your alternative CCW. The one thing I like about my CM9, besides the fact that it's so small, lightweight, and easy to conceal, is that it's smooth and even double action trigger is much like the double action trigger on my CCW revolvers, a S&W Model 649 and a Model 638.

I would also recommend the Ruger SR9c as a very good choice in a 9mm. Great trigger, sights, and overall ergonomics all add up to a solid performer as a CCW.

I carry a Glock 26 daily and (big surprise) I like it. BUT I carry it with a 12 round magazine which gives it almost the same grip length as my Glock 19.

I don't really have a problem with the 2 finger grip you get with the flush fit 10-round magazines but I don't know if I would recommend just buying one without trying it and seeing how that group works out for you.

Of the rest of your list I've also owned a 9C and I owned a Shield between the two I chose the 9C because of the greater capacity. I don't know anything about 9C 10-round magazines if they're reliable I would pick that one over the shield.

I will probably never buy a Glock 48 because it doesn't fill a niche that my glock 26 doesn't already fill. However, in your situation I think it would be worth a look because it's standard magazine meets your capacity restrictions. Which means you don't have to worry about some of the issues that people have had with some of the Glock magazines that had to be cut to 10 rounds for California's ban.
 
Bought my wife a 9c 1.0 when we lived in MA, came with 10 round mags due to state state restrictions. Have not had a failure at all and it actually out groups the 9fs we have. They come stock with 12 rounders in the free states, and also will accept the full size 17rd mags. My hands are large and the grip with the pinky extension magazine fits great in my hand.

I think the new 2.0 is larger than the old. More like the g19. Not sure though. Good luck in your search.

I don't use the sights on my carry gun. I've learned to point and shoot. I personally don't like to have two different types of carry gun to rotate between. Don' want to have to think about what I'm carrying in a very high stress situation. I carry only one type of gun and train every week with it.

I think you're right in regards to size. I've watched a couple you tube videos on them and the 2.0 is definitely bigger. How was the trigger on yours? That seems to be people's biggest complaint.

I have the 4" barrel version of the 2.0 and it's a really nice gun. Trigger has a little more take-up than I'd maybe like ideally but overall it's great. Light, crisp and nice reset. The 2.0 is just a hair heavier than a Glock 19 but the dimensions are about identical. To me it's a little big to carry daily and if I were in a 10 round state like you I might look towards a Glock 48 or the 4" PC Shield instead. That way you get thin for carrying but don't sacrifice the longer barrel and sight radius, and the more limited round count doesn't matter to you.
 
I’ll second the motion to take a look at the Kahr lineup, especially with your preference for revolvers. The trigger is very similar to a DA revolvers pull, and a nice one at that. Heavy but smooth. They conceal pretty easily since they are thin, and my CM9 was quite accurate for a little bugger. The CW allows for all of your fingers, or if you prefer all metal the K series are quite nice looking.

I almost bought a two tone k9 ( think that's the model,it was the all steel one) and the gun store near my dad's camp last summer. That thing was a really sweet feeling gun in the hand. Little heavy for a little guy but it was nice. IIRC it was about 450 bucks. But had other financial obligations at the time. I will have to check out the kahrs again.

I think you should look at the CZ 2075 Rami.
 
Trigger is not bad, it seemed a little rough when I got it, but didn't notice it being bad when shooting. Now it seems fine. Better than the DA on a GP100, not as good as my 1911. The trigger being bad is a joke. Seems like it is bad for people looking for the 3lb glass rod. I guess I am not a trigger snob.

Why not another revolver since you're familiar with that set up?
Otherwise, I can't say enough good things about my Sig P365s - (I bought a second)

My lgs does have a used 3" sp101 ive been eye balling. And it might just fit I'm my 3" model 60 holsters :uhoh:. Also the 3" lcrx in .357 has got my attention.

However I will say this. The other day my woman and I went to the movies to see the new avengers flick. While sitting there during the preview s thought to my self ,man this place is packed, what if some wing nut pulled a stunt and wanted to shoot up the place , would the 5 shots in my model 60 and it's black on black sights be enough to protect her ,my unborn child and myself? Probably. But some low light sights ,5 more rounds and another 10 in the pocket or on the belt sure would make me feel alot better about the situation. Even though getting out of Dodge would be the first thing to try. I know chances of that are slim to none, but it isnt the reason why we carry to protect ourselves and the ones we care about?
 
Then look seriously at the Sig 365 - it is the size of the Kahr with greater capacity; smaller and thinner than the Glock 26
I have all three sizes of Glocks, the Kahr etc. and most will be going bye bye with the 365 at home and on me - plus it comes with night sights already installed.

Yea it does appear to be the Goldilocks of compact carry guns. Even that new XL version is pretty dang appealing. When I swing into my LGS to pick up my single six from repair this week I'ma have a whole lotta guns to fondle.
