6.5 Grendel in 12" Contender

Thinking about having a barrel made.
Anybody shot one?
Idea is for yotes and deer.

I’ve been toying with the idea of picking up one of the Howa Mini actions from Brownells and making a 12” specialty bolt pistol. Same idea. I think the little Grendel would make a dandy specialty pistol.

I like the idea of the contender. If its got a long enough throat you MIGHT even be able to use 140s at reasonable velocity, and it should shine with the regular 120 class. My only concern is if you could get any extra performance out of the larger case as compared to a 6.5TCU, simply because of the increased thrust of the grendels larger dia.

A howa Mini heavy barrel chopped short, and done up with a pistol stock would all kindsa awesome I think. Probably a lot more practical than a full size short action cartridge. Ive never had a grendel with a barrel shorter than 20"s, but from all Ive read it would do ok in the shorter tube.

I dont care for the G2's looks. My dad however does. To each his own. Somebody used to make .300 Savage bbls for the old Contenders but stopped. Still see one from time to time

An Encore in a Grendel would be awesome!!
The old 7mm tcu is very accurate , the Grendel should have about the same volume of powder should be a great round from a 12
Inch barrel.

There was a good deal on an Encore at my LGS.
I let it go.........the frame just doesn't feel good to me.
If I go Grendel, it'll be in an AR15.
Might do one for my daughter (be her deer rifle).

I'll have to just keep my old Contender in .35 rem, in handgun form.
Already have a .35 rem rifle (old 760).

Contender in 6.5 Grendel (you'll want enough barrel to get the velocity you're going after) This one is 17" by Coyote Guns & Accessories
Grendel and Herrett sm.jpg The forearm was in the finishing process.

sorry, been huntin' since urban archery started
The Grendel Bbl Shoots MOA
That 6.5mm barrel is my go-to and taken most of the game lately.
Nothing has left after one shot yet. Two whitetail and one turkey to it's credit.
Shootin' heavy 140 gr. with IMR 4198. Loaded from RP 7.62 brass formed in FL die

If you get an Encore, Don't worry about the Grendel, get a 6.5x55 and you'll be able to outshoot ANY Grendel.
If you want the AR in 6.5, here's one for ya: build in progress
6.5 build w stainless forearm in progress.jpg custom stainless forearm (yes, too dang heavy)

Well, not exactly, but I designed it and had ex-brother-in-law weld a piece of pipe to a jam nut and use it as such.
Really tames down the muzzle flip, tho.
Was imitating the Les Baer Ultimate Varminter.
Shown here draped in vinyl (yeah, I do graphics)

Bullberry will not do it even with a G-2.
You can also do the 224 Valkyrie in the G-2. I have one of those on order from MGM currently.
Trying to make up my mind between the Grendal and the Valkyrie...Went with the VALK, as I have plenty of 6.5's to hunt big game with.

The Valkyrie is a dynamic step for the 22's using the 6.8 SPC case but the newest candidate for consideration has got to be the 350 Legend!
I just really prefer a rim and shoulder for a break-actions and I'm definitely married to the contender.

From my research on the Contender versions its all about max pressure. Not sure on the Grendel cartridge but I would assume a G2 or Encore would be able to handle it with no problems. MGM ( Match Grade Machine) has both 6.5 TCU and 6.5 Grendel for Encore and G2. They list the 6.5x55 and 6.5 x 55 improved for Encore only. https://matchgrademachine.com/chambers-list/#65mm I just recently got a G1 Contender with three barrels. I am really liking the 35 Remington I did make the forearm for it out of a piece of Mesquite.

I’d like to see that .35 Rem

I think the forearm came out pretty well for it being the first time I have ever tried making one. I have a 22mag barrel and a 357mag with a factory forearm. I am hoping to do some hunting with the 35 Rem later this year. I chronographed two Hornady FTX Leverevollition rounds at 2015fps and 2067fps. Out of it. I had some vintage Winchester silver tips that chronod around 1700fps.
