Sig P365XL

Your experiences mirror mine with the Shield the pointedish thin backstrap seemed to want to move around in my hand. Liked the Shield, very well built and balanced just didn’t fit for me. Went to my CZ PCR which I love but would like to shave some weight off it for summertime carry, hence looking for a polymer striker option that isn’t too thick but not as thin as the majority of the single stacks out there.

I get why people are confused as to why someone would be excited about this, and understand the comments. But for me it seems to be the carry piece I’ve been waiting for. I have a feeling other manufacturers will come out with similar offerings once they figure out the design of the Sig magazine for their platforms.

Glock will have to ditch the polymer casing on their magazines and replace the mag release to compete at that capacity and thickness I think. Other manufacturers should have an easier time with such an endeavor.

While I think the Sig 365 is a great gun, I do not see other Firearm manufacturers jumping on the band wagon of redesigning all their micro 9mm's just to add a few more rounds. I know Sig 365 fans are big into these extra rounds, and it is hard for them to understand that it is not of importance, desired or even wanted by many. I personally do not want the extra weight, or a double stack magazine. I prefer a single stack. I remember when members of my club tested the 365 none of the shooters testing the gun were very excited about the 10 round magazine (all were very experienced shooters). It was not even mentioned very much. They were focused on how well the gun shot. And to this date, I would say 6 months ago, only one of us bought the 365 and that was a female shooter that liked the smaller grip.
If I do want to carry more rounds in a firearm, then I will go with a sub-compact which I feel or better sized for double stack magazines. I hope other manufactures leave their Micro 9's alone. Don't want extra rounds. I saw that the Sig 365 is coming out with a 15 round magazine. That should make them very happy. Me, not at all interested.
I know I will get flamed for what I just said, but just being honest. And Please, I am NOT disparaging the Sig 365. Although I do believe they should come out with another size grip for those like myself that just did not like the fact that there was just too much potential to ride the slide. Maybe then, I would be more receptive toward the gun. And if they do, keep the weight down. Do not go over the weight it already is.

I don’t think there is going to be a micro redesign. I do think the subcompacts for other manufacturers are going to have to keep up on magazine round count. I would agree the manufacturers need to keep the size and weight down on the micro sized firearms as they are the options for pocket/discreet carry where concealment, size and weight are most important.

IMHO, the subcompact category of CCW firearms is the hottest market, and I think I’m not in the minority when I say, I’ll take a little extra weight and minor changes (within reason, don’t want incrementalism creeping in and end up too big) in size for 25-50% more rounds onboard (depending on what magazine). That is what the P365 has done to the Shield, Glock 43, Walther PPS/PPS M2, Kahr CM/PM9, etc.

It's interesting that some do not care for the extra rounds in the magazine. I was shooting my 365 along with my Sig P938 and found it very nice that I could continue to shoot after the other gun was empty. Makes it seem like a larger gun in operation but disappears in my pants pocket.

Then I think you will love the 15 round magazine that will be coming out for the 365. .
I always end up buying a lot of mags for all my guns. So at the range, I really do not have a lot of need for a lot or rounds. I like to shoot a full mag, take a break and make any mental adjustments and just load another mag.
But hey, each to his own. If you enjoy continuous shooting that is great.

I wonder if they kept the slide weight down? I had an aluminum framed 5" 1911 I hated because the heavy slide coupled with the lightweight frame made for a lot of muzzle flip.

My experience with 1911s was always that the recoil spring assembly seemed to control felt recoil way more than frame material. I am no 1911 guru, but I do recall that a 3", aluminum-framed Kimber seemed like it had way less recoil than a steel 5" government, and the only reason I could think of that that might be was because of the double recoil spring, full-length guide rod setup versus the GI setup.

Recoil springs main job is to bring the slide back. Make it too strong and it beats things up. It is a balance of keeping the slide from going too fast to the rear and not too fast forward. Other things also contribute to the speed of the slide going back. Firing pin stop geometry and mainspring strength.

For two 5" 1911s with steel slides the spring strength will be the same, but if you have one on an aluminum frame vs a steel frame it will have more muzzle flip.

One of the ways competition 1911s keep muzzle flip down is by lightning the slides by removing material. Same for AR bolt carrier groups.

I think you misunderstood my point in that you mentioned continuous shooting as though I am just blasting away. Far from it.
My sole purpose for owning a 365 is as a pocket carry self defense gun. If I was ever in a life-threatening situation I would much rather have 11 rounds versus six, but that's just me. I do not care nor need to endlessly run rounds through small pistols. I would not be interested in a larger magazine than the 12 round one. But as you say, each to his own. Once I determine that the particular firearm is reliable I only need to shoot it periodically to make sure it's still reliable.
I like trying to wear out my full-size pistols instead. LOL

Yes, each to his own. But I just enjoy shooting them And I like competing with my self. Am I a better shooter for shooting more often than just to get by? I would say it is just like any Sport. I guess a guy can go to the golf course once a month, and consider himself proficient. But I would put my money on the guy that hits the course often. And if it is not fun, then what is the Point? I shoot a lot, because I love doing it. I know guys that can shoot a heck of a lot better with a 5 round snubbie than some guys that has to have 11 rounds. You need more rounds, get more rounds. I have no problem with that. I figure if you cannot get the job done in a few rounds, 11 rounds is not going to matter.
. Sorry, I will continue to practice with my EDC guns at least weekly. I am not that good enough to just put them away and seldom shoot them. If you can, then my hat is off to you.
The bottom line, is this. I believe in shooting and training as if your life depended on it. And I do not see why it is difficult to do diligent training anyway. I ran twice a day for almost my whole life except once on Sunday or a day off before a race. It was just a habit and I never would have been worth a hoot without diligent training. No big deal.

When you have been shooting for 45 years, it doesn't take as much to stay proficient.

To stay at the absolute top of your game all the time it takes many, many, more repetitions. I am not willing to do that to be a little bit better when so many other things have to happen first before one second matters. Situational awareness, mindset, willingness and ability to not hesitate (Because criminals will not hesitate)...etc. My choice. It's a 99% chance I will not be going against Miculek or Leatham, just some crook who probably shoots once or twice a year and usually can't hit squat. I need to be aware, willing, and competent more than anything else. For those of you who are putting in tens of 1000's of rounds a year downrange to get ready, hats off, but please don't get killed by some punk you don't see coming.

Simply not freaking out when the stuff goes wrong is 99% of it. The just execute what you know how to do, put a round on target quickly and accurately.

If one can find the time to practice weekly, they should.

My old Running coach as a kid told me once. The key to being good is "Frequent Moderate Workouts". I am fortunate that I have memberships to three ranges. Two indoor ranges, one a mile to the north and one a mile to the South from my home. And one out door range out of town. So it is easy for me to hit a range a few times a week if only for one box of ammo. Training sessions, are not long, or grueling, just enough to keep honed. The outdoor range is a day for just a lot of fun. Make a day out of it. Bring pistols, rifles etc. Lot of steel plate shooting. Usually once a month. I also shoot a lot of Pellet and BB guns at home in my back yard.
It might sound like a lot, but not really. I try to make it SIMPLE. Mostly just making it a habit, getting off my butt and out the door.

I shoot mostly small barrel guns, and the goal is always to hone my point and shoot skills. And to reduce cost and just have fun, these two little guns have been a blessing. I keep one in the Car and a few boxes of ammo.
Actually one of the best investment I every made. And not a big investment in cash at that.

Just realized this thread as gotten off topic from the Op's original post. Sorry. Will try and bring it back.

The more I see the Pics and spec of the 365xl, the more I like it and the more it makes sense. Not as a pocket gun, but the next step up. Better than most subcompacts due to the light weight and size. And to me, the sub compact is a different animal. While I do not care for a large round count in a Micro 9, I would like the higher round count in a Sub. I would really like to shoot this gun and try it out. At 20 oz it is really nice.

We know that Ruger used the Keltec in the design of the LCP. And I have always wondered if Sig did the same with the 365? Regardless, It is a interesting comparison. And note the Kel-tec is even lighter. I believe Keltec is discontinued. I wonder if they plan on bringing it back, just make it heavier to reduce recoil. I also think it would nice, to see the Sig 365 in DAO.
Just food for thought.

The p365xl has my interest as well... I’ve often wished that sub compacts had longer slides/barrel and shorter grips. The barrel is the easier part to conceal ( and IMO hides easier than a short barrel carried IWB by lowering its center of mass thereby drawing the back/top tighter into the body) and the longer sight radius and added velocity is more important to me than round count; extended mags can remedy that if desired but the heel of the grip is the hardest to conceal so I’d carry it with the smallest mag inserted and the extended magazines for reloads.
I have yet to shoot any p365 but the one I fondled at the store felt good in my hand.

Innovation and forward thinking is never the problem with Kel-Tec. Now refinement and manufacturing capacity...is another story.

I think Kel-Tec does a lot for the industry in pushing it along past previous conceived notions on platforms. Like you believe, I do also that other companies use innovative products from competitors as a muse for their new designs and Kel-Tec is the most innovative out there.

I just wait until someone else refines the design, which is unfortunate for Kel-Tec, but there is just not much of their stuff that I like the feel or quality of, could be just my perception.

You and I think a lot alike by this post.

I’m not picky....
1. Thin but not too thin
2. Reliable, but not too heavy, and easy to manipulate
3. Good magazine capacity, but not too long of a grip.
4. Good sight length but not high bore axis
5. Accurate but will eat anything
6. Outstanding customer service but aren’t going to need it

I think the P365xl is what I’ve been waiting for, and hope that #6 holds true.

At aprox the same time I heard about the p365xl was when I also became aware that s&w has a 4” version of the shield. Now I have to decide but I’m hoping to get a chance to shoot the p365 (any model) before I make up my mind. I’ve had a standard shield before and just wasn’t that impressed. But with a 4” slide and an apex flat trigger I’m sure my opinion would change.
Sig definitely has the edge as far as size is concerned... and the added capacity is a bonus. If it shoots decently enough it will be hard to say no.

I’ve looked at the 4” PC Shield but I didn’t like the grip on the Shield I had, it was too narrow and pointed on the backstrap for my liking. It took readjusting my grip in between shots too much. I put a hogue grip on it which helped dramatically but defeated the purpose of its thinness. That is a big reason for why this 365xl looks good to me it has the longer barrel, shorter grip that I like and is a little bit wider than the Shield (I think about 0.2” or so).

I agree about the shield feeling TOO thin for it size.. and holding it side by side with my gen1 m&p compact, the shield actually has a slightly larger silhouette than the compact... while holding 5 round less. So it went to the gun show and a sig 1911 came home instead.

I updated the spreadsheet with a few other options. I looks like the one that is a surprise to me dimensionally and capacity is the S&W M&P 9c. Minus being just a little bit wider and heavier than the 365xl it is really quite efficient.

So I was reading about the 365xl today and noticed for the first time that the grip is taller/ longer and isn’t compatible with the standard p365 mags... kinda a turn off for me but then I thought about sigs replaceable grip modules and the short gripped p365 grip modules are readily available for $14.99-19.99 (cheap IMO) as well as custom stippled/ etched modules.
Am just dreaming or is there any reason I couldn’t buy an xl model and replace the grip module with a custom stippled p365 module for a long slide/ short grip setup that I want?

Standard 10 round no, but I have assumed they use the same 12 rounder, is this not correct? I would want my 12 round P-365 XL mags to work in my P-365.

It seems to me the P365xl 12 rounders will work in the P365 but not the other way around with the floor plate on the P365 model magazines; as the have a gap filler and the XL is a flush fitting grip for the 12 rounders. What I bet Sig does is starts to include a magazine gap filler with the P365xl magazines to work with the P365; so alls one has to do is just buy P365xl magazines and use a gap filler for their P365.

What the internet chatter is., is that people expect/think that one can swap for a P365 grip module. They look to be almost identical other than grip length and the extended beaver tail. I’ve already been wanting to buy a P365 grip module as you can pick them up for $15. It would be a nice option for people if they are interchangeable.
