We've been hearing this for some time now that the rate of gun ownership is down in America and that the explanation for the higher sales figures is what they've termed the super gun owner.

Why is this important?

Put yourself for the moment in the place of a staffer for Moms against Guns, Every town for Gun Safety, those groups. A staffer makes a cold call to a known well-heeled liberal. The conversation goes well. He agrees, "Ban every last single one. I'm with you."

Then the clincher. "Then we can count on you for a donation?"

"Well, no. You've lost every major legislative battle on the national level. Most states allow conceal carry where it was banned forty years ago. Before 1992 military look-alike semi-automatic rifles were almost unknown. Now everyone buys them 'just because I still can.' What you're doing is worse than just losing. It's worse than throwing good money after bad."

The staffer counters with "But the country is changing, more guns are owned by fewer people, and the overall rate of gun ownership is down. Our victory is inevitable. With your money, it'll happen faster."

The rich liberal accepts that and kicks in with a check.

We're under attack, and we know it. Are you really going to tell a random caller purporting to work for a polling service how many and what kinds of guns you own? I assume you've fought national registration. Why would you fight the government when it wants to take that information from you and just give it freely to what is likely a hostile source, or worse not a pollster at all, but a creative thief? Do you really want that kind of information in some kind of data base? What if you were up for a promotion at work or had reason to look for a job elsewhere. It might be illegal for someone to go to a database and refuse employment or advancement because you were a gun owner, but if they did, how would you prove it, or even know?

People want guns, even a good many of the liberals who would support any gun control measure still prefer to own personal firearms. How likely are they to spill that to a random pollster?

The incidence of new gun ownership is going to reflect the economy more than it is the political climate, and the sales figures of the manufacturers tend to support this. Explaining this increase in sales by the small number of advanced hobbyists out there is a pipe dream of the anti-gun community.

Say one day, some super-liberal government does win and the ATF comes by to collect mine. I can tell them the boat turned over and l lost the shotgun duck hunting. Because of economic hard times, age, and giving a few away to the next generation I don't have any left. Besides, I'm more interested in fishing. All of that could be true. Doesn't matter.

On the chance, I could have a few hundred buried out back I'm going to have to go to prison. They can't afford to take a chance like that, and they'll need to teach a lesson, set an example. Because I fit the profile of the gun owner. No matter how much I might howl that I voted for Obama or Clinton or McGovern--it wouldn't make any difference. Of course in my case, it would be a lie.

If guns ever are banned in this country, and you mean to stay out of prison, even if you supported the gun banning, you're going to need to pick up a few at the last minute on the black market to have something to turn in to stay in the clear. And don't be hollering, "Innocent until proven guilty." We just trashed the Constitution.

Mossberg .410 bolt action shotgun
Mosin nagant in 7.62×54r
Marlin model 20 in 22LR
And paid $1250 for all of them combined

That's OK. When I was young and poor I had only one. The budget got better with time and hard, determined work.

Which is why I don’t talk to pollsters. I write my representatives instead. We should always be mindful of the attack on all our freedoms. Not just the 2A.

We are seeing victories all over the US. From constitutional carry to courts in predominantly liberal areas overturning cases that have sought to limit our 2A freedoms. Those should be celebrated and those responsible should be praised for their efforts.

Average gun owner in America? Most could not tell you where there gun is even located. I challenge any one. Go to all your friends and ask them what guns they own. They cannot even name them. Here is one great question about CCW mass shooters. They will many times say they own a CCW, but forget the Name of the gun or Manufacture and especially the model. . Some will look in there purse, take minutes to find it, And guess what. they ALL own Ruger LCP's. My God, the power of advertising and marketing.
Yea, most will know what rifle they use, Even though they zeroed the gun 15 years ago. Most will not know the choke in there deer gun, turkey gun etc. Most will buy because the Gun Ads tell them.
I was leaving my indoor range the other day, and the range officer was cleaning a few guns. I provokingly said, hey, nice to clean your gun at work. He replied, "Lol, no these are Customer guns." I said what?" He replied, yes, you would be surprise to see how may people cannot clean their own guns". They pay for us to do this. .

Now, I am thing of setting up my own "Gun Clean" business. Welcome to America. And welcome to the world of Mass Marketing, the Power of Ads and the typical bashing of guns done by these fools on the internet.
And yes I have found that most gun bashing is done by the same fools that cannot even clean their own weapon. My Gosh, the new world of gun ownership.

Naaaàh. When they have gov insurance and the kid or wife needs an operation.....uncle sam will say " ill pick up the tab but only if you turn your guns in". 90% will dump their dozen or so guns. 10grand or less they proly have in their " collection". 50- 500k operation a bargain trade.

Saw enough old ww2, korea and even vietnam vets bring a couple guns in to sell when Obummer was president. What did they say?

The gun cleaning thing.....they dont want the mess or exposure to chemicals

I see people wearing gloves.....purple nitrile......even when shooting now (indoors).

Went through a box of them myself.....but was cleaning a once fired Colt auto that was still dripping red ( small police departments dont have drying racks- lab in big city mandates dried out or they wont accept such evidence ).

Think one range charges 15 to do a basic clean after a session. Really dirty......20 bucks. Thats bore brush and wipe down. Maybe pull slide.

You’re probably right that many gun owners aren’t familiar with their guns enough to clean them effectively, but don’t forget that some people have very little time. With two young kids, a part-time job, and a wife that works 70 hours a week, I have very little time to shoot these days. It’s hard enough for me to squeeze in enough time to go shooting every once in a while, let alone clean my guns as often as I should. I’m pretty darn good at cleaning guns (my father and the Marine Corps infantry taught me well), but if it was convenient and not too expensive I’d pay someone else to clean them for me at this point in my life.

Or maybe do like the KGB guy did to the scientist in Chernobyl (tv series watched last week). Was halfway decent

Don't own any guns, but go shooting some times on a Friday night when we can't think of anything to do but hang out at the mall, go to the movies, or bowling alley. I know enough about guns in that Taurus suck, and Glocks are Supreme. Never shot either one, but my other friend that does not shoot either, told me that he had a friend that knew all about guns said this, so it must be true. He learned a lot about guns from the internet.

Just a couple thoughts:
1. This data isn't necessarily accurate.
2. Many gun owners aren't going to admit to gun ownership.
3. This is also an issue of averaging. Many folks only own one or two guns. Then there are the folks who own dozens, or hundreds. I doubt very many folks own exactly 8 guns. (at least, not for long)

The polls indicated that Trump didn't stand a chance in the election. It is obvious that people are not honest and forthcoming in responding to polls.

About the only thing this thread/poll will reveal is that you can poll a bunch of gun owners about the number of individual firearms they own , and the discussion will wander to the ineptitude of shooters who don't know how to clean their own gun.

That’s a common myth, but it’s not true. The polls were pretty accurate in general, they were just off by a small margin in a few states — in many cases a margin small enough to be within a normal polling margin of error. What was off by a large margin was many pundits’ poor analysis of those polls, leading the public to believe it was far, far, more lopsided than it really was.
