Hunting season opener is near.

They're classified as songbirds thus protected, therefor DEC cannot institute a season on their own. Sportsmen in NY have not organized enough to make it happen in the state legislature.
Huh, I guess that does make sense. I never really pursued them because well, I think they are "pretty" (don't judge me!) lol. :uhoh::D. I feel bad shooting them and only went on one hunt. After seeing the hundreds of them flying around the management areas for them I said holy cow and didn't feel as bad when we took out a couple daily limits.

Too many rattlesnakes, copperheads and such to discourage me from wanting to wander through the woods looking for a deer. And then there are the skeeters, they sound like a Herky Bird coming in for a landing. :)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Skeeters too brutal when squirrel opens.

Used to hunt dove or nuisance geese Sept 1. But my hunting bud moved away yrs ago.

Hunted doves w another bud.....but ever since the F&W areas went non toxic......ive not been happy. Have to let em get closer now and even then.,....not enough dead when they hit.

Love the shooting....not the killing. Sold my dove gun.

Getting soft in my old age
Not soft......wise.
You need a trap gun or sporting Clays gun! I dont feel guilty killing clay birds.....and no feathers to pluck.

Ive killed hundreds of doves. And other small game. Proly wont break 100 on deer.

I am getting soft.

Here you need a general hunting license...a game bird stamp......and a HIP number. F&W areas do a reserve hunt ( draw ). For dove. Lots of no shows.....so several xome to try their luck at " stand by "

Buddy and I usually drawn. Often both of us. We put in, one for each day.

Two days of blasting.....cooking in the sun......having idiots skybusting....,its its too much anymore. Used to be hardcore.....when plots better and could use lead. you had to be innline by 8 am. Now its all computer....you get notification early and just have to show up at 11.

Did not hear any quail behind us this past season. Usually do. Big weed patches near sunflower fields

Bacon wrapped dove breasts make a lot better dinner, though. :D

Not to send this thread off on a tangent, but has anyone tried eating those Eurasian Collared Doves that have become the predominant species of doves around these parts? I shoot them every chance I get, but I’ve never tried eating one.

Idaho still has a Mourning Dove Season in September, but there aren’t many Mourning Doves left in this part of the state. The Eurasian Collared Doves, which is an “invasive species” (that’s why the Fish & Game Department allows us to shoot them year around) have practically taken over.

Anyway, I was just wondering if they are any good to eat. If you’ve never seen any Eurasian Collared Doves, they are a little bigger than Mourning Doves, and their call is different. I used to think they were cross-breeds between pigeons and doves, but I guess I was wrong.

I've shot a few, they arnt real common here. I thought they were good.
honestly I can't tell much of a difference between any of the doves, or pigeons for that matter, when taken from the same area.

Nothing opens here till early September. Spent yesterday mowing trails and getting the cameras ready. Amazing how once a trail is made deer get in the habit of following them. Guess they're no different than humans, I'd much rather walk on a clean path than fight my way through the brambles.

Bow deer, small and some upland game opens here the second weekend in September. Most of the time I wait till the leaves are off the trees and after the first frost to do any of them. Sometimes I get anxious and sit in the tree stand with the bow early on, but the ticks are so thick around here one needs to use repellent, much less the mention of Mosquitoes. It's good to get the dog out early so she's on track when the better part of the season is here, but even then, it doesn't really seem like hunting. Used to be a lot more anxious when I was a pup........
