On a stool, just arms no rest, tripod, or sandbags.

next timeout try to use some kind of rest, a rolled up towel will even work. even if you shoot at 25yard try to hold steady.

This... A small POA is as easy to miss at 25yds as it is at 250yds. I like to initially zero dead-on at 25yds, across the bench with a rest that involves the same seat cushion I rest it on to get the deer... run it 100yds or however long and adjust the far zero after that.

I get so comfortable on the bench I damn near fall asleep.
Not kidding.
Heart rate normal is 90 bpm. Always been like that.
It drops when I'm behind the rifle.

When I used to groundhog hunt..........Id sometimes get a bit wound up.
If so, just close eyes, lay beside rifle, mellow out. Zen like state.
Then get on the gun, scope and kill it.

When I go to the range, I don't go for an hr.
Minimum is half a day (allotted).

I might stay only an hr, or two........but time is given for half a day if need be.
Zero time stress.

80-100 grn. Shoot some of all. Pick the one that provides best performance in your gun.
Not going to be a lot of difference in trajectory of all three. When it comes to best shot placement is paramount thuus what performs best in your gun is answer. I've downed many deer with a 243 using 80 and 90grn. 80 would put 3 on a dime at 100 yards using a 4x scope.

I am going to use 243 or 6mm this year for deer hunting in Upstate New York close to the Pennsylvania border. I will be picking up some projectiles and see what I want to use.

For these calibers do you guys like hollow points, pointed soft points or what?

My shots are often in the woods, between 50 to maybe 80 yards.
Occasionally i might get a field shot out a couple hundred yards.

I use spitzers... jacketed soft-points. Generally, zero at 50yds... dead on at 200.

I have a coupledifferent boxes of bullets up in my gun room. I will buy one more type and then do the ladder loads and see what I like.
I do have a Caldwell Leadsled to shoot from.

For that kind of shooting, Sierra pro hunter all day everyday and only leave em for a bonded bullet.

Another thing you might try... Hornady used to offer a 100gr jacketed RN soft point. If you run across some of those, depending on your rifle, they may also be the ticket for deer out to 80yds.

The short distance and uncomfortable shooting position are likely the issue rather than the gun. 25 yards is under the paralax of most centerfire rifle scopes. Not sure how much magnification you are running, but if the scope is cranked up for shots that close small differences in your form can very well be causing the shot dispersion due to eye placement. Very easy to see if you simply set the rifle on a rest or table and look through the scope without touching the gun. If you are paralax free, the crosshairs will stay centered on the target regardless you moving your head up/down/sideways. Chances are good in the current situation you will see the center float one way or another off target as you change the angle of view through the scope.

Those things are beautiful! I've still got some squirrelled away! I only ran em to 200 yds, but anything they touched sure knew they'd been hit!
