I'm looking for a high-quality 357 Magnum. I once owned the same gun only a stainless 686. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Gun photo is not mine, just for reference.

I grabbed one recently and have to tell you, it is a joy to shoot.
It's a 4" 586.
With 38s it's a kitten and 357 mag is no sweat.
I see myself shooting this one a lot more in the coming future.

If you want it you should get it. Never saw a lot of Model 586s; does make for a nice contrast to all of the stainless Model 686s you see.

I'm looking right now for a 4" 586 pre lock/mim. It's on my bucket list. Most of them around here in good shape go for what a new one costs. My search took a setback recently when I stumbled upon a police trade in Model 64 in very good shape for $300. Now I need to start squirreling some more $$.

Out of the >20 S&W wheel guns I've owned my 4" 686-0 is one of my absolute favorites. Can't go wrong with a 4" pre lock L frame

As much as I love my N's and K's, my 686 is my absolute favorite. They may not be pinned and recessed, but they got everything else "just right."

The only thing that would make an 'L' frame better would be to make a half lug barrel.

I actually like having a bit of extra weight out front with the 4" barrel and a full lug. Plus I think it gives the Model 686 a more substantial look to it. I had a Dan Wesson Pistol Pac with the vent heavy barrel shrouds and liked their appearance as well.

May not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the PC 686 plus is tapered lug, 7 shot, and cut for moon clips. Just sayin.

Well, if we're just posting pics of our 686's too, I'll play along...
The 357 mag isn't my favorite cartridge, I could actually do without it, but the L frame is just a good platform and so well matched with the cartridge it's worth it to me to load for.

I prefer larger bullets, plodding along without alot of blast.
When I want alot of blast without turning up the recoil, I've got some 125gr JHPs over a bunch of H110 for my 357mags.

They're an old set of Russwood's. I'd never heard of them before they came into my possession on that very 686-0.
