Hi guys I am looking to do a 6mm ppc with no neck turn, would a .270 neck be right?

Also I have seen some reasonably priced dies from RCBS and Redding

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/368528/rcbs-2-die-set

I have contacted them twice and received no reply as to what size their die is designed for, I know the expander plug will determine the internal neck dimensions for seating a bullet, but if their neck is getting squeezed down for a 262 I don't want to over work the brass.

Does anyone have experience with 6mm ppc no neck turn and dies to suit?

Thanks

.270" is cutting it pretty close. Neck thickness of Lapua (.220 Russ) runs about .013". And there are lot to lot variations. So allowing only .001" around all sides (=.002" total clearance) I would be thinking about more like .272" or .273" to be safe. Most BR shooters that I know who tried chambering for no-turn necks eventually gave it up because of other problems.

Depends on the brass you are going to use. I have never measured any neck thickness (AFAIR) on 6 PPC cases as I was loading for a .262 necked chamber. I just turned them to fit.

What 6 PPC brass? Converted .220 Russian? Factory 6 PPC? Have some? What do the necks measure with a ball micrometer?

I just read @Offfhand 's post, and assuming he is correct on his .013 (And I am sure he is), I just did some math assuming a .2432 bullet, and agree that .270 would be asking for trouble, tighter than you need, and likely wouldn't make it shoot better cutting it that close anyway.

And I sure wouldn't worry about it if you are going to use standard dies with an expander.

What is the intended purpose?

I have access to a good supply of Sako 6mm ppc brass. So that is what I plan to use.

So probably a .273 neck then.

Intended purpose is 200 yard club level only bench rest shooting as well as some varmint hunting. So not a dedicated bench gun, but an efficient cartridge with the potential to be more accurate than over bore 6mm. I have an action and a 1:13 Twist Krieger barrel so before any steel gets cut I am working through details.

Could you please elaborate on what other problems they had?

Sako made 6ppc no turn neck rifle also 22 ppc. Nosler has data for 6ppc using Sako brass and should be reamer for that brass. I've got Sako rifle 22ppc. 6ppc USA should be name for it.

andym79,
Just throwing this out there for your consideration. I sold my PPC and haven't shot short range BR now in 10yrs or more. But one thing I did was simply buy the prepreped brass all tunred down for the std .262 neck and all ready to go. Back then I think I got it from Ron Hoehn. Don't know if he is still in business or not. But I'm sure somebody still this service.
I have all the neck turners to do the work, but I was more into long range BR at the time and I've spent enough hours doing case prep on long range wildcats that for my PPC, I just bought the prepared stuff and fired it in the "standard" .262 chamber that all BR gunsmiths have reamers for.
It works, I've got some tiny bugholes from that brass. Should work perfectly for you for those club matches.

Just throwing it out there for you consideration is all.

Turns out that I happen to have some SAKO brass and checked it out with a tube mic. The neck wall thickness varied from .0010 to .00125" per case, which is a quite a large span. Before using that brass most BR shooters would turn necks down to at least .0010" and chamber accordingly. So why not go ahead and turn to .008" so it will work well in .262" chamber neck, which is more or less a standard dimension for the 6PPC? And here is another "why not" to consider: If you have a large supply of Sako 6PPC American brass, say several boxes, why not sell the whole lot to someone who has a Sako 6PPC American rifle and will be glad to have it. Seeing as how it is no longer available and may fetch a pretty good price. Also keep in mind that the dimensions of 6PPC American is somewhat different from the 6PPC specs most often used in the BR game.. BTW, my old shooting pal, Ron Hoehn passed away last year, so his prepped cases are no longer available.

I had not heard that Ron passed away. Sorry to hear that. I think I still have some of that large lot of brass here somewhere. Just no rifle to shoot it in anymore.

The date on that announcement is 2007 and the brass was expensive then. I wonder what the price would be today if it were available?

Poster has supply Sako brass. The Sako 22ppc factory single shot, I use Norma 22 ppc usa brass. I may be one of the few that still has Sako 220 Russian brass and shoot it.

If you haven’t chambered a rifle yet, another of the “things to consider” is a straight 6BR. A lot of no turn necks shooting really small in short rage BR

Plus, a good supply of quality brass from Lapua and rumors of other brass makers coming on line soon

Yere I may well just go for the 6br as it gives up little to the 6ppc.

Though I have been doing some research on neck turning and it doesn't seem as bad as I thought.

I like the size of the ppc grendel and 7.62x39 real efficient cartridges, though to an extent so are the brs vs the 308 family.

Was going to also suggest a straight 6BR with no turn chamber also but Nature Boy already suggested it. That is exactly what I would do if it was my decision. Make sure you match your twist rate to the intended bullet weights, and your smith of choice has the capability to throat the chamber to match up to your intended bullet weight also so you maintain good neck tension.

Good luck.
