Hello friends, welcome to the AR-15 "type" rifle 10 shot challenge. I was asked in the battle rifle challenge "what about the AR?" Here it is

THE RULES
You will fire 10 shots onto the approved target listed which for this challenge will be a SR-1 100 yd target. Scoring will be scored by adding up the score for all 10 shots. A shot touching a line counts as the next numbering up. For instance if a shot touches the line separating the 7 and 8 the score is a 8. A X counts as 10 points.

If you submitted your rifle in a previous challenge a new target must be submitted for this challenge

You can download the target and make copies online although however I downloaded it on a standard printer paper 8.5 x 11 inch paper from a download link provided below (thanks random) and it comes out the exact same size as a bought SR-1 target as far as bulls eye repair targets. You may use any color target or put a sticker in the center X circle if you want to help aiming as long as it fits correct. Whatever SR-1 target you get it has to have a X ring. Of course you can buy SR-1 targets also the full size will probably be better for the standing freehand classes.
https://bisonballistics.com/downloads/nra-sr-1-target-200-yard-reduced-for-100-yards

I personally get mine from national target company, SR-1 full size and repair center targets.
https://www.nationaltarget.com/

Allowed firearms are as follows...
Any Ar with any length barrel that fires a center fire cartridge like .223, 300 blackout,, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 ect... rim fire is not allowed

There will be four classifications.

Class 1, 10 shots at 100 yds , standing position iron sights only
Class 2, 10 shots at 100 yds, standing position optics or dot sights only
Class 3, 10 shots at 100 yds , iron sights only, benched with front rest or sand bag, bi-pod or prone position which ever way you shoot best (no rear rest allowed rifle must be shouldered)
Class 4, 10 shots at 100 yds, optics or dot sights only, benched with front rest or sand bag, bi-pod or prone position which ever way you shoot best (no rear rests allowed rifle must be shouldered)

Please include with the target submission

username
classification entered class 1, 2 , 3 or 4
score
firearm
ammunition
( if you want you can catalog group size also)

then take a pic of it and post it here, if you would post a pic of the firearm used as well.

You may submit as many targets as you wish provided it was shot with a different firearm. One target submission per firearm is allowed within the class . You can take as many tries that you want BEFORE you post your target but only post the target you want to submit for the final submission to the challenge.

The cutoff date for submissions is September 30 2019

Please submit targets even if you don't think they'll win as the information on how well what shoots may be valuable to other members

Good luck and good shooting

Any questions such as how to post pics or qualifying firearms, or links to possible target downloads please feel free to ask

Let's keep this one AR. However in the future how about a AK vs SKS vs M1 carbine vs MINI 14 or MINI 30? Those paired together in a challenge make for similar pairing in competition.

sounds good to me!

Well I know these is not an official targets, but I thought I might post these unofficially. I can't find any official targets locally and don't have a computer or printer to download any. The first is class 3 open sight from bag. The Second is 50 rounds front and rear bags. Ammo is win white box 55 gr fmjbt shot from psa AR 15. View attachment 855225 100_2655.JPG Colt AR-15A4 with Trijicon ACOG TA31D. The ACOG you have to have sharp eyes because the chevron is small, after updating my prescription lenses i became more clear. If the tip of the chevron is suppose to be 100 yards and the bottom of it 200 yards with not perfect eyes it just looks like a dot forget about focus on top or bottom. It is also harder to see in bright light against certain backgrounds. I'll show my try with Federal bulk pack ammo to did almost as good as with Winchester

I like it but honestly next time I'd go for a power adjustable illuminated scope over a ACOG. I lost a couple outside the 10 ring, my fault. Standing well lol need more practice and less heat outside.

Nice! I admit that I barely qualify as mediocre most days, but I had a second target hung for offhand. I was having equilibrium issues (that's my story and I'm sticking to it), and couldn't even keep the crosshairs on the paper that day. Well, the sun was in my eyes, too. And the wind picked up... Seriously, nice offhand work!

thanks, I only did one try. I'd be happier if I could keep them all in 6 ring or better but I don't practice standing with targets much I use a 8 inch steel gong more for that and it isn't under pressure of scoring. Gonna do iron sights next. I noticed that a optic helps you to see but it doesn't benefit (for me) when standing it is more about timing and muscle control.

Sitting here at 2:30 in the morning - just trying to defeat insomnia.....

What do you think about a match for bolt action MILSURPS?

In the works, message me what ones you have so it can help me put together a challenge, because I have a separate challenge planned based on this vid

and we can do a separate like WW1 and WW2 allied vs Axis challenge , those guns in the vid should be a separate challenge , since most were from neutral countries and most never saw hard use and the Swedish and Swiss are known to dominate in accuracy compared.

Now back to the AR's for now.

well, I put together a reply conversation, but can't find any "send" button - guess I need help

I’ve should have some full size targets next week. Until then, here are a few I shot from the bench on letter size paper.

The rifle is has a 20” 1-7 Saber barrel. I mostly just keep the carry handle on this one, but after shooting with irons, I had a 3-10x40 scope in a mount so I threw that on to get another target.

The shorty (registered SBR) is a 10-1/2” Aero Precision upper with a Weaver 1-3x scope in GG&G QD rings, plus a Troy flip-up rear sight. I did shoot a group with the irons on this gun as well, but I think I’m going to try a few more before I submit one of those.

Ok, this one is a .300BLK built with a 16” Noveske barrel. I was shooting subs with a Bowers VERS-9S with the BLK baffle stack.

I’m not sure what happened. Seems I cranked one out into the 8-ring. Otherwise it would have scored 100.

It was a nice day finally. I brought out the thumper. It’s a 16” BCA .458 SOCOM with an Aimpoint Comp. I was shooting some 350 gr. JHPs at 1550 fps.

And I got my full size targets in, so now I can do some of the standing classes. I usually shoot this thing suppressed, which is nice in that it works like a really long muzzle brake. But shooting offhand would be like shooting a 28" barreled gun. It's a bit much to hold up for long. So I put a smaller brake on and shot it that way.

This is on the same SBR'd lower I had posted above. Just a different upper. I had built this with an 11-1/2" Bushmaster 1:7 heavy barrel, and a NDS A1 upper. It's not a true retro rifle, but I like it.

I'm pretty happy with how well it shoots, considering the front sight is as wide as the black circle of the target at 100 yds. I shot a 94 with some 55gr. FMJ, and then shot the groups below with a 55gr. Midway branded BTHP. They are some of Midway's Dogtown bullets that I'd bought some years ago. They weren't all that expensive, maybe a little more than FMJs, but less than VMAX bullets. But they have shot well I anything I have ever shot them through. I loaded these with 24.0 gr. of H322.

Last set from today.

This is the first AR15 I had built. It’s not much to look at, but it has always shot well. I bought a stripped Armalite “pre-ban” receiver just before the ‘94 assault weapon ban went into effect. For the rest, I had ordered a set from Bushmaster featuring a free floated 16” fluted 1:9 barrel. I added a JP match trigger & hammer as well as an adjustable gas block. The scope is a Leupold VX-II 1-4X.

The benched target below was my third attempt. The first set I shot with some 55gr. FMJ ammo, and those scored a respectable 97. After that I switched to the Dogtown varmint bullets, which produced a 100-1X, with a nice cluster high in the 10-ring, but outside of the X-ring. I adjusted the scope down and was able to shoot the 100-7X shown below. (It was sunny with no wind. I’ll take every advantage I can get).

People talk all the time about shooting sub-MOA, but I find I don’t do it very often. To put that into perspective, the 10-ring on these targets is around 1.3” in diameter. So it’s possible to shoot a perfect score, and still not shoot MOA. My group measured 1.736”.

And the standing classes are really challenging. I have never shot High-Power competition. I really have to give those guys credit. That takes some incredible skill.
