I guess I'm starting it this year! Unfortunately, I missed an opportunity on another one at 400 yards (Couldn't get set up fast enough) just prior to dropping this buck. I shot this California black tail Sat. at 80 yards with a 300 Win mag from a custom rifle built on a Mauser action. Shot placement was as close to perfect as possible. I used a Barnes all copper bullet (as required now in California). He ran about 100 yards downhill, then crashed and slid about another 100 yards. The terrain was too rough and steep to use a 4 wheeler to recover him, so it was almost a vertical climb to the road- my thighs are still feeling it 4 days later. While we were there the other 4 guys I was with also got their bucks, as well as a couple of wild pigs, and an unknown amount of ground squirrels with 22's. We also caught a mess of bass which were all released. It was a great time and a new experience using spot and stalk in terrain very different from what we are used to here in the south.

I have an old set of black tail horns in the shop and, yes, not at all like what a white tail has. The shape, configuration was like a mule deer though.
I remember that the regs stated a fork horn or better on at least one side for a buck to be legal. Nobody would think to shoot a doe back then.

Soooo... it's been a while, busy as heck, but finally found time to spend ten days hunting moose up in Lapland. With results. For once I got lucky, this 18pt fellow walked out from a thicket and stopped less than 40 yards from me. First kill for the Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen, one shot was enough, it staggered some 55 yards and went down. Butchered weight was over 670lbs, I'm glad there was an old logging road nearby. It would've been a tedious field dressing and pack-out job. :)

Wow. Nice bull!
Congrats he, well done.
I've been on one moose hunt. And loved it.

Thanks! This was probably my 40th or so moose hunt since 1987, never shot a moose before (finishing off a wounded moose doesn't count) so it was a genuinely special occasion.
Next combined moose & grouse hunt will be in October. I really don't need or even want to shoot another in a while but the thrill of the hunt and spending a few days in arctic wilderness with hunting buddies is what it's all about. What's not to like.

My hunt was in Ontario. We hauled in more walleye and grouse than we could eat. A moose would have just been a bonus.
Congrats again, that's a lifetime achievement. Well done. I am happy for you. Enjoy.

Great Moose, and choice of caliber! What load did you use?
Thanks! Oddly enough, the load was Remington 200gr Core-Lokt factory load. I haven't gotten around to get dies for the Whelen yet so this was a compromise as there are also roe deer in the area and shooting a capercaillie or black grouse with rifle isn't out of the question either.
The bullet was found under the skin on the other side, nicely mushroomed, having passed through both lungs so the penetration was nothing short of optimal.
(Never mind the blue hue, copper seems to have oxidized slightly when I soaked the flesh off overnight)
