Today I was dropping off a J-frame that I’d finished an action job on at my LGS when I saw a Springfield XD sub-compact in the display case. The price tag said $340, so I checked it out.

It was part of the “Defender” series, a 3” barrel 9mm with a 13 round double-stack mag. I like XDs and have 4 already. My EDC pistol has been an XDs .45 and, after installing a PRP trigger kit, it’s been just fine, but I’ve been thinking about the wisdom of packing a gun that holds only 7 rounds, plus I had some extra $$ from the wheelgun work I’ve done lately.

The gun in the showcase had a truly horrible trigger. Jeff Cooper once described a trigger as feeling like the last turn of the key opening an old-fashioned sardine can and this one was about that bad, except it had more creep! I had the clerk bring out three more and one of them had a really nice trigger; smooth, clean break, etc. That’s the one I bought.

Being retired military, I got 10% off, so with tax it came to a little under $325.

The “Defender” series guns come with just one magazine, but the 16 round mags for my 5” XD Tactical will work for reloads. The gun and one spare mag gives me 30 rounds on hand. I haven’t had a chance to try it out, but all my other XDs have been totally reliable and plenty accurate.

I got one of those about 4 weeks ago here at a lgs for $340. Traded a Taurus 357 Poly protector in. They only gave me $100., the Taurus word chases people away. Anyway I love the gun and the trigger got better the more I shot it. Have since added a 13 and a 16 rd.mag. The gun makes me look good on paper. I've got an XDe also in 9mm. Aside from my g19 that rides in the safe all the time, I think I'm done for quite awhile on hand guns.

My XD and XDm guns have been utterly reliable and accurate. Several have PRP triggers and TFX night sights while I've left others box-stock. Surprisingly, these upgrades feel and look good, but don't make much difference in my times, splits, accuracy, or final scores.

No evidence of the internet-dreaded issues with grip safeties or striker roll pins.

My EDC is an XD compact in 45 acp.

The easiest to shoot of the bunch is a stock XDm competition in 9mm. I've only got about 1500 rounds through it so far, but the trigger, sights, grip, and size/weight just work so well for me.

My first EDC was a Glock 36 that broke in my hands three times. I've been much happier with my Springfields.

I am sort of partial to the original XD (same as the Defender) I have been shooting an XD-40 since 2005. The XD-40 Tactical (top left) has nearly 40,000 rds though it now.

The 100 dollar difference might mean more to others than you, cowbell.
Also, not everyone thinks that the model 2 is an improvement on the original.

I bought a XD9 Sub Compact after renting one at a gun range and putting 100 rounds through it. At $329.00, the Defender is a terrific buy in my opinion. Mine has been GLOCK level of reliability, but feels better in my hand. I liked the XD9 SC so much, I bought another one. The $100 saved was just a bonus.

My XD Mod2 .45 is flawless. I had PRP replace the stock trigger and it’s a nice carry gun.

My daughter is also an XD fan with her XDm 3.8C 9MM. Both guns are great.

I’m mainly a Glock guy, but zero complaints with these guns!

The only difference in the Mod 2 is cosmetic, internals, trigger, etc. all the same. For the $100. you can just get an extra mag and still save money. Some are on a tight budget like myself and don't want all the other mags and junk that are being offered. I don't have a use for 5 mags. I only ever carry one extra. To each his own. But the gun itself is fantastic, great trigger.
