More and more I've been liking the idea of a light, compact 7.62x39 rifle with a red dot scope for deer hunting. I'm in southwest VA and very rarely have occasion to take a shot at over 100 yards, and am much more competent with an aimpoint than a traditional scope where parallax and consistent cheek welds matter - quick, accurate, close range shots are the order of the day when I'm in the woods.

I should note I have hunting setups in .30-06, 7.62x54r, 30-30, and have occasionally carried an m1 carbine into the woods, and I'd like to combine the benefits of all of these into one package. Light, handy, accurate enough, powerful enough without beating me up, and I already shoot 7.62x39 by the boatload.

I have 4 ARs, 2 in pistol configuration with an SBA3 brace, and would likely go this route in a 10.5" barrel for an AR setup. The nice thing about this is I could carry it in my vehicle on my pistol permit for impromptu hunting trips, and it's a much more compact package overall. Both would cost me about the same, both would weigh about the same, both would be similarly accurate, but the Ruger would be a bit more traditional and would be an option for medium-game hunting in states like PA where semis aren't deer legal. This isn't likely to happen again soon, but I have had hunting trips up that way before.

So what say you? Is there an appreciable difference between a 10.5" and 16.25" barrel where 7.62x39 is concerned? Would the Ruger be more accurate than, say, a PSA upper by a huge margin?

I expect a lot of "just get both!" responses, and I probably will.... but which one first? :)

I’d put money, expecting narrow odds, on the Ruger to be notably more precise than the 10.5 PSA. Especially comparing a stocked carbine to a shouldered pistol with a brace.

SBR an AR lower and stick a can out front, I get a lot more interested. I did a 10.5” 6.8SPC for my own midrange deer/pig hunting rig.

Noise is a big factor with short barrel lengths. Id opt for the american, or a longer barreled AR if you hunt without earplugs. I was amazed how loud my American 7.62x39 was the first shot. I drove back to town and bought a $30 linear compensator the same day lol. It seemed to help quite a bit.

Doing some Google-Fu, it looks like you'll get about 2100 FPS from a 10.5" x39, whereas 16" x39s will run in the 2300 FPS neighborhood.

I'd rather have that extra velocity to stay on the safe side and make sure my bullets expand.

That's a good point! I've got krink brakes on my 7.5" and 10.5" .223 ARs and swear by them, the 7.5" was plain obnoxious before. I've got enough hearing damage to avoid shooting without earpro; I've been using electronic earmuffs for a while and they work great in the woods as well as on the range.

With the Americans full size action you can probably push velocity well over 2400 from the Americans 16.5" barrel, as bolt thrust is no longer an issue.

Ruger for sure. You've already got the ballistic equivalent in your 30-30, but the 7.62 would be a lot cheaper to shoot. For a hunting rifle I'd take a bolt or lever over a semi-auto, just a personal preference on my part.

I've got both and enjoy shooting both. I'd give the nod to the Ruger. That 10.5 in., pistol is godawful loud, even with a linear comp. A can would work wonders, but it's still fun to shoot. Better accuracy and MV from the Ruger..

That's a tough call.
My 10.5" AR pistol is my favorite AR. I was planning to build it as a 7.62x39, but #1 son talked me into 5.56. I've not been a big fan of that cartridge. Too small for big game too big for small game.
My vote goes to the ranch rifle. Mine shoots moa with cheap $7/box ammo. 20190301_145316.jpg 20190616_152921.jpg 20190209_155953.jpg

I been shooting deer in the sub 100 yard range with a 16" barrel kalashnikov using cheap Tula 154 grain soft points and it is very effective and devastating on deer with good lung and heart shots. It is accurate enough to make those shots inside of 100 yards. It is not particularly light but it is handy. I have aimpoint comp ML2 on it and lower 1/3 co-witness which has done me well hunting low light conditions as I have a habit of being an afternoon-evening hunter rather that the first man in the stand so the red dot helps. You said you already shoot a ton of x39 so I imagine you might have an SKS or AK. I would just save money for another gun and take those hunting unless you have rules or social stigmas barring that. You can get red dot mount for either of those. But if you are only looking at what you mentioned I would get the Ruger.

I have a WASR with a pk-aV reddot that I've hunted with quite a few times, but it'd be nice to shave 3lbs off and have the same performance in the woods.

I'm a big fan of the AR and the RAR, but not so much the x 39. That's why I'm about to push you out of the box. The Ruger American Ranch in 300 BLK has a 16.5" barrel and fires an effective low-recoiling round. You would have the choice of firing a supersonic softpoint of your choosing, or even suppressing it later if you desire and using something like the Hornady subsonic 190 grain sub-x. I killed a small doe quite cleanly with that last year.

Despite my Howa mini x39 being sub-moa I'd like the .308 bore barrel of the .
300 blk out for bullet selection.

Now depending on performance of the Sierra 150gr .311's my vote may change.

Benifit of the x39 over the 300 Blackout is the x39 will not fit into a 5.56 chamber :what:

keep an eye out for the speer 150s as well, those should be really good at x39 velocities.
I also like the PPU 150btsp, tho I only used them on game out of my 7.7

IMO you might want to try some .308s in your x39s as well, I've shot them from a Mosin and actually had fine accuracy.

Oh I tried some 174smks from my SKS and got good accuracy with those at just under 2k, only had about a dozen left from my mosins, and Ari's tho.

Can’t go wrong with either option in 7.62x39. Its one of my favorite cartridges, especially in an accurate platform.

You must ask yourself:

Do I need the extra velocity of the 6” longer barreled Ruger?

Do I want a semi-auto?

Both platforms are great. It comes down to preferences and use.

Having the ruger american and a ar15 chambered in the 762x39. I would go with the ruger. Makes cleaning the cheap surplus stuff alot easier then the ar15. Both are accurate and reliable.
