any .40 smaller than the kahr pm/cw40?

Hi guys,

Lately I've had the feeling my glock 26 is too large and it got me looking into pocket pistols & mouse guns. I love my G26 but it just doesn't fit in a pocket or under a trouser cuff and I need something to carry in those roles. Love the G26, just not on my ankle or in my pocket!

So, the hunt is on, and while I was originally looking for the minimum dimensions available on a 9mm I wound up looking at every caliber from 32 to 45.

So far I'm confident I've found the smallest 32 (kel tech p-32), smallest 380 (kel tech p3-at), smallest 9mm (Sig 938), but I'm less confident I found the smallest 40 (Kahr CW40 or PM40, same gun basically).

Anyone know of a smaller one or is the Kahr CW40 the smallest? I break ties by Height > Width > Length.

Seecamp is way smaller than P-3AT. Heck, it's smaller than P32. The .380 and .32 ACP versions of Seecamp are made on the same frame.

Also, you meant CM40, not CW40. CW40 is the "medium" sized gun in the triplet.

(no CM380) - CW380 - CT380
CM9 - CW9 - CT9
CM40 - CW40 - CT40
CM45 - CW45 - CT45

For some reason I thought seecamps were old antiques no longer in production, I'll reconsider my planned purchases.

Nothing smaller than the Kahr in 40, though?
 
I would suggest taking the kahr pm40 out for a test drive before buying one. While its size lent itself to pocket carry and its trigger was smooth which helped its shootability, its diminutive size did not help with recoil management. It was a beast to control, so much so that I traded it for a glock 27 and havent looked back.

My suggestion for a pocket gun would be to stick with a .380 or 9mm.
 
The PM40 is the smallest 40 I have ever shot or handled.

IIRC, I bought it because I'd never owned a Kahr, and it was for sale used, in nice condition, dirt-cheap.

The flush magazine does not work with my XXL hands. I bought either an extended mag or a mag extension (I misremember which). The extension basically just gives me a spot for my pinky; it doesn't make the gun much larger.

I like the trigger and sights. The few times I've taken it to the range it's shot well for me. The recoil doesn't bother me at all... as long as I have the mag extension (or extended mag, or w/e it is).

As Bannockburn said, it does have some muzzle flip, but the recoil didn't beat my hands up at all.

How about M&P Shield 40?
  • Kahr PM40: 4.0" x 0.94" x 5.47"
  • Kahr CW40: 4.62" x 0.94" x 6.36"
  • M&P Shield 40: 4.6" x 0.95" x 6.1"
 
I don't have the CM40 but I have the CM9. I wear jeans and I don't pocket carry it because of the squared off rear of the slide. It is very difficult to pull the gun out of a jean pocket. I guess with looser fit pants it would be ok. I carry it iwb which works great. You hardly know the gun is there with no printing. For pocket carry I stick with my LCP II.
 
I have a PM40; yea, it kicks but not any worse than a LCP 380 - IMO.
The Kahr PM40 and PM9 (if the thought of 40 recoil is unappealing) are about the most power that fits in most pockets.
PM9: Federal HST 124 +P @ 1,120 fps / 345# KE
PM9: Corbon 115 +P JHP @ 1,264 fps / 408# KE
PM40: 180 gr. Federal HST - 947 fps / 359# KE
PM40: 155 gr. Federal Bonded @ 1,086 fps / 406# KE
 
I had a CW40 and while it did have a bit of a kick and a lot of muzzle flip with some of the hotter loads, it was still controllable and surprisingly accurate.
 
The PM40 and CM40 are the smallest 40 cals available. I have a CM40 and it quickly became my favorite EDC. Add a Hogue grip sleeve and it will surprise you for such a small.40. I can shoot it all day.
