Man do I wish some of you guys were closer. Been out six times this year so far and only got one boar and saw two others. Probably has a lot to do with I can't hunt early morning but the ones outside my house keep taunting me.

Squirrel hunting is my main drive each year. I never hunt till it cools off that means most years I dont go into the woods until Dec. haha
I have taken to trying to kill them with handguns, more and more.
Have a 17M2 Contender and just got a 17HMR S&W 647,

I haven't huntedxsquirrels much since I moved out of Upstate New Yorkbtwenty years ago.
I am taking my rigjt year old grandson back tjere for a week and a half to take him out squirrel hunting and do some muesum tours. We leave Seattle this comeing Wed. at noon. So thursday earlyvwe will be out hunting in the hickories.
After hunting we are going to stop st Gander up above Syracuse so my brothr can ude up jis $500 certigicste he won snbthe daily numbersvdrawingvfor a gun club. Then we will go to Frank's shooting supply to use the $500 gift certificate I won on thevdsiley number raffle from the Camden Rod & Gun Club.
Then wecwill go spend the night up in Oldvforge and Friday morning go back in thevwoods & see if we can get a grouse or two. The logging muesum will be open until 5pm. We will goto the Buffalo's Head resturaunt in Forestport for prime rib diner on thecway back to my brothers place.
Saturday on we will hit the woods every morning for squirrels.

I will post more on our trip as it develops.

Probably sight in the squirrel rifles tomorrow. My buddy decided a cricket with a 4-32 scope would be a good squirrel rifle so I get to sight that in too. I hate those guns with a passion but he says its accurate and wants to use it. Probably take the GF camping again next month and do some hunting.

Well after telling him it was a terrible idea my buddy decides he is going to invite 15 people he met at a survival gathering to camp and squirrel hunt our best public land spot November 9th. I tried telling him that's generally when the rut starts and its a bad idea but his mentality is its public land F em. I don't like the idea of shooting through the trees or even shooting for that matter while guys are trying to bow hunt.

I wish are season was longer after October 1st i feel bad hunting. We had a few cold days but only 2 this month. I have not even gotten out yet. If I owned my own land then squirrel hunting after now would be fine.

Are deer season ends middle December and with the snow makes it hard to get out.

Our season does not start until OCT 1st.

I took my grandson to a patch of woods yesterday morning. We sat with our backs against a stand of pines and was watching some decent size red oaks and a few shagbark hickories. He shot at a red squirrelnandxa gray squirrel and missed. He got to excited and shot to fast.
We stayed out for a couple of hours then made our way up to Old Forge for our overnight trip. We stayed at the Blue spurce motel. This morning when we got up we took about a thirty mile back woods roads drive on the way to the Blue Mountain Logging Muesum.
He hav fun there, he dind't want to go.there, but once there he didn't want to leave..we spent five house there looking at the displays.
They do have a decent gun disply room.

Tomorrow we will.be going out squirrel hunting again over in Afton NY first thing in the morning with my 2nd son and his son. He is nine years old.
I had to change the scope on my Marlin 22 magnum tonight so i have to sight it in early in the morning before we hit the woods.
Here are a few pictures .

Ya Walton isn't that far from where we are.staying and hunting. How long will you be visting up lin Walton?
There is some decent State Game Land in the north easr Afton -south east Bainbride area I could show you
There is also an extensice amount of state game land over in Masonville.
We hunt alot of state land as well as private land for both small and big game.
Where we hunted Thursday morning we state land over in Mcdoungh. This morning we will be hunting the State land in Afton/Bainbridge. Melody Hill area.
Tomorrow morning probably the skyline state land over in Kirkwood off of Grange Hall Road.
There is state game land I want to squirrel hunt on close to the town of Greene on Wylie Horton Road. We deer hunt there and I see squirrels there quite often.

There are two pieces of property I want to see about gaining acess for deer hunting on. One 60 acre piece that is across the street from where I sit for deer here where my brother is renting in Harpursville and another 30 or so acre piece of property I use to hunt squirrels and deer over twenty years ago over in Ouaquaga.

We will be heading out hunting here in an hour or so. We will be stopping in at the Ninevah Country Store for breakfast pizza.

My grandson is having the time of his life.

I should be here at least till Tuesday, have to see my dad picked me up so he has to drop me back off. Ya I see on the map there a lot of land over there, I looks more scattered them like the near springs here. The spot here is about 9000 acres. I have not hunted it yet but did a drive around looks promising.

I like the smaller state lands. It gives you more of a variety of wood lots to hunt. Where we went this morning was mixed types of oak, some beech nut and a little hemlock.
We seen a big doe there and eight turkeys thrre too.

Good you seen some game. I'll probably come back up a week or so after the start of rifle. Still not positive where I can hunt this year, so may have to use some state land.

Our time here is about done. I got my grandson in on squirrels every day we went and he didn't do to well shooting them. As young as he is he is in to much of a hurry to get a shot off. Atlease he now relizes what it takes to hunt them and will have many stories to talk about for years to come.
Each place I took him to explained what was there that made the spot a good place for squirrels. I showed him to look for the small pieces of hickory nut husk that the squirrels dropped from up in the trees.
I showed him the leaf nest the squirrels make. To look for mature trees with hollows in them where branches broke of years ago and the squiirels use them for shelter.
He got to hear the differemt calls the squirrels make and the calls chipmunks make.
We got to see some deer close up in the woods. It,s been a fun little trip with a bunch of muesum visits shoved in.

The first muesum we went to was the Adirondack Expiereancen the Museum on Blue Mountain.
At first he wasn't to keen on going there. Once there he didn't want to leave. We spent five hours there and didn't get to see everything.
After this muesum we wentbto do the coal.mine tour snd anthricite muesum in Scranton Pennsylvania and the Steamtown Railroad Museum in Scrsnton as well.
There was a Trolly Museum next to the Railroad Museum I didn't know was there whixh was to bad. If I had of known it was there I would of alloted a couple of hours for it.

Friday we will be going yo the Hansford Mills Museum in East Meridith New York. That is a must see museum. It is a mid eighteen hundreds operational water powered saw mill, town electric power, two floor wood shop, grist mill and has an elevator that all ran off the water power.
You get to see the Hanford house as it was in the eighteen hundreds. You can check out their web site.
HANFORD MILLS EAST MERIDETH N.Y.

After Hanford mills we will be going to Howe Caverns for that under ground tour.

Went on the first squirrel hunt of the year last night. We ran the cur dog and shot a huge fox squirrel out. I accidently grazed him with the 22lr and my buddy finished him with the 28ga. We were headed down the ATV trail when the dog treed again and it was a grey way atop a large oak. He offered me a head shot and my Savage Mark II heavy barrel with CCI standards found its mark.
