Must say I’m excited about the new Hellcat. Will probably get one. It’s got me thinking though can these manufacturers use the same ingenuity and give us more capacity in full size standard mags? That’s what I want next, not more micro 9’s. I’d love a gun with a 5” height that holds something like 21 standard rounds. Wishful thinking?

They have over the years. For instance the Beretta 92 was originally a 15 round gun, but now typically ships with 17 round mags in tubes the same length.

Yes, probably wishful thinking as you most likely cannot squeeze that many rounds into that length.

I'm generally in the "no free lunch" camp. I feel squeezing extra rounds in the same space will cause you to give something up, either feed reliability or long term durability.

most magazines don't use all the available space at all from what I've seen. the spring compresses down, and in single stacks, it is like 30-40% of the available space is just for the magazine spring to compress. I was looking at some Ruger Standard mags and noticing how the spring sort of sits off to the side and not directly centered below the follower. If someone was to design a magazine that used a spring stretching instead of a spring compressing, in theory anyways, you could quickly turn 8 round single stack magazines into 12 rounds - or possibly 15 round double stack mags into 20 or 22 round magazines. someone would just need to figure out a new mechanism so the follower can travel all the way to the bottom of the magazine. where is John Browning when you need him … lol so say you have an 8 round single stack magazine, and expand that to 12 by modifying the way the spring and follower work, then turn that into a double stack magazine and pretty quickly you have an 18 round magazine, just by some design changes. It probably would not be that hard to engineer, but would be too expensive to be of any real value - nobody would buy it if it cost twice or three times as much.

I'd love to see Kahr manage this and add a round or two in capacity; I really want a T9, but just don't have that much use for something that only holds 8 rounds in that size.

For what it's worth, John Browning thought those 8 round single stack's should be 7 rounders.

Ramline made magazines with extension springs that unrolled down the side of the tube. It got the Ruger Mk II from 9 to 12 shots. Quality was kind of flimsy. I think there were some centerfire magazines built that way, maybe 9x.45 instead of 7 or 8.

A couple of European developers have gone the other way, make the ammo smaller. They proposed super duper .32s for police and security. I bet you can get a lot of those in a Glock and even more in a STI.

W.H.B. Smith, best known for his books like Small Arms of the World, was also a designer. He had a .22 pistol that would hold a box of ammo without getting too bulky to handle.

I’m betting someone will figure it out. No one would have thought they would get 11 rds in a 4” single stack either. And I say never assume a single attacker, might be a group of thugs so the more rounds the better my odds.

The jury is still out about long term reliability and durability of these newer design magazine/magazine springs. I am very content with a Glock 19 with 15 rounds or a SIG P226 with 18 rounds.

I wasn't aware of anyone managing to get 11 rounds in a 4" single stack. It's a physical impossibility. The rim diameter on the 9mm is .392". 11 of them makes a stack 4.312" tall. Now add in a follower and room for the spring.

When I was trying to figure out why my 8 round mags for my little CZ-70, 32 ACP would sort of nose dive with some ammo after 5 or 6 rounds were installed I ran into a ton on info on .45 ACP and why they should be 7 round mags. It is just the design of the ammo, some friendlier than others to stack in the magazines. I have some ammo for my .32 that is good - cheaper than some other brands, but I really only load mags 5 deep with it, after that the noses start to droop and I just shoot it at the range for practice so - no worries to me, but it was interesting to go on a history lesson and figure out - really, if you have anything running an ACP or semi rimmed cartridge, it will be more reliable with fewer rounds in the magazine - and if you get jams it will probably be the first or 2nd round out of the mag. It was also kind of confusing to figure out why the CZ-70 magazines will easily hold 9 rounds, but they are considered 8 round mags. My guess is after 8, you're pushing your luck on reliability, same reason .45 ACP mags for a 1911 should be 7 rounds.

There are companies that make magazine springs & followers that allow your factory mag to hold more. One is called MagGutsI believe. They make parts for S&W, Kahr, Ruger and others

Maybe single stack wrong words to use. Was referring to the new SA Hellcat which specs show is only 1” wide so puts it in same category as single stack to me for a 9mm

I bought "Maguts" for my Kahr magazines. Adds one round, and has better spring.

I believe it's a staggered magazine. Not quite a single stack, but not as wide as you'd need for a true double stack.
