What do you pay for a place to shoot?

There is a shooting range fairly nearby, has a handgun range, rifle range, and skeet-shooting course. I think it's something like $12 to spend as long as you want (per person) on the pistol and rifle range. It doesn't allow rapid fire (up to the range safety officer as to what constitutes "rapid"), and is strictly static/bulls-eye kinda thing. It's a nice, safe place to sight in a gun, teach a newbie (kids are welcome), etc.

There's another one about equidistant that I haven't visited but I hear it's a bit more open to more advanced drills, and is competitively priced. A friend runs a shooting school about 15 minutes from here but it's not set up just for folks to come shoot. It's a school with classroom/dryfire/live range tactical sort of training (he's a great instructor with a lot of real-world experience). _I_ can go shoot there anytime he's there but it's not a full-time endeavor so it's hit-or-miss (no pun intended) as to whether he's there or not.

Most of my shooting I do at the firing range at my old police dept. I was their "firearms guy" before I retired, even re-wrote their firearms policy. I still have range privileges. It's an outdoor range, surrounded by high berms, and since I'm usually there alone, I can do pretty much any kind of practice I want. Max range there is about 100 yards, but that's more than fine for my purposes. They have Pepper poppers, metal head plates, nice plywood backboards for whatever targets I want to hang, and frequently they have vehicles and/or building materials to shoot. I can take folks there to practice/train but I normally just take one or two as I don't want to over-reach my privileges. As to cost ... It only cost me about 25 years of service.

There is an advantage to living in the sticks.

If i drive to wisconsin (35 minutes to the range, 10 minutes to the border) i can shoot all day for $10- outdoors, 100, 50, 25, 10 & 5 yards at a nice club- no membership required only open sunday dawn to dusk. If i shoot locally its about $15 per hour, indoor out to 50 yards.
There is a private range that opened a mile or so from my house thats indoor, 24 hours a day and nice- it's over $1000 per year and my wife said "eeeeek, no way"- i believe nra membership is required but i forget cause i just stopped looking at it when i knew i couldn't join.
I can shoot on private land 3.5 hours away all i want, but its far.
I could shoot at home when i lived in tennessee but - my mom still lives there but its 11 hours away and my mom does not like guns but she does have a couple and i shoot when im there anyway.

Yeah, i know. My situation isn't unique but i have a 2 year old and a 5 month old so getting to wisconsin on the weekend is tough, the 24 hour range is appealing cause when the house goes quiet about 9pm i could sneak out and shoot an hour or so any night. The struggle is real.

Tell you're going to set up a range in the basement. That $1000 won't seem so much....

My Dad shot .22 pistol in our basement in St. Paul all year round. He had a nice bullet trap he made. That's where I fired my first gun-a Ruger MkI, at 5 years old.

I pay $75 a year. There are eight ranges from pistol to plinking to 500 meter rifle. Also a shotgun range. Initiation fee of $100 paid only once as long as you keep your dues current.

25.00 a year for membership includes trap, skeet, rifle, pistol, plus 5.00 a session on rifle -pistol range for 2 hours, if no one is in line waiting on rifle pistol range no time limit. Completely remodeled, NRA approved rifle - pistol range with range officers on duty or no shooting. 15 minutes from my home. hdbiker

I pay 50 per year. 65 for the first year. 1 300 yd rifle range covered bays they ate building another 300 yd range next to the first. There is 2 pistol ranges to 25 yds a 22 silhouette range, trap and skeet range, archery range, camping area and hiking trails. I can shoot sunrise to sunset and only about 20 drive.

$275 for an annual membership. The indoor range is less than 3 miles from home so it is quite convenient. That applies to the many other shooters in the local area so read that as it can be quite crowded. I've not been there on a weekend nor do I intend to. They are open from 1-10 weekdays, Sat 10-10 and Sun 11-9. 20 bays with 5 being 20 yard distance. 25 yards for the other 15 bays. All bullets must be jacketed/no bare lead, no alum or steel cased ammo, 44mag is the max handgun. They allow up to .223/5.56 rifle but must be their ammo. Shotgun must be their #8 ammo. No rapid fire, no holster draws unless approved.

Used to be a range 3 miles away from the in-laws place so when we were visiting I'd go plinking for 30 minutes or so. I didn't check what annual membership was. Rate was $6 at the time. Only handgun for the public, LEO's had their private side. Which was good for them because the public did not have access. Some intent person targeting LEO's would not be able to approach them. Parking area had lots of marked and unmarked cars. Was a nice range.

$20- Lake City, Michigan. 200yd 100yd 50yd 25ft pistol 7yd. eat your hearts out! Haven't shot skeet or trap yet, but it's there.

That end of my shop is my shop office. It's very well insulated plus it doesn't get very much direct sun light; it stays very cool inside.
