Doe in the freezer.

Well, I was a little skeptical about our private land doe season. I haven't scouted much this year and to complicate things, the land owner knocked me out of my favorite area. He put in a food plot and wants to save it for his son. No biggy. I'll do anything to help the boy. Then he said that they had implanted embryos into their show goats and didn't want any loud noises to upset the nannies. That knocked me out of about half of the farm.

So, today I go down to see about popping a doe and the battery is dead on my ATV. Instead of hiking a mile to the south end of the place Where I have a stand, I just slipped off of the hill and did a sneaky snake away from the goats. I love doing a still hunt when conditions are right and this morning was perfect. I left the truck at 7:00 and had a yearling doe down by 8:00. Hiked back to the truck and , low and behold, the battery on my ATV had warmed up enough to start it. I had to dodge some steep spots but was able to drive all of the way to the deer.

By 10:30 I had her home, skinned and hanging in my storage shed. I love it when a plan comes together.

Not much to tell. I slipped down a rough, steep hill loaded with cedar. Until I hit a road at the bottom that runs by an old abandoned house. I have killed deer from the house when it was raining and there is always tracks in the road there. As I got near the house several deer bailed off the hill. I am guessing that they scented me because the thermals were drifting up the hill. The doe hit small opening in the brush about 60 yards out and stopped, but started walking just as I squeezed it off. She flinched and take off. I was shooting my 300 WSM Savage because it has a 2X7 Leupold. It is my go to gun when the deer are in the timber. There wasn't any blood where she had been but while walking down the trail I saw a bush shaking about 50 yards down the hill. She was dead when I got to her. The 165gr Accubond took her a little far back, but the bullet had really made a mess of her insides. I really don't know how they can take that much punishment and still go.

Went back this afternoon and pulled some sd cards. Had a couple of small bucks, a 3X2 and 3X4. I would take the 7 point if I was anywhere else, but this farm has some good ones. I'll thin does until Mr. Big Stuff shows up.

This place is awesome. 800 acres and it has gobs of deer. The owner got nuisance permits a couple of years and turned me loose. Last year he thought that I had them thinned down enough to manage. I went out the next day to pull stands at two o'clock in the afternoon and I saw 21 head. I don't take bucks unless they are pretty nice or deformed. I have 2 on camera this year that I may cull if I get a chance. We'll see.

I had one in front of me for 25 minutes. It even laid down for about 10 minutes. I could tell that it was young and since it was alone I would bet that it was a button buck. The range was about 150 yards and I had my 300 WSM with a 2X7 on it. This rig is a give me at that range but I let the little fellow go. Had several deer on camera at my feeder with one nice buck. 2 culls, .and a couple spikes. Probably a hlf dozen does in the mix. I'll take the culls if I get a chance next month. Muzzleloader starts next Saturday and I'll miss it. Ginger D wanted to go on a cruise. Hope my camo fits when we get back.
