There are a few ny members here and some others who will be visiting ny to hunt this season. Some of us were having some good conversations in a different thread I this is so we can avoid hijacking that thread.

So since bow/ xbow is about over and regular season starts on the 16th in the southern zone. The northern zone started a few days back.

Some of us have talked about where they hunt, kinda like to make this like a campfire talk. I never went to deer camp but always wanted to go. So what's your hunting story's and how you spend your deer season.

Anyone is welcome to add story's this is just so we can talk.

Thank you for starting this thread. I will check my doe tags and see what areas they are for.
I'm sure a few more people will chime in from the area.
We might get enough guys together to put a couple of drives on.

The American Legion in Hilcrest started their Friday night chicken wing fund raiser if any one is interested in going to it.

It will be fun getting together to go hunting and share hunting spots.

Sounds fun but I am down in Orange county right now. I could go for some chicken. I still did not get my license, money's real tight. But maybe I can get one for a area up there. Or I'll just shoot a doe down here and save the buck tag for up there, unless I see a monster lol.
 
I have two doe tags and my brother has two doe tags and I will see in I can scrounge an extra doe tag or two once I get back there.
If we can get a couple of other guys involved there are some good size wood lots we could still hunt from one road to the road on the other side.
My brother is disabled and can pick us up where we come out. The bigger bucks hang out deep in the woods once the roadside preasure starts.

I use rifle for deer hunting, haven't used a shotgun in a long, long time.
We put up a new meat pole when I was back there in Sept/Oct.
We took the old one down and put the new one up about four foot higher and put three pullys on it to help hoist the deer up. My brother is going to get a winch put on his quad this weekend to hoist the deer up.

is it shotgun that part of ny? Nice deer hang. For years I put them up in the barn at the farm i hunted, but after the owner died land is hard to find. I've never use state land so that will be a learning curve.
 
I just checked my dow tags 7S and 7J.

They just opened the area around Binghamton up for rifle use. I'm sure there are restrictions right next to Binghamton.

Some of the state lands are awesome for hunting and some are just plain set of woods.
There is so much state land around you could hunt a different set of state land all season long.

I will be useing a 243 rifle this year. I have several rifles there that I left there for deer hunting.
I had a guy who owed my some money for a couple of years and gave me a nice Browning 30/06 BAR with two extra new magazines and had a scope on it. I hate that gun, I gave it to one on my kids.

I like bolt action rifles, i did pick up a H&R handi-rifle with a set of barrels. One is 243 and the other is a 308.
I have an old Marlin 336 in 30/30 back there with open sights if it is raining out.

I need to load up some 30/30 bullets to test in it.
We will.be going to the Greene Sportsman Club on the 14th or 15th to shoot the rifles and make sure everything stayed in place.
I need to pick up another dehyderator for making jerky up. I didn't make anywhere enough last deer season.

We process all the deer we harvest and vacum seal the meat before freezing it. It doesn't take up long if they start to stack up.

My grandson is eight, I brought him back there a few weeks ago for squirrel hunting and to take him to a bunch of museums. I think I will bring him back there either next deer season or the ine after so he can go deer hunting with me.

I load down the 357 & 44mag for him.
He can shoot up to 308 rifle as well and hit clay pigeons set up at 85 yards setting at our shooting table.

A friend gave him a 223 AR15, He does good with that as well.
It"s all fun.

Looking at there map Tompkins county is shotgun and a small spot in broome. I use my ruger 7x57 or my Browning abolt 7wsm may bring my cz 7.62x39 out to. I still have to check zero and re sight in my Browning because the scope went out for a check and clean up.

I never hunted state land so never looked where to hunt, there 1500 acres down the road from my house I my have to use opening day. Dad live by the bear springs mountain land.

My dad was the same way, I was shooting before I was in school. He worked at a very popular gun shop so I have shot about everything.

I have not made jerky in a few years mostly because I don't have the stuff here. Dad has what's needed. I do like grinding deer and adding beef fat makes nice burgers. We will make some nice morning sausage with pork fat. I think I like the ground meat the best. So many things can make with it.

Troy you don't need a shotgun you can use muzzle loader or handgun in shot gun areas. If that helps you at all.

As I mentioned in the other thread I have a doe tag for 7p so we're covered in most areas in this region for doe permits. My son in law was having trouble financing his licence this year so I sprang for it. He was denied his doe tags this year, but that isn't too big of a deal. I may be able to bring him out to hunt with us as he wants to see what his 06 will do on deer.

This past Christmas he bought his son mow 6 a lifetime hunting license and a Daisy Red rider. I have an m60 Marlin for him just like his father's. I haven't taken him out to shoot live yet, I'm waiting until his dad takes him first.

Highland what distance is Greene's range? I've been to quite a few in the area, mostly indoor pistol comp, but never there. I am a member of Square Deal Sportsmens club and have 300 meters to shoot at.
 
If I remember right the Greene Gun Club has one or two pistol ranges. A one hundred, a two hundred and a three hundred yard range.
My brother joined their earlier this year and went shooring there a couple of times, when I talk to him this morning I'll ask him again.

To bad New Yorkistan doesn't do handgun resipcation, i have been been lineing up handguns in the same caliber for the rifles I have.
I bought a 6" stainless Ruger GP100 in 357 magnum years ago and then picked up a stainless Ruger 77 rifle in 357 magnum. On one of my budweiser nights I was looking on gun broker and bid on a old style Ruger Redhawk 357 magum with a 7&1/2" barrel. So if I ever use that rifle I have an option of two revolvers.

I bought several T/C Contenders and a T/C Encore so I can get the regular rifle calibers in a handgun.
I have a old Remington 141 in 35 Remington and a 15" 35 Remington barrel for the Contender.
I have a Remington 700 in 223 with the bull barrel. I hit the Camden Rod & Gun Clubs June monthly dailey numbers raffle for $500 at Frank's Shooting Supply and bought a 15" 223 barrel, not sure if it a Contender or Encore barrel. It really doesn't matter. I should check it out.
The Encore I bought had eight barrels that came with it. I will be getting rid of six of them and replace them with what I need.
I want to pick up barrels in 243, 22-250, 22 Hornet, 222 Remington, 308 Winchester, 7mm mag maybe a couple of others.

I have three 44 magnum Ruger revolvers. A old style Redhawk 7&1/2" a super Redhawk 7&1/2" and a stainless 10" new style Blackhawk.

A bunch of other Ruger, Smith & Wesson revolvers a few Rossi revolvers. Three Glocks, three or four 38 spl derringers and a Bond Cowboy Defender in 45/410.
 
That's quite a collection highland I had a stainless gp100 6in 357. I liked the pistol but I liked the s&w 586 dcm 6 in 357 better, had both for a while. I once had a collection of 20 pistols 10 or so rifles and a couple shotguns. Injury, bills and long recovery depleted it to my black powder guns. I'm slowly building back up.
 
My dad had well over 100 the he got divorced. He's got about 5 now. He had over 500 long guns one time.

I still don't know where I'll be opening day. I maybe hunting at a friends house. Not known for big deer but there's some deer. Or maybe I'll try the state land, but I really have to do a quick scout first.
 
The place i will be sitting I just happened upon it last year. Trail cams will dictate where the better place to sit.


I have the GP100 and love it over all of my center fire handguns. I have a pristine blued 586 with a set of 4" and 6" barrels and the 686. I never shoot them.
I bought a nickle plated 6" 586 and hated it.
I sold that one and bought the 10" 44 mag Blackhawk. The grandson loves that one. Someday I will buy a 77/44 mag rifle to match up with the 44 mag revolvers.
I did buy a 4" older Rossi 720 revolver in 44spl to carry as well as twoolder Rossi 971 revolvers in 357mag with the muzzle compensator. Another favorite shooter.
I bought the S&W model 36 & 37.
A Ruger Security Six and Speed Six.
I havs around five revolvers in 327 Federal Magnum.

I love the 327 Federal Magnum round as a carry round.
My favorite revolver being my 3" S&W SP101.
I bought a Ruger Single-Seven from Bud's Guns a couple of years ago and it is still siting in the box untouched along with many others.

I'd love to be able to bring a nice handgun back there for deer hunting; but the Democrat, communist, libaturd party says NO.
 
I'll likely be at work opening morning, but have afternoon free, depending on work load in the shop. My boss used to close for opening day but hasn't lately. He is a "hunter" and always takes off. I say that because he is only out for the kill. The carcass isn't wasted though he gives it away. If by chance he does get something decent he belittles those who don't, or that shoot a doe. He seems to think that more does increases the available bucks. The logic is completely backwards.

Where are you going to be i usually get out at noon. I might be able to bow out though don't want to work ony birthday.
 
I've never used trail came, see so many get stolen. I can read the ground pretty good, it's the little Indian blood in me lol.
I missed one opening day. Worked in a truck shop, normally I could get off, but that day they were doing a big concrete pour so we all had to be in if there where any break downs.

Well pat I'm troy lol. I believe i am the youngest, I am 28. Hunted my hole life, dad had me shooting deer well before I was allowed to. I hunt for meat,but a nice rack would be a nice bonus.
 
Deer hunting for me has been a hit or miss on going gsme.
It all amounts to being in the right spot, at the right time and DON'T SCREW UP!.

The acreage I will be hunting on first day is kind of closed to outside people.

After the first day and the deer change their pattern can get together and hunt together..

Still
If you need a place to hunt on the first day after work i can get together with you and show you a couple of spots I use to go to.
It's all good.

Let's set date & time when we can all get together.
 
We should all pull together and make the best of this hunting season.
Walton isn't thst far from Harpursville so we should beable to hunt alot together.
The farther towards Afton the better the hunting gets.
