New York hunters

think we did a thread about camo a while back lol I showed off my Hawaiian shirt camo then.

I'd actually trade you for colder weather, some days anyway.... Lava fields at 100-110 degrees suck pretty bad too.
Lol some off those shirts blend in pretty good. I will admit there's nothing like a nice 30-40° day. But it can get cold. About 8 years ago after about 2 hours out, I walked to my jeep. After defrosting my door handle the temp display read - 28.

Since this thread will most likely be the three of us useing to lets get our names out there.
Troy started this thread, I'm Pat.

Other then that let's get things going.

This deer hunting has been and will be a life long passion for me.
LOVE IT.

Pat, Troy nice to meet you I'm Bertram, but have been called Bert most of my life it's easier for most yo remember.

The 15th the American Legion up in Hillcrest will be having chicken wings, can you guys make it there?
If the 15th doesn't work maybe the 22nd or the 29th.

When we get out hunting the Nineveh Country Store has good pizza slices for $1.50.

There is one small spot we should put a drive on. I seen a hell of a big buck there a couple of years ago. If he is still there it will be really nice now. It was a wall hanger when I seen it back then.

My brother will be hunting with us, he can't get around that good after his back surgery. He has a chevy suburban so we cal all fit it it. On a few of the bigger woods we can have him drop us off on the high side and we can space out and still hunt down to the lower road. We might push something to each other. The bigger deer will be way back in after the season opens up.

I have a backpack with an aluminum frame we can use to pack the quartes out with. I have a gamble and a set of pullies to lift the deer up out in the woods to skin it off and cut it up.

Any one like the heart & liver?

Can't make the 15th. But I hope to be up by the 22. I can't turn down a good slick of pie lol,

I am not to Mobil because my size but that have never stopped me, the slower movement slows me to see game better at least that's what I tell my self lol.

I like the heart but most deer I shoulder shoot and it's lost. I don't think I ever had deer liver, don't know why because I love beef liver.
I have a small pack I put a few things in, I have to repair it tho, the bottom is worn thin. I wanted to replace it this year but no money.

How do you guys normally deer hunt?.
I don't climb trees, close to home I'll bring a camping chair to sit in, and sorta make a quick wall from what is close. Most times I hunt old farms so I will sit on a field close to some woods.
Since am big camp is hard to find and pricey when I can, so I ware natural colors and flannel. I really don't think camo is needed, I walked right up to a doe looking at me 3 years ago bow hunting.

When hunting at where my brother lives I have a few places where i like to stand. I also have a few other places where I like to sit as well.

I like to just sit first thing in the morning and again an hour or so before dark even after the first few day.
Mid day I like to still hunt. On these bigger wood lots it would be nicevto have three or four people still hunt spaced out at a decent spacing away from each other and hunt in the same direction. The deer move sideways from you a lot and it pushes them in the others guys area of hunting.

Check out the Still Hunting Stratigies thread. The last post is a good read and it explains it perfectly
Unless there was a poat after I read it. I will ho back and see who wrote it and edit this post in a few minutes.

It was wriien by GSPN.

I like still hunting but after losing my normal farms most land I feel like I'd be walking up on other hunters.

I use to stand on a side of a power line cut on a hillside over in Damascus years ago. I got shots on the deer as they crossed the power line clearing. Hunters would cross there as well, i would see deer cross right before the hunters crossed and I would see deer cross right after the hunters crossed.

When some one spooks a deer they don't run far, they look back and avoid you. .
I have had deer right by me and some one would shoot close by. The deer would just raise up their head, cock their ears and go right back to what they were doing.

Last year I was sitting where my brother sits, I sat there for an hour & a half or so. When I went back yo his trailer there was deer tracks in the tracks that I made walking down to the stand.
They walked at a regular pace, they were not spooked from the scent I left behind.

I shot a doe one time that was licking the salt off my trucks read bumper.

When I was still in high school I was bow hunting, I was doing some still hunting and looking for sign where to sit down. I had a spike walk right up to me and rub it's head on me like a cat, I guess maybe people feed the deer and was used to people. I must of spent a hour with it, I have him a name and started to walk off. He was following me, ended my day, since he followed me to my truck next to the barn I have him some sweet feed from the barn. Never seen him after that day.

I'll send you one of my spare packs with the reloading stuff for that rifle.
Between my ALICE and 2200 I haven't used any of my softer packs in years.

ok thanks, it will get used. I always wanted a ATLICE pack, I remember they were pretty cheap I'd you spent time and got the different parts. I never used a pack with a frame. I just remember my dad said he didn't like it much, I think it was just the Sandy hell hole he was in not the pack. Did your stuff get there yet, well I guess it's still morning there. And again thank you.

You talked about deer camp stories, I'll give you one. A neighbor of mine in NYC had a small house in the Catskills, not far from Kingston. It was up on a mountain near the Hurley Mt. Inn, which I tried to stay away from. Very nice place, but some nights several of the guys over indulged to the point I was one of the few getting up early to hunt. About 8 or 10 of us would go up to the cabin every year.

The guy who owned the cabin told this story: He had shot a black bear in season, skinned it, and hung it from a tree on the property. Tagged, all legal. Next day he had a deputy show up. Was asked nicely if he would move the bear into the garage, seemed a neighbor had called insisting the sheriff come immediately, someone had been lynched. lol

It was a good area to hunt, took several deer there including my first, but when I moved further north into Westchester Co. I lost contact with him. Had another friend with land near Monroe NY which was loaded with deer. I could count on at least one deer every season.

After 67 years I left NY, still miss it.

I wish you guys good hunting!

Thanks for the story. I have the cops called a few times. So I just hang them inside. Can't believe some people. I remember when I was in school and it was deer season we would count on seeing deer hungup in trees in front of the houses, it was a way to show off. Even the bus driver we had would stop so we got a good look. Sad thing is that was not long ago I am only 28.

I use to eat at Vincent's Italian resturaunt in Afton . When he sold the business the food quality all went to hell and the new owner ran the business in to the ground. What a shame, that was one of the highlights of going back there.

There is another Italian resturaunt in Bainbrige I'd like to try
I think it's called Rosa's.

I too like still hunting, most of the deer I've taken have been on the move. I've been in two tree stands both in southern Virginia. Took a buck at 60 yds running through the woods, they run deer with dogs there, and he was evading the dogs. Have also spent time sitting in a hedge row overlooking corn fields. Generally I'll drag out and cut it up later never skinned in the woods.

there one my dad goes up that way he likes can't remember the name or where it is. The one in roscoe is ok. we don't eat out much. I like a good pizzeria or good deli, Chinese to lol.

Ya I just gut and drag, on some farms they let me use a tractor. There were some day were I said why did I shoot this deer lol. ny law is a little funny for me to quarter a deer.

you can have the Alice, there's only one hunt I used it for anymore, and it's very, very unlikely that one will ever happen again.
I honestly find them uncomfortable when empty, but as good or better than my 2200 when loaded. I can also carry more weight comfortably in an Alice than any other bag I've used yet.....course it is a full frame pack.
Mines an XL, and you can cram a 100+lbs of meat into it.
