32 H&R fans rejoice

I've been traveling with work for the past month but am ready to modify my Charter Arms Professional so that the point of aim is closer to the point of impact. It will void the warranty but having been through the Remington R51 fiasco, I doubt they will fix all of these handguns. Having access to industrial machine tools and previous experience it should not take long and will certainly improve the accuracy. Planning to mill down the top rib of the barrel to lower the front sight.

Has anybody got one of these that does NOT shoot low ?
I wouldn't be so quick to DIY this, I spoke to the customer service last week and they are aware of the issue with the sights and thus know how to fix it correctly. I was told the turnaround for these repairs is 1 week, maybe 2 weeks.

So it looks like 3 members got one and they all have issues. At least they are consistent
Early production issues. The good news is that they're aware of the issue now and are reworking the ones people have and since the issue is known the Professionals currently being produced shouldn't have the same shooting low issue.

so the public are their beta testers? no r/d in house?

My guess is that they had some decent r/d, then changed one little thing to speed production and there wasn't any MORE r/d after that little change.

Person 1: Hey, let's change this from being tapered to flat to make less time for our machinists!
Person 2: Good idea! It's not like it will change anything! It's just the rib on top of the barrel. It isn't attached to any moving parts so it won't hurt functionality.
Person 1: The only thing it's attached to at all is the front sight, and that's no big deal.
Customer 1: Hello, customer service, my gun shoots a bunch low!
Person 1: *bangs head against doorway* How did we forget to change the front sight height when we changed the rib?!

See? All sorts of little tiny things that can go wrong.
*above situation is hypothetical and subject only to the imagination of this author.

That would be a Ruger SP-101
Their 327s are either a 3" with iron sites or a 4" with adjustable sites.
I have the 3" & love it.

Yep, I already have the 4" SP101 chambered in 327 Fed Magnum. Also a Single 7. Nice handguns.

But it would be nice to have a 32 H&R, or even a 32 SWL chambered revolver gun with 4" barrel and adjustable sights. While more than acceptable practice, I prefer to not shoot shorter cases in chambers that are chambered for longer cartridges. Just one of my idiosyncrasies.:)

I think it's just people working there who are use to doing the same thing over and over again (Charter doesn't come out with new models with an entirely different design often) and are mindlessly working a repetitive job without any attention to detail. The operators making the shrouds didn't know they were big because the parts of the shroud being machined didn't involved the top rib, so they didn't check it as it wasn't their job to do.

The assemblers should have noticed the largeness of the shrouds and the barrel rib, but they're not high paid employees, they just do their job and don't ask questions as asking questions decreases their productivity.

Somebody, like an engineer, should have visually checked over the first few models before they left the building and they would have noticed the issue and taken corrective action.

Mistakes do happen, Charter is correcting them, and so long as they're aware there's an issue that's really as small as this, it will be fixed for future models.

Charter stands behind their products...
I hate this has happened with the Professional...

I have 5 Charter revolvers .. All are great guns ..

Charter Arms is not a large corporation so I think they are able to respond quickly and appropriately. No army of lawyers and accountants to derail decision making.

Does the barrel profile match the frame like it should now?
No, but the flat spot where the front sight is mounted to, the flat looks larger/deeper.

I also got a target that showed most of the hits were a lot closer to the center than they were when I shot it, but time will tell.

Received mine this week. It does shoot low at 5 to 7 yards .I found that putting the fiber optic front sight on to of the rear sight notch brought the POI up to acceptable with some bullseyes. I like this for it gives quick on target hits for defense if that is needed. I am using Hornady 80 grain Critcal Defense and reloads with Hornady 85 grain XTP and Little Gun powder.

Still waiting for a true factory repair that makes this gun shoot to point of aim. If not from Charter Arms I’m going to mill the barrel’s top rib.

I'm seeing them readily for sale now. Tempted but I don't want the hassle of sending it back. Does anyone know if those on the shelves today are shooting correctly?

Worse, since I live in md I have to buy it and then let the state screw with it for a month or so before I can have it as its not currently approved by the brain trust here. Their crack team of "experts" have to look at it to make sure I won't shoot my eye out with it. Then, fill out paperwork and wait another 8 days on tops of the months or weeks I have already waited. If it turns out I THEN have to send it back to Charter it really is a tough pill for me.

I still haven’t had a chance to go test mine yet. I’ll report back once I do.

So the "fix" is for the shroud to be more even with the frame? Is that correct? Most pics I see of them for sale online show the shroud (guessing here) about 1/4 or 1/8th above the frame.

Wonder if there will be a known serial # when they will be right.

That would be the best fix for those currently being made in the factory right now, but for those who are sending them back to get the sight POA adjusted, the fix they're doing is removing the front sight and milling the flat deeper.

I still haven't tested mine yet, need to get some reloads made.

I am not affiliated with this auction in any way shape or form.

It is described as a Charter Arms Undercover in 32 S&W, but I am pretty sure that the Undercover wasn't made in 32 S&W "short", just in the long cartridge. The cylinder also looks more like a long to me.

Anyway, other posters mentioned that they wished they had a chance at one of these for a reasonable price. I already have a couple that are pretty much equivalent, or I might bid on it.
