Side arm carry while hunting. Where legal.

no matter how much I agree with your mindset, I would advise not publicly expressing it.

Kinda where I was at with the "“Coup De Grace” thingy. I personally don't have an issue with it, but I know that many states and the wardens that work for them do. This is a question that comes up most every Hunter Safety class I help teach when we have "ask the warden" night. Same thing goes, at least here, for having a firearm/weapon on your person(other than a licensed CWC, and even then you cannot use it on the animal) for finishing an animal outside of legal hunting hours. Not only are you hunting outside of legal hours, most of that time you are probably using the aid of a light.......two violations, unless it is a furbearer.

As beeenbag says, don't post your violations or any intent to violate here. This is The High Road and poaching/violating is not the high road. If you do have to do, what you think is right, and it is a violation, keep it to yourself. No body is gonna be impressed.

I do carry a revolver while deer hunting.
This year for the first time, I plan on venturing out with only a handgun at my disposal.
I won't do it every time, but I will do it.

I am not trying to impress anyone and especially not you! As far as taking The High Road, maybe you should take THR and leave your smart ass comments you feel you need to share with every thread to yourself. Thanks!

Ohio law says you can kill a coyote with whatever you wish, but if your deer hunting with a bow and shoot the coyote with the CCW gun its illegal. Hows that make sense? I have asked a warden if I walk upon a coyote that's say eating my deer I just shot can I shoot it with my pistol and I was told no, but I can hunt the coyote with a pistol as long as its not concealed. I understand they don't want some jackass sitting in his stand taking pot shots at deer with a Glock and say he had to euthanize it, but I don't think its right your not allowed to defend yourself against an animal attack. We leave a deer overnight its tore up by 7am. I sat with my dead deer, broken hand 300yards from a coyote den for 45min while someone came to pick me up. Had one of them came to try and eat my deer or worse, attack me I would have been screwed. Shot a buck that dropped in a bean field decide to come back to life when his antlers were touched and he had a stare down with my buddy. If he attacked one of us we would be in violation of the law for defending ourselves. Beeenbag is correct, I am in a not so great of mood and that law really irritates me, so I ran my mouth. Ohio never allowed CCW while hunting even if your a license holder. We also have open carry which wasnt allowed unless it was a deer hunting revolver. I detest ODOW for some of their stupid laws that make it hell on us so I vented.

If one is not trying to impress folks, why then the posting of poaching? In order to prove you know more than the ODOW? Sorry if my so called "smart ass' comments offended you because I hate poachers and don't think there is a place here on the High Road for their bragging about it. If you are so easily offended about snide comments about poaching, where does that place you on the scale of high to low road? Sorry, poaching is poaching and violating is violating. Ain't much in-between as far as the law looks at it. Don't like it, whine about it some more, but don't try and validate poaching because you detest ODOW. Ain't impressing anyone.

I agree @Highland Lofts and I will be taking the High Road and ignoring the internet game warden above and get back to the thread itself.

OP I apologize for derailing it..

I hate when this type of crap takes over a thread.

Me too. I apologize for drifting off topic. I have this issue with poaching/violating and folks thinking SSS is just fine, especially when they think it is also fine to post on social media about it. Of all the times I have gotten into trouble here on the High Road, it's because I have very strong convictions against poaching and do not hesitate to make those convictions known. I wonder tho, why any responsible law abiding hunter would have an issue with those convictions?

Mods, feel free to remove anything I have posted that is not High Road worthy. Thank you. Buck.

Colorado law is pretty simple- If the handgun is going to be discharged at a game animal in a hunting situation, it must meet the requirements for hunting, even for a "coup de grace". During modern rifle season, these requirements include a four-inch minimum barrel, fire an expanding bullet of .24 caliber (6 mm) or larger and use a load that produces a minimum 550 ft. pounds of energy at 50 yards. A handgun authorized under this statute may not be used during the archery or muzzleloader season for any aspect of hunting. You can carry whatever you want for non-hunting use while hunting.

now I’m curious as to what handgun out there uses a .24 cal round with 550ft pounds of energy at 50 yards with a barrel shorter than 4 inches.

The most meaningful restriction is the 550 ft-lb @ 50 yards- Cuts out almost all "duty" calibers. Factory .41 and .44 Mag are usually the starting point.

right, and I’m assuming they are considering the Thompson’s when considering a 6mm bullet, but I can’t think of any reason other than “someone tried it” for the barrel length restriction in addition to the caliber and ft pounds requirement.

could you imagine a single shot handgun with a 3” barrel chambered in 6.5 creedmoor or similar?

holy muzzle blast. The fireball alone would be a potential hazard to nearby dry forestry.

Coyotes, meth and heroin addicts are bad around these parts as well as trespassers so I always carry a sidearm when hunting.
When I lived in NC, my next door neighbor was a game warden. To your meth manufacturers, add pot farmers. From what he said, state forests and game lands aren't as safe as they used to be.
He also mentioned if you see a garbage bag be careful as needle users will throw a bag filled with used hypodermic needles away.

My elk spot here in Western Colorado is full of bears. During archery season I carry my “bear gun”, a J-frame .357 in my front pocket. It’s so comfortable I hardly notice it.

Had one charge two falls ago and nearly shot at about ten yards. Fortunately yelling worked, but that snub nose did feel slightly inadequate.

No sidearm for me when rifle hunting.
