New York hunters

I don't even know if I can get out to check zero, the one place I hunt some and shoot the guy is kinda weird. I guess he found a deer with arrow in it and don't want anyone there now.

I had a similar problem when I first got back into hunting. I couldn't find 243 ammo, finally did find 2 boxes of rem premiums, I bought 1 at 50.00 went out to a piece of state land and zeroed at 25 with 4 rounds. I changed locations and took 2 does that season, one the same morning.

When you come up we'll find a place for you to check your zero better.

Up there I can shoot 50 yards at my step grandparents place.
I always wondered about shooting on state land, at what point is it hunting or sighting in a gun. We have a nice 100 yard indoor range down here but it's like $22 a hour.

Ya I need to check in with her, plus I should ask about some bee's wax, I think the got 200lbs of honey this year.

That's a lot of honey. I used to use honey and brown sugar to glaze ham steaks.

You are target shooting as long as you're not actively pursuing or harassing game. Granted gunfire can force game animals to move but they will move to a safer location until you are done.

Ya I guess it does not say anything that you can't target shoot. I just get paranoid being raise here you can't even shoot down here without cops getting called.

It sucks when cancer strikes, but they have came a long way in cures for it.
Early detection is the key to a better cure.
.
My brother is a member of the Greene Gun Club and they have a 50, 100 and 300 yard range we can go.to. there is a bunch of state land between Smithville Flats and Coventry we can hunt.
The gun club is right on the way over there if you have the time and want to go in that direction.

People today are so anti-gun or have no clue about firearms. They think all firearms are bad.
It's not the guns, it is the jackasses who does bad things with them.

Re: sighting in. Where I used to hunt near Hurley NY in Ulster Co., there was a great little box canyon, maybe 50' wide and 75 yards deep with high walls. It was all shale, soft rock, so ricochets weren't really a problem. Perfect place to sight in, right off a small road, many used it for decades.

Well, slobs arrived and pretty much left hundreds of pounds of junk there, some target material, some just refuse they didn't want to pay to dispose of. You know what came next. Private owner fenced it off and put up many no trespass signs. End of an era.

Ok nice.I was suspended one year in school for a American rifleman magazine. You can't blame some people because that's all they were raised.

When I was in high school i use to take my 22lr Mossberg 342 to school, put it in my locker then go squirrel hunting right after school. Things have really went down hill a lot since then.

Next thursday or friday i will be picking up the stuff to make venison jerky and sausage.
My brother bought the equipment to make sausage.
Mayhoods had sausage casing, we will see what they have.

Anyone make any deer summer sausage, I never tried. We used to make a lot of ground jerky with the extruder and the dehydrator. I need to pick up a smoker for here, My dad has a nice one that can do wood, charcoal and it has gas burners. Smoking salmon would be nice to.

You guys like or ever eaten stripped bass. I think I am going down to do a day off salt water fishing with my friend.

Not strippers, large and small mouth, seabass, salmon and various trout species. Would like to try some.

When I was in my teens my family visited cousins in Wildwood NJ. His cousin Sam, we called him Uncle, had a 40 ft diving boat. Down an entire day on the Atlantic fishing while he was diving a wrek.

Think we are going to seaside or point pleasant. If I get one I'll bring some up, it's a nice meaty white meat. A mate from a boat I fished a lot have use a savici recipe it was so good. I lost it tho. But just some lemon pepper butter and that's a meal.

Never tried stripper bass, but I have indulged in a few real strippers.

When I lived back there I use to go to Southwest Florida a lot durring the winter and fished for groupers, snook, redfish and sheephead.
All good eating fish.

The salmon fishing out here is really decent. I use to fish for them all of the time. Kind of lost interest, now my grandson is almost big enough to go I think I will get out again.

Troy, if you get to the Sound there's still some False Albacore around. I was chasing them last weekend before putting the boat up for the year.

Thanks we are going the Jersey coast so there's still a chance there to. Don't know if we are going to the beach or the inlet. I'd rather sit on a park bench then the 300 yard walk on sand this time of year lol. Guys were getting some mahi mahi this year again and some nice ling cod out of sheeps head bay. But could not make it out there.

I'm sure there are restrictions right next to Binghamton.

I just checked the refs the rifle restriction is in city of binghamton and the area just surrounding it. There is a
only one piece of land with public access in the area that I know of. It's a mandmade pond, county property, on Old State rd. It's actually the town of Dickinson. It is stream fed and made to control the creeks flow

When I get back there I will check out so.e of my old hunting grounds and see if we can get acess to them again.
I was friends with Frank George he had the big truck garage on upper Court Street in Kirkwoid and owned a bunch of property across the highway and lived over there on another parcel. Since he died I'm sure all that property is off limits.
Since I have been coming back to deer hunt I mainly focused on the Harpursville, Afton, Coventry and then over around South Otselic.

It would be nice to get a group together and put some deer drives on again like in the good old days. I stil get deer but it is better with a group to share the hunts with.

I would love to hunt where I grew up hunting, after the farmer die his a land was given to his cousins who promptly sold it. There nothing like hunting a place where you know very spot.

My dad maybe able to join us if his hip stays ok.

Ok cool you guys talked. Ya we haven't gone to much the last ten years or so. Between his first hip the broken neck shoulder and his other hip now bothering him. Not having land adds to it, he never hunted state land, the horror story's you here from the old guys when the city hunters came up.

Ill check if I have you my house number here, if so call anytime. Pass that on to Brent to.
