Looking into purchasing a 45 acp. I have seen the Springfield XD mod 2 45 acp and found it appealing. I'm looking for carry and home defense. Needs to be able to fit large and small hands in case the wife needs it. Anyone know anything about this gun or have any other recommendations for other 45 acp. Preferably not more than $650.

Excellent gun. I purchased my XD45mod2 about 2 months ago and have put ~200 rounds through it. Not one jam. It comes with 2 13 round magazines. trigger is a little long, but has a positive feel and clean break. Reset is good as well. Like the front fiber optic sight. Easy to adjust the rear sight. I purchased a used LEO S&W 45 with a 10 round magazine. It was a 1.0, which means the trigger was horrendous. I did change it out with an APEX. Now it's awesome. I love how it shoots and I'm pretty accurate with it. I heard the MP45 mod 2 takes care of the trigger issues, so that may be an option. But you cannot go wrong with the XD45mod2. It feels solid, shoots well, and is super reliable. Haven't had to deal with either company for product support, but have heard excellent comments from S&W. You may want to research product support to help you decide.

My first version of the XD has been reliable and fits my big old mitts and my wife's much smaller hands. But the S&W M&P has been more comfortable for her and okay for me. She finds recoil of the 45 acp too hard but does fine with the 9mm. Try too have both you and your wife handle which ever guns you're considering. It made a big difference for us.

I've run alot of rounds through various XD45. They are good guns overall.

Some hate features such as the grip safety. I'm indifferent.

In the same class of striker pistol in .45, I'd recommend also looking at the M&P 45 2.0 from Smith and Wesson.

Adjustable backstraps, reliable, affordable, and decent trigger.

A friend has had the XD Mod2, 45cal for a couple years and I have shot it many times. The trigger is pretty good, sights are ergonomics are great. The grip is unbelievable slim for a double stack 45. There have been no malfunctions

Pending your purchase time frame there is multiple months of the year they will offer a gear up promotion

Current one just ended so it may be a few more months but they have something going very often.

Just an fyi.

Also as someone who has carried a xds 4.0 9mm since around 2008 I'd give them an A+rating.
My personal choice due to ballistics, capacity, recoil and ease of follow up shots nods to the 9mm but that is simply personal preference.

Not sure Id recommend any polymer .45 for a lady of small stature just based on the recoil, but if she can handle it, sure, nothing wrong with an XD.

My daughter is 5'4", 125lbs and she has a very hard time with her fiance's XD.45, but carries and shoots her 9mm Walther PPS just fine.

Grip safety is a plus if wife rearranges things or dusts around the gun, or you have a pet. However, it is not child-proof, so keep that in mind. Like any handgun, XD requires training. My wife has a 4.5" and TLR-1HL, and it is relatively easy to shoot.

Mid size XD or XDM will serve both of you well. Durable, accurate, relatively inexpensive. I have several Springfields, of which the 45 is my beside gun with mounted weapon light. When loaded with 13 rounds, the gun balances well and the added weight helps with recoil. Pleasant gun to shoot, and I happen to like the grip safety feature. You cannot go wrong with the Springfield.

My FiL has about a dozen service pistols. The Springfield is his least favorite. He doesn't care for the ergonomics. Maybe at least hold one before you purchase?

I've shot it a few times and don't remember much one way or the other.

I used to shoot Glocks....3 of them. I switched all of them out because I shot the Springfields better (PREFER the ergonomics). Not bashing Glocks; I just prefer Springfield. As always....YMMV.

Have Two(2) .45 ACP's for EDC and HD.

- GLOCK slimline G36 (6+1)

- SA 1911-A1 MilSpec (7)

Very happy with both, and are b/t $5-600.

I know , not the model you asked about but i highly recommend the glock 30. It handles as well as the full size, carries easy (although a bit wide, which is unavoidable for a double stack 45 acp) and is more accurate than its stats on paper would suggest. I've had mine since 2012, a lot of guns have come and gone since then but i would never part with that one.
My experience with the springfield XD series was not positive but i try my best not to speak badly of guns that work great for countless people out there. I would suggest shooting some different guns and see what feels right.

S&W came out with a M&P 2.0 subcompact 45. Calling it a subcompact is misleading, as it’s a mid size gun. It comes with 4 backstraps which are easily changed, so it should fit both you and your wife well. I picked one up recently and it’s been great. It’s accurate, has had no malfunctions with hundreds of rounds through it and does a good job of taming recoil. I’d recommend looking at it before you make a decision.

My personal favorite in .45 acp is a 1911. The one I carried for several years also happens to have been built by Springfield Armory. I did get a few things swapped out, though.

HK 45 with a LEM trigger.
It's worthy suggestion, I saw Var.7 guns on Gunbrocker under $700. Not sure how real it was, but yeah... The only problem is LEM itself. It really is still a DA/SA. The magic sauce is that it decocks automatically if you release it completely. So yeah, you don't have to deal with safety and decocker levers, but the pull is that of DA/SA. So, XD is still easier on a beginner.

The XD's are excellent pistols. Since "carry", and the possibility of your wife using it (I am assuming your wife has typical female hands, which are smaller than typical male hands) are in the list of tasks you want this pistol to address, and you specified 45 ACP, have you considered the XDS or S&W shield 45? Both are skinnier than most other pistols of that type, which aids in concealed carry, as well as possibly being more "female friendly". I know the mod 2 will hold a couple of more rounds than the XDS, but the penalty for that is a thicker frame and added weight from the additional heavy 45 ACP rounds.

I have several XDs and prefer them to Glocks. To each their own. SA are very reliable. Even if perhaps you need service their CS is great!

We have both and wife can't deal with the recoil in Shield 45. She shoots the 4.5" XD with no issue. Maybe the width of the grip helps. Shield is very narrow. The XD-S is worse, if anything. It's just as narrow, but also "deep" front-to-back. It's not natural to hold.

The XD45 vs G30 is total personal preference. Springfield was able to keep theirs as slim as their 9mm’s which is why I give it a slight nod. The G30 is not as tall though which is also nice. I have a G29 and it carries well, but sometimes in just a shirt I want something slimmer and switch to my XD. If Glocks were able to have 45 same width as 9 it would be the shizzle.

Big fan of XD pistols especially over Glocks. Politics aside, they're very reliable pistols, the design has been around for some time, they feel great in hand, and the price is right. I've had two XD's and a long time buddy of mine has had the 45 acp XDs for years, with zero issues.

I believe the OP has already made a decision but I will offer anyways, My wife personally owns 2 Springfield XD Mod 2's Both are 4.0 models, one, the very first gun she ever bought, is a XD Mod 2 9mm. She then wanted another gun un another caliber and we both decided that as she already had the 9mm then why not just pick up an XD Mod2 in 45acp... Same gun different chambering. it was a wise choice and she has no trouble switching back and forth between the two guns.

Personally I like hammer fired guns with metal frames.
